    @@BurninGems be careful. We hiked it over 40 yrs ago. Really all you have to do is figure out which county the trail is or was in. Drive the unpaved county side roads. Look for round rocks. My dad wasn't too happy when I put about 40 pounds of geodes into his 1965 Mustang. The geode you cracked open is exactly like the ones I found. White crystals inside. Was hoping for purple or green. Still cool.

    @@BurninGems nah. We're from champaign and our troop was sort of rowdy. Some were playing in the creeks along the road...enfuriated a farmer. That trail was sort of in the process of either building up or being destroyed. The bypass sections where we walked roads were because of losing access. We also went caving in Buckners cavern. (Indiana) That place got blasted when someone broke their neck inside. They had to dynamite the entrance to get them out I heard.

    I think geodes are extraordinary. And I know a person like that... not much on the outside you wouldn't give him a second thought, but to those who have really really gotten to know him, and it's taken a long long time, he is an absolute geode, brilliant on the inside. Never judge anything by the outside.

    It depends on how they look when broken open. Lots of bright shiny crystals and the size of the crystals. Sometimes the color if the crystals increase the value. You should yalk to the local elders or whoever is in charge of the village and see what they think.

    Beautiful! Geodes are a great mystery I'm curious ...did the woman who pulled a crystal out of one of the smaller geodes buy it? Is that why they were not allowing other people to look?

  • @BurninGems

    @BurninGems

    5 жыл бұрын

    No, she and her husband bought the whole Geode that was cracked open. (assumin' you mean around @3:14 part) They paid for it before he would crack it. They are cheaper before cracked open because it is a gamble whats in it. This one was a double ($) and on top of that, had the huge calcite crystal in the center of one piece on the bed of quartz ($$)! So if they were to buy the rock after he broke it, he would of charged more because of it being such a nice show specimen. As it was, they probably paid 1/2 or less his retail prices because it was a gamble. (only speculation as I don't recall the amount paid, etc) He knew I was filming it, and wanted to get it on camera for them. So hopefully they eventually found this video i put up of their geode being cracked open. They were very happy and i think came back the following year.

    @@BurninGems Oh thanks for the explanation . They were very lucky indeed to get such an amazing geode. Here's a little story for you...A man asked my brother if he could hunt geodes on his property. The stranger had two buckets of medium-sized geodes. At the next family reunion my brother gave me one. It was filled with water and I drank it. Ever since then my family says I look younger which my brother swears is due to drinking the water. Even my doctors cannot believe my age So I hope the geode water is lucky to you too!

    Wow. If that was a diamond that would be cool. Wonder if there was a hole in the geod to allow water to enter or if the water was trapped inside. If so that would be considered the oldest existing water.

  • @BurninGems

    @BurninGems

    5 жыл бұрын

    I dont know if that's the oldest, as comets might be older... Lol. I'm under the impressing that the water gets trapped during formation. Formation is in a hard shale layer. No water currently going through the layer where they are found. Other folks seem to think he has to soak them and let the water percolate in. Personally, i have bought some to be opened and like 4 years later when i finally cracked them open, they still had water in them. Didnt see how soaking water would go in but not seep out also.... So i think it is trapped at time of formation. (few million years old they say...)

    Best places will vary... These are from Missouri, but there are other places with similar geodes. Mexico has geodes but are usually smaller. Madagascar has smaller also but are very white sparkly crystals that looks like sugar. Those are literally called Madagascar sugar geodes. (Not the confectionary type edible sugar geodes!) And of course Brazil has their famous amethyst geodes or cathedrals. Those from Brazil are in harder rock, so it is so much more work to mine them. These Keokuk Geodes from Missouri are sold by Steve Woodruff from Woodie's Rock Shop. There web address is: www.fabulouskeokukgeodes.com/ I highly recommend a purchase from him and if you find him at a rock show it is so much more entertaining to have it broken open right in front of you!

    @@StephRenee812 sometimes the trip is worth the journey... You need to figure out closest location. These are from the Keokuk area, so you can Google Keokuk geodes. Another spot in USA is Indiana, but I dont think they arr as nice as the Keokuk geodes. There are also geodes in Mexico and also Madagascar if those are closer. (Have to keep the mind open for international viewers!) The other way is to look local for a rock and mineral club and sometimes when they have shows Or from fellow members, you can buy them. I do hope you find the geode if your dreams!

    Only as much as it can be sold for. every one is different base on size and crystals. This one was probably about $400-$600 together because of the size of the crystal, etc. Others I've seen are only about $100 or less. It's really various amounts based on the total presentation of the Geode.

    I know it's an old comment, but like all things in life, if it isn't food or shelter it can only cost as much as one is willing to share. Think of this, Your computer is just sand, silver, gold, and oil cooked in the right way and assembled by robots, but yet you still pay lots of money for that. This is mined right from the earth so the money you pay is really the money to pay the miners that dug the natural piece of art from the earth. Never think of these as just rocks. Also remember the lively hood you are contributing to when you purchase one. We are all connected. Thank you for watching!

Some more, some less. So its very subjective to the stone. The one in the video was about $150 I think, unbroken. This past show, he sold one that was so unique that he offered to buy it back after he cracked it for a family.... $3000! Checkout www.fabulouskeokukgeodes.com for more info!

    Couldn't you cut them open with a wet saw?

  • @BurninGems

    @BurninGems

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes but... If you take a geode to a saw (diamond blade with coolant or at least water feed) then you might cut right through a big crystal and ruin the value or beauty. By using the "soil pipe wrench" the chain wrapped around it has carbide "teeth" that puts pressure in lots of little spots around the geode. Thus the outer rind will crack along the weakest point all along the path of that chain when tightened and then immidiatly slacken to prevent any additional damage unlike if a saw blade continued through. It is also cleaner because no rock bits are washed inside of the geode, less cleanup and not as much damage if there were any delicate crystals. You can also cut around the edge and rotate it so it only cuts a few mm at a time till it is free, but only if they are small. Then also the "fit" still isn't as clean as cracking it is, because the kerth of the saw blade is gone on the edges afterwards. Sorry for the long reply, hope it makes sense!
