Double knitting - how to knit 2 layers at the same time by ARNE & CARLOS

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a great, but slightly difficult technique, where you knit 2 layers at the same time. Perfect to make scarves, coasters or anything where you don't want the back strands showing.

    Thanks so much! I saw a pattern for a scarf in April this year and decided to knit it when I hadn’t knitted for decades! Only when the pattern book arrived it was double knitting which I was not prepared for. Now thanks to this video I’ve been able to start on my Moomin scarf. Excellent 👍 and I’m going to crochet the floral rug too!

    Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your amazing work. I knit in the portuguese style of knitting but I am going to try Arne's way. If I could, I would like to suggest that when you are demonstrating how to knit your projects that you use thicker needles and yarn because it is really hard for us to see what you are doing especially when you are using several colors at the same time. Thank you so much and I look forward to learn more and watch more new videos from you. Happy New Year. Carla

    I'm a thrower lol nice to see someone demonstrate the way I do it. My grandmother taught me to knit and that is just the method that works for me when I double knit. And it helps me not get confused if I add a third color.

  • @LindaRSchmidt
    @LindaRSchmidt4 жыл бұрын

    These techniques were painful to watch. I start with the two yarns tied together and use a figure 8 style cast on. Then I use both the throwing and picking technique at the same time. The top view color in my dominate hand throwing and the backside color in less dominate picking. The two create a balanced tension that is not too tight, just need to remember to pass both yarns back and forth between knit and purl. But I like listening to your calming voices and sweet interactions. Thank you.

    Thank you so much for demonstrating this technique! I am an English cottage knitter so Carlos' way is how I'm going to try this and I suspect it'll be a little easier because I hold my right needle like a pencil and can manipulate the yarn to slightly more effect. At least I hope so but the beautiful results are so worth the time and effort.

    HI Guys, thanks for the video.I love that you show the technique in two styles of knitting. I think a combination of throw or pick and Russian/Greek/Portugese style would be good, holding each yarn separately, I would also be great if, after showing us samples, you had a plain background, as the definition of what you are knitting as you do it is hard to see clearly..

    Hi guys, great video. I just finished a my first double knit project. I tried both ways of knitting, picking and throwing, and then ended up doing both. Keeping one colour in one hand and the other in the other hand and it seemed to work well. (I didn't end up with a big knot of yarn.) I just now wonder if there are any tips you would have for knitting with both hands.

    I was just refreshing my memory on double knitting for a project I'm starting and of course my first attempt I ended up not closing the beginning of the project and having two knitted pieces, which got me thinking, would double knitting be a good process for knitting the front halfs of a cardigan or sweater or open vest or maybe sleeves knit flat? Sort of a two-at-a-time? Wouldn't this in theory create the mirror image? Perhaps some time I'll try it just to see what happens, until then, I figured you both are highly skilled with knitting and if anyone tried it it would be you guys. Just curious. Thanks for all the tips and tutorials!

    I find that if I cast on both yarns at same time instead of alternating like you do I don't get the separation of the fabrics and if I twist the two yarns so the purl color twists around the knit color I can knit and purl the first two stitches and not get the split there either.

    I love you guys I do not crochet well but I made a baby blanket in pink and blue . You begin by doing a single crochet like three Rows long enough to double up the work up, then you work the color away from you . And you have one side pink and the other side blue. So you don't have worry about who you are knitting for boy or girl. I know the knitting is harder to do. I have made many baby blankets I learned to make the blanket when I was eleven. And now I am 75. I learned to knit when I was 6 years old. And I wore it to first grade. My teacher didn't believe that I knit it myself. My mom Said yes she made it. Unfortunately my mom passed away when I was 9. I love you guys one more way when I went to college I majored in voice in sacred music and we had to study all liturgies so we could go into any church and conduct the service music and liturgy. I really love you guys . The Lativian people wore there costumes until they were married. The costumes were made by the wearer. They start when they were 5 to 6 years old. I really love you two.

What if....... you don't want to have a pattern, but you want the 2 sides attached to each other all the time. (If both sides are the same color, or different colors) ?

    Thank you for showing this technique. I’m forever leaning and am thankful I found your channel. I originally leaned from my grandma how to knit and purl (throwing) but later learned how to knit and purl the Norwegian way. Carlos I wanted to ask about your purl as you throw clockwise around the needle and I was taught counterclockwise. Can you explain how throwing one way vs the other affects the stitches?

    It must be that as long as you're consistent, I guess it doesn't matter which direction you wrap the yarn for a purl stitch. A woman in my knitting group who had been knitting for many years suddenly learned one night that she had been wrapping her purl stitches in the "wrong" direction. The person sitting across from her is the one who noticed the discrepancy. We all looked closely at her work and could see that it had a slightly different texture.

    I think it might twist the stitch but I am not sure. But I agree the best thing is to stay consistent.

    I don’t knit like Arne or Carlos. I think what I do is called continental knitting, although I’m not sure because I taught myself from books. I move the yarn in front of the needle for purling and behind the needle knit stitches.

    I want to learn how to do a double knitted hat in the round. How do I know how many stitches to cast on?

  • @SuperDesignChick

    belenina41 if you are making your own pattern and cast on 100 stitches normally, you now need 200 stitches. You cast on alternating each colour. I am making my first double knit project and it’s a hat. It will seem too big but remember that it will still be 100 stitches, there just happen to be another 100 on the inside. I find knitting in the round double to not be any different. Just cast on and make your join as normal. Unlike knitting on sticks though, you never turn your work so you don’t have to think through reversing everything when you turn. You just knit your pattern one way and it magically turns out opposite when you look inside the hat! Good luck to you! ❤️🇨🇦❤️

    Is it possible to do double knitting in entrelac?

  • @TheLifeofTMT

    @TheLifeofTMT

    Hi there, I've been entrelac knitting for quite a few years. I don't believe you can double knit an entrelac pattern because of the constant turning of the work and the constant pick up of stitches making the zig zag pattern. But you never know. I'm sure someone out there could possibly find a way to do it. Maybe you. :)

    Carlos, I think you are purling backwards--which is fine as long as you knit the stitches in the back of the stitch on the next row. I know this is not your usual method and it is kind of you to demonstrate for throwers, but I have had sad experiences with people who rather intuitively purl backwards when they first learn, and then all the stitches end up twisted (and very tight) because noone ever corrected them. A sleeve knitted with backward purling which is not corrected on the next knit row will actually torque and is quite a mess. I do realize that demonstrating knitting is a thankless task, what with the myraid variations that exist all around the world and Ido appreciate the effort. I have several of your books and very much enjoy them! My Christmas ornaments suffer from red yarn showing through no matter how much I try to stagger the twists, so I wonder if double knitting might be a better way?

    I noticed this too. I purl counterclockwise, and I see Carlos purled clockwise. I didn't know what difference it made to the project though.
