Double Thump

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Spa Valley Railway's Double Thump Event.
This was the first time 2 DEMU's have worked together in preservation .
After an appeal for help with transportation Class 205, 1133 was brought over from the Lavender Line where it ran with the lines Class 207, 1317.
The event marked the 30th anniversary of the closure of the line where 1317 was the last train to carry passengers over the line, it carried the same headboards during the event as it did on that fateful day 30 years earlier

My introduction to BR DMU's was on a visit in 1984. I was startled by the thick black smoke each unit shot out when they started. They also puffed like a steam engine. I saw them in York and Oxford, so that's Eastern and Western regions. These preserved machines are apparently better maintained than was standard on the BR of the 80s.

Nice sound, used to ride these out of Fratton station in the 80s, nicer for passengers than the revvy under floor engines that replaced them. I think the drivers are a bit too gentle here, back in the day they gave them more welly!

A great day out. I saw the Hasting Diesels tour on its way out in the morning at Petts Wood. Then had a good day on the Double Thump. Even got a tour of the centre car for 1317

These look proper trains. Comfortable, smooth, warm and some look compartmentalised. When Southern Region finished with them , BR should have taken some onto the Tyne Valley -Carlisle-Stranraer line. They would have been wonderful. Instead BR gave bus conversions similar to the Arkansas Chugabug

If you like Thumpers you could take a look at 80 Class & 450 Class (here on KZread) which operated in Northern Ireland, they were fitted with the same traction equipment. In some videos of 80 Class in particular the traction motors are quite vocal (situated driving the bogie at the other end of the power car from the EE Diesel engine).

I hope the uploader allows this recommendation for traction motor sound ..... `NIR (Northern Ireland Railways) 80 Class and 450 Class - Irish Thumpers 2009' 3.05

Those southern region diesel unit were real thumpers must admit they looked better in Southern green than Network livery. Beautiful bit of preservation.

I have it on good authority from a traction man that the modern DMU set up is the worst being noisy for the passengers, bad on track and damaging for the tiny engine exposed to all the elements. A larger low revving inboard engine being the preferred option and they last longer between servicing eg HST's!!!

steamsearcher Quite right. If only they'd pushed abit more with the class 210 DEMU, we might've been spared all that noise and vibration in EVERY car as in today's DMU. If it hadn't been for our simple, old and reliable Southern DEMUs, the HST wouldn't have been, so I was told when I worked on the DEMUs. Magnificent machines, those older DEMUs, including the UTA/NIR types.

What a guy at 3:10! I'm missing a hip, but to walk without a knee takes some doing. On a different note. I'm somewhat higorant about rolling stock. In 1982 I rode in a 2 coach unit from Blackwater to Gatwick. It had a manual gearbox, and took ages between gears. My memory isn't great, and I was sitting with a particularly special person. I have a vague recollection of being able to see forward to the track ahead. I wondered at the time if the thing would ever get enough speed to get us to the airport in time. Ended up being one of my best rail experiences. What sort of machine was it? I know that someone's going to enlighten me. Thanks a bunch in anticipation! Nige.
