The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

At 12 years old I walked several miles to see Kirsten in concert, my first live opera singer. I knew nothing then but Musetta's Waltz she sang for an encore. At 16 I saw Sutherland in Lucia. At 19 I saw Corelli in Fanciulla and Chenier with Tebaldi. Then later that Tosca with the eternal "Vittoria" which melted me. I saw 10 of the super stars of the last century.

Lucky I saw her also, and many going back to 1957, saw even Schipa and Tagliavini,i did enjoy Bjoerling in 1958, Tucker , GDS and of course all the rest in both Chicago, NY, SF and Italy in 1959 in Milan at age 19, saw MDM as Otello, he was amazing then. They where the best but all gone now.

True, I saw her a few times years apart and she always sounded excellent, in her book "A time to sing" She mentions two of her favorite tenors that she sang with, Bjoerling and Tucker, I met her after a concert she gave in 1975 in Los Angeles, and she was a very classy and beautiful woman still, the voice sounded as fresh as when I saw her in opera in the 1960's. I can say Tucker also vocally held up well, I saw him about 20 times over many long years. Today not as many greats as back then.

Opera has declined and will never recover . All of the great singers have passed; no one is being taunted the correct time-tested correct method of singing; it’s as if the current voice teachers haven’t been taught correctly themselves.

I quite agree. Opera today has none of the vocal splendor of past generations. This may very well be the last wake-up call for the operatic community to rethink its options for the future of this wonderful musical medium!

Dorothy Kirsten said she was born in 1917 but was actually born in 1910! She jumped in to save a performance at the Metropolitan Opera in 1979 and there is a part of it on KZread. She sounds fantastic! People used to get her and the Great Dramatic Soprano Kirsten Flagstad mixed up. She said "I don't know why they get us mixed up...she is twice my age and twice my size"...Exaggerations on both counts! Flagstad was born only 15 years before Dorothy Kirsten and was not that heavy for a Wagnerian soprano...

The ability to express rage and anger like no other tenor? Yes. Interaction with soprano? Gabriella Tucci: MDM was the greatest tenor I ever sang with. Tebaldi; Mario was wonderful to work with. Gulietta Simonata. Mario was a friend on and off the stage. He was not only a singer, but an artist as well. He studied with great tenacity during his entire life. Subtlety and nuance were not his strengths, but there are many examples of MDM singing with nuance here on YT. What you possibly are unaware of, is this is live life Opera. Its not a movie on CBS. If you look at live videos of DelMonaco performing you will see his shoulders rise very often when singing. This was clearly part of his breathing technique. Without such full breath he would not have the extraordinary vocalism we see Herr displayed.
