Dive into the world of acoustics with Dennis Foley as he sheds light on the "Double Wall Half Truth" in this informative video. Dennis addresses the common misconception surrounding the double wall construction method for noise reduction, explaining why it may not be as effective as many believe, especially for low frequencies. Through a step-by-step analysis, he clarifies that while this method can reduce noise transmission for vocals, it falls short for bass and other low-frequency sounds due to its lack of mass and vibrational control. Dennis introduces a more efficient alternative, the "sandwich technique," which offers superior performance in a smaller space by targeting the specific frequency and amplitude of the noise problem. This video is a must-watch for anyone looking to understand the complexities of soundproofing and seeking effective solutions for their acoustic challenges.

Thank you. Vibrational acoustical issues are different in form and treatment applications. To understand this relationship, think of a snake and a worm. The outside, airborn energy is the snake. It is the 28' long, 40 hz., garabge truck exhaust in the alley behind your bedroom frequency. It is big like a snake. When the snake strikes your bedroom wall (barrier), it must come out the other side looking like a worm. It is reduced in (strength) amplitude. However, frequency response is the same. It is the requirement of the barrier to reduce vibrational signatures using the proper construction methodologies, so we have worm sound entering our room. No "soundproofing". Vibration management.

I got sold on the double wall system but have just now completed the exterior wall only. I'm glad I was introduced to your channel a few days ago. The room I am building is primarily for drums and I really want to stop all sound from escaping. I know that may be impossible but I want to do the best I can. Do you have any suggestions on what I should research from this point? Currently I have the exterior wall built on a concrete slap (under my stilt house) with 2x4 studs and two layers of 19/32 OSB attached to outside. And the wall is insulated with regular pink stuff. I'm stopping here until I learn more about your sandwich technique.

None of the tactics you are considering will be viable for a drum room. Fill out the information in this link: www.acousticfields.com/free-room-analysis/

Are you describing a form / application of constrained layer damping? Thanks!

Barrier technology is always constrained layers.

We get calls every day from people who have used this barrier technique and are unhappy with the low frequency transmission. It's a technique but a poor one for middle and high frequencies. It takes 9" of space to use this technique. We can attenuate middle and high frequencies in 4" of space requirement.

Looks like you would have to be rich to have walls like that. That's an enormous mass for 4 walls and a ceiling at extravagant cost yes?! That's very disheartening for the every day guy like me. I have been working on finishing my basement as a listening room but have delayed it for 3 years until I find a solution to keeping all that sound bound to that room so my wife is not tearing me a new one every time I do. 😧 She doesn't hear good sound, she just hears loud.....

You must build the barrier that wors full range startinbg at 30 hz. Is your design good down to 30 hz. Low frequency noise transmiion requires mass.

I understand that now. I got thinking. Maybe I don't need to do the walls just the ceiling and one short wall. 3 walls are concrete block with framing for drywall. Is the concrete block ok?

@@Silver_Surfer_1 If you are discussing noise transmission from the room source to outside the room, you must do all six surface areas.
