I've watched this film maybe a dozen times and it still gives me chills. I'm 54 years old and I won't watch it alone. It has an eerie and foreboding quality in the script and great cinematography. Maybe it's the black and white and how effectively it uses light and shadows to help tell the story. A really masterpiece!
One of the greatest cinema villains of all time.

Only a brilliant actress could pull this off and make it work Barbara stanwyck she's magnificent in this! I read something once they got the Columbo TV series off Edward g Robinson role in this! He's awesome as usual
Does anyone notice that Jean Heather has a line that connects this film to her other film, "Going My Way"? It won the Oscar first best picture of 1944. She's in Walter's car and takes him up on his offer to give her a ride if he's "going my way." The film was nominated for ten academy awards. Double Indemnity was nominated for seven.
Fred McMurray, at his best, along with Edward G Robinson..!
Thank you Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder!

One of the most imitated films of all time.
And the funny thing: This blonde whig is really working on black-and-white film. On colored film it would look totaly stupid. And the fact that Stanwyck was already in her late 30s made her role really good. A younger actress would not have made it so good.

@@HermitComics I had a marketing teacher in university that reminded me of Fred MacMurray. You know the kind, tall, shifty eyed, leading some kind of a double life. Ya so maybe he has the usual wife and kids at home together with a dog. Picture this. While teaching he would stand in the middle of the room give a long speech about a product he was trying to promote as an example of marketing. I mean a long speech that lasted an hour. He was good. What made it more impressive was the class was at night on the 9th floor and the glass windows overlooked the city lights. It felt like he had a broad on the side for extra comfort. He was somewhat of an attractive guy. I remember handing in a marketing assignment. He took it and threw it into his briefcase which had a copy of playboy inside. He was always exhausted and grumpy after class. He would sit there and light a cigarette in the usual Fred MacMurray style. Let's face it taking a university class can be like living in a fantasy land.

Funny what a dame can lead a man to do…
fred McMurray was also in Disney productons, one or more, y even made it to be the patriach of my three sons. i thought riskee for a family show as i felt his character had already been tainted with this classic y the apartment with Shirley Mac Lane y jack lemmon. if you kill your spouse repercussions occur. just look at king David y Beersheba. israel suffered miserable from his adulteras affair with her y having her husband killed by having him placed at the front line of the battle.
