Dostoevsky on Evil and the Problem of Evil

He believes nothing could justify the type of evil he describes here. And if some greater plan could "justify" it, he wants no part of that plan. This video also includes a discussion of the argument from evil

Dostoevsky's description of the cruelty done to that little girl is hauntingly horrific.

I think most people can relate to being in a difficult position and later some armchair quarterback starts to criticize. You protest "You weren't there, you don't understand!" This is the person who has never stood outside of time and has never created billions of people with free will. None of us can say what we would do, or what God had in front of Himself as a decision. Some of us will say "I trust that you are a good God" and some say "God, how could you do such an evil thing?" This is the lesson Jesus was explaining about acting as judge over God in Matthew 25:24-30: “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. “ ‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Thanks. I would start at the Stanford or Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy and type in "Theodicies" or "The problem of evil." The key search term for books is "problem of evil" or "argument from evil." Also search "philosophy of religion textbook" and you will find nice selections about evil and theodicies (buy cheaper older editions).

Greetings Kez. For your study on theodicy, you may consider reading 'Philosophy of religion ' by John Hick. In particular, you may focus on his articulation of the 'Irenaean theodicy'. Hicks approach is modern and relatively easy to follow. His argument ultimately has a long history thought that goes back to 2nd century AD (to St. Irenaeus of Lyons). It should also be quite accessible to you. All the best with your study, Kez!
