Double Homicide/The Appalachian Trail, Couple Tortured/Murdered Duncannon, PA

Hello everyone, in today's case the video is number 4 and the series of Appalachian Trail tragedies.
this case took place in September of 1990 when a young couple had set of in June from Maine to hike south on the AT. they made it to almost the halfway point..
Geoffrey Hood 26, from Signal Mountain, Tennessee, and Molly LaRue 25, from Shaker Heights, Ohio, had met in Salina, Kansas at a church-sponsored program for vulnerable young people. They decided to hike the Appalachian Trail together over a six-month period, starting in Mount Katahdin in Maine on June 4, 1990. Geoff’s trail name was Clevis, and Molly’s was Nalgene.
On September 11, 1990, they had hiked to Duncannon, Pennsylvania, and stayed in the trailside Doyle Hotel, not far from the halfway mark of their trip. Most nights they stayed in their tent or in one of the communal trail shelters, so this was a treat for the couple.
On September 12, 1990, Geoff and Molly headed back onto the trail making it as far as the Thelma Marks Shelter, near the top of Cove Mountain. It was a three-sided lean-to, around 30 feet from the trail, surrounded by trees.
Early on the morning of September 13, the couple was asleep in their sleeping bags and attacked. Geoff was shot 3 times at around 4 feet, with a .22 caliber pistol, to the head, back, and abdomen.
I can't even go into what Molly went through. It makes me sick to know there are actual humans out there that could do such things! I'm glad he's rotting in prison where he belongs!
My thoughts and prayers go out to both of their families 🙏 and wishing them only the fond memories of the lost🙏 And this family brought a tear to my eye during their statements about sentencing. They are such wonderful people and had two beloved family members stolen from them! What is wrong with our society? Thankfully the man responsible was caught and is rotting in prison where he belongs!
Please be respectful in the comments if you choose to leave them 🙏 These are real people that have gone through things most us can't even imagine.

There are 14 known murders on the Appalachian Trail. To date (12.8.21) there are zero on the Pacific Crest Trail. I’ve written about this & my theory is that the AT has more trailheads in more populous towns than does the PCT. The PCT is also more technical (whether desert survival in the southern 700 or sub alpine experience once trekkers move north of Idyllwild.) What Bill Bryson wrote (an outstanding book, btw) was true in 1997. But that’s 25 years ago & there have been several brutal, senseless stranger-encounters that ended in homicide since then. Only two things can be said regarding this case: firstly and most importantly these victims were Christians. Secondly although I am a dogmatic proponent of hiking armed they were ambushed in their sleep. So even readily accessible arms may not have saved them. Sadly we will never know. Bryan you were wise to omit the details of this case because they are heinous & BRUTAL. Take note: here’s what could have prevented this: Walmart sells jingle bells the size of small jawbreakers. They fit perfectly in a prescription bottle or Altoids tin. Carry a low tech alarm kit that consists of 100-200feet of kevlar string, a few zip ties and 3-5 small jingle bells. Run a trip line perimeter before going to sleep. The total cost is less than $10 and it could save your life or at very least provide peace of mind. Sleeping in a shack, away from society, away from surveillance cameras and far away from help in 2021 is dangerous. It just is. RIP the victims of murder on the AT. God have mercy on us all🕯

Sadly, this is YET ANOTHER REASON why myself and many others have been warning people for years now: Never........EVER.......go camping or hiking without a firearm. This is especially necessary when traveling alone, or just a man/woman couple. Women and couples who aren't packing a firearm are SOFT TARGETS for violent criminals & freaks. Women shouldn't be traveling ANYWHERE all alone.......not even in a city, without a firearm and knowing how to use it. Police can't do a thing to "protect you". Please if you’re going to be out on any trails, be ultra prepared. And even be prepared for what might seem to be the impossible, and take caution of those whom might be out out there for the means of hiding from the law or other reasons. Be safe everyone.

Love from Ontario, Canada! Thank you for sharing a ghastly and a tragic story with so much of compassion! Moral of the tragic story: Be prepared for the worse, keep a taser gun, bear spray, swiss knife, walking sticks, perhaps a guard/protection dog, etc. ready. If a stranger engages one of you in conversation, at least one other member should keep an oversight from a distance, always ready for action. I mean we can suggest so much; it is easier said than done. Every situation is different. People that you meet on the trails are generally good people, that is what our experience is. But then who knows?

It's not about being cool, or "bad," or the macho factor. Matter of fact, I was always satisfied if my wife was packing, because she was an expert marksman, woman, markswoman, too. (She was also a cop, which cut through a bunch of regulation and paperwork, depending on where we were at.) Someone in the party who knows what they're doing. No brag, but I trust myself because I don't miss. Kindness, good grief... I hush now, out of respect for Molly and Jeffry.

I live near Chambersburg and Shippensburg, PA. In the late 1980s, we had another horrific attack happen on the Appalachian Trail near here. It involved in the shooting of two women, one of whom died. Molly is my daughter-in-law's aunt (she was born a couple of years after this incident.) I did the AT in 2017 and dropped down to the Cove Mountain shelter (the replacement for Thelma Marks) to pay my respects. It was a surreal experience. No one else was around. I could definitely feel Molly and Geoff's spirit. When I got to Duncannon, I was met by Jim LaRue. He had driven out from Cleveland to meet me. We had lunch at the Doyle. Although the circumstances were unfortunate, it was one of the highlights of my hike. An interesting twist to this sad story is that a good friend of mine who I met and hiked with for portions of my 1977 PCT thru hike was actually hiking in the area the day of the recovery. Cove Mountain is his go to hike. He encountered the police and turned around. Small world.

I know a young man who walked the entire Appalachian trail. I meet him around the time he had graduated from high school. He was a long time boyfriend of my best friends daughter. I really thought they were get married. Such a nice kid! I think he had gone through the break up and that what prompted this hike that took a couple months. When I ran into him a year later at my local pharmacy he was working there and in pharmacy school. I thought that really cool. A doctor of pharmacy. I had no idea he had wanted to be a doctor. My daughter is in pharmacy school but she has known that she wanted to be a pharmacist since kindergarten.I asked him about his career decision. He said you know about me doing the Appalachian trail. I said no I had not heard about that. He’s like yah , I did it. Lots of time to think and make decisions. I am guessing that the Appalachian trail changed his life. He suffered a breakup with the girl he thought would be his wife and have his children. He had been broken. Not wanting to face the next days. The Appalachian trail gave him confidence. Built strengths in him. Cleared all the the negative things out of his head. Coming back to our little town to become a local pharmacist. And hopefully by now has found that special lady to call his wife, I hope so. Maybe I will get to run into him again one day. It’s always nice to see when the local kids grow up to be. As I’m older and the local kids are raising families of their own now. I just believe that the Appalachian trail while I do realize tragedies happen it’s a place to find renewed strength. Clear you mind and work through all the loses in life. By the time you reach the end of the trail I believe you have a better plan than the one before you started. I’m happy the young man I knew had the opportunity to hike that trail and to work out the old and find a new. LA
