Actually, to my understanding, Sonic3 doesn't have a battery in it. It instead saves with a very early version of flash memory. As for the extra save files, I'm not sure if that's because the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge has save memory of its own, or if the two extra files are deliberately locked away on the Sonic3 cart unless it's locked onto Sonic & Knuckles (considering Sonic3 was pretty much made with future connectivity in mind, S&K being split off from Sonic3 during development in order to meet a deadline, this would make sense).

Fun fact: Sonic 3 & Knuckles were originally going to be all in one game. But due to time constraints, Sega was forced to make them into separate games.

That's actually a good question.

Legends say, if you combine 10 S&K's, you unlock Wechnia.

Explanation: A top S&K on a bottom S&K causes the bottom to simply "pass through" the game, like a lot of incompatible titles that don't generate a No Way!. Great find! S&K also has no internal save data; that data is held on the Sonic 3 cart, separate from S3, explaining why your saves came up normal.

The lock on cartridges were actually a really cool idea. Shame it didn't catch on. Could have been used for a variety of cool things that otherwise weren't possible during that era, like your save data for one game impacting what you could do in that game's sequel.

Sega would have raked in cash if each level stacked on top of each other unlocked a new, more powerful character.

I remember doing this same experiment in 1995. What's strange is 24 years later, I remembered the outcome.

Takes me back. I bought my sonic 3 used from the VHS store and it was from the US and needed a golden cart (called a honeybee i think) to run on my UK megadrive. You plugged the honeybee in first and sonic 3 on top. And then with sonic and knuckes i wasn't sure it wouldnt work, but it did. The similar three cart tower was my daily experience lol.

@@Beansman-gp3ws Chill out dude. It was only scrapped because the game had to be rushed out. On another note they didn't have to add Sonic 2 compatibility. That is new content, by the way, since it couldn't have happened if Sonic 3 got released in one cart. Your claim that nothing in Sonic & Knuckles is new is invalid.

You're running the cart at the bottom regardless of how high you stack them. The way it works is that S&K maps the address space of the cart plugged into it after the S&K ROM mapping, and decides what to do. The game code is stored on the S&K cartridge, using static assets (levels, sprites, etc) from Sonic 1 or Sonic 3. Sonic 2 works a little differently - the S&K cart maps Sonic 2 into memory as with the other games, but then it patches the Sonic 2 region with a separate ROM on the S&K cartridge and jumps execution into the patched version of Sonic 2. It decides what to do by identifying the cart plugged into it - if it's anything other than Sonic 1, 2, or 3, then all it does is use the cart data to generate random 'blue spheres' stages.

If you put in sonic 1, you still get the no way blue spheres stages, but you can pick the stage manually, and if you put in sonic 3d blast, due to it also using tricks to get more memory than normally allowed, sonic and knuckles looks for the header halfway through the cartridge, fails to recognize anything, and then boots up sonic and knuckles alone.
