Doubly Fed Induction Generators (Part 2 of 2)

In this lesson we'll compare and contrast traditional synchronous generators with induction generators and discuss how doubly fed induction generators are an ideal 3rd option which can both operate at variable rotational speeds and manage reactive power requirements. We'll learn in hyposynchronous operation the rotor electromagnet can be turned in the same direction as the underspeed rotor to make up the difference and in hyperynchronous operation the rotor electromagnet can be turned in the opposite direction of the overspeed rotor to slow it down. Additionally, we'll examine plots of doubly fed induction generator electrical and mechanical properties at different rotational speeds and explore the use of bidirectional AC to AC converters that extract power from the rotor. Lastly we'll compare and contrast synchronous generators making use full converters with doubly fed induction generators making use of comparatively less expensive partial converters. (Part 2 of 2)

More fantastic explanation of a complex subject! Where do I sign up for the DFIG PFM lab project? lol
