Double the Hay with None of the Fertilizer Using Native Warm Season Grasses!

We harvested 5600 pounds per acre of hay in moderate drought from one of our Native Warm Season Grass production fields this July, all without the use of added fertilizer.
Join Colt Hamilton in the hayfield while we look at the prolific growth of Big Bluestem hay.

Thanks for the video! I think diverse natives is the way to go for cattle and sheep. I cast to try them out.

I love your videos. Please don't stop. I learn so much and you're helping me learn how to better my small field. I've always loved the prairie and native grasses.

I want to know more about haying native prairie for stock. I know some species such as lupine can be toxic. Do only Hay when its dominated by warm seasons or do you hay in more diverse pastures. Asking in regards to horses, the can be picky

You can hay diverse prairies... it's known to be some of the best grass out there among cattle producers. We've not run into any issues, but we'd love to hear your experience if you end up going that direction with horses!

Would love to know how to grow big bluestem. How to plant, how to maintain it etc. would love to hear you speak on it. My extension agent is used to Bahia and Bermuda and told me it was difficult to establish natives and even more difficult to keep it maintained as its sooo easy to kill with livestock overgrazing.

Have you noticed native wildlife such as turkey and quail use this field as habitat since planting it in big bluestem?

Yes, there is a resident covey of quail. They seem to like the switchgrass best though. There's always plenty of turkey strutting out there in spring, especially on the years we burn.

Did you spray before planting Big Bluestem? How long did it take from seeding the field until you were ready to harvest? Does this grass build top soil? Have you done a soil test since big bluestem has become established?
