I understand the safety aspect for burning oil rather than coal, but as far as the pollution factor, I read an account some years ago from an old railroader who grew up next to the main line somewhere in the Plains area of the country. He said his mother would hang the sheets out on the line on wash day and the steam locomotives that passed by never soiled them until the Railroad switched to burning oil. The oil smoke virtually ruined the washing because it would cling to the clothes whereas the coal smoke did not. Such is progress I guess... The beginning of this video is awesome! The view of Durango at a distance with the steam/smoke plume from the locomotive accompanied with the haunting echo of the whistle makes me wonder how it must have been for the residents of such remote towns as Durango and Silverton in the 1880's when the train arrived in town. In the winter particularly, that would have been one of the few connections to the outside world. It also reminded me of my first ride on the D&S in the late 1980's. The memory of the locomotive whistle as it came out of the canyon into Silverton echoing off the canyon walls still gives me shivers.

Awesome shots I look forward to seeing both coal and oil fired steam locomotives working together in 2021 And I especially look forward to return of the newly converted 473 This will be the first time 473 had a clean smokestack it will be kinda nice to see it without a cinder trap

I sure enjoy these steam loco videos, but I'm surprised it takes two engines to pull only 15 cars.
