I just glanced through Arnold's encyclopedia today and saw shots of Frank Zane in his vacuum pose from the '70s and Steve Reeves in the arms-up pose from the '50s -- so much better aesthetically than the modern era where you must ask, "Is Kai Greene pregnant?" -- a title of a KZread video from a few years ago. Very fitting question.

I am 40 and I scaled back heavy bodybuilding training, because things just start to nag. I switched to Athlean X, a year ago, because that dude knows his shit about properly exhausting muscles in such a way that you don't have to slam extremely heavy weights. In all honesty it's impossible on his program. At the end of the day, stuff stopped nagging, and I actually saw new gains. Sort of goes to what Frank Zane has said over the years. Your muscles don't know how much weight you're lifting. They just know how to feel torched and worked.

I’ve come to realize this more as a younger older man. I’m in my 40’s and it’s hard training the bb way sometimes because of my injuries so it looks like I’m going to be following jay and dorians advice on training with injuries. Yoga and functional style training is important as we get older. It helps us train longer because of the recovery from mobility work.

This was a great interview, I think more or so the image now that is men have in our head are those of action figures in my day it was Arnold, Stallone, Van Dam the list goes on. Or your favorite wrestling star growing up as a kid. Not all but some of these guys were on drugs. Growing up I wanted to look like the rock and that’s what got me into Lifting, I never competed but I’ve had my fair share of injuries and my third shoulder injury being my most recent has made me switch to just yoga as of recently. I laughed a hard when he said he took the psychedelics and said Man my body is fucked up. I’m glad I can realize that at 33 and not 53 and make a change now. We live in a image driven society where sometimes you feel like if you don’t look a certain way your weak or inferior. I know I had a built an image and it crushed me when my body changed but I am seeing now it’s more about longevity and moving properly as our bodies were intended to move vs those short term gains or PRs of lifts.

I'm 56 and I'm starting to lift "Heavy" but it's a relative term "Heavy". My point is light weights and reps are good for teaching the body and mind neuromuscular recruitment. Going "Heavy" means you've trained and conditioned sufficiently to minimize injury. I can only speak for myself, it took me 8 months before I went "Heavy" so I'm not feeling those pains.

It’s crazy because I emailed his supplement company to get the book Blood and Guts but they didn’t give me any insight on how to get an old copy. My other concern is the danger of HIIT training. Maybe Dorian should have periodized less intensity periods with more intense periods of training to prevent his injuries. Maybe the current bodybuilders are getting smarter using more stabilization exercises for smaller muscles and time under tension movements.

Going heavy all the time is a mistake plus steroids age you and are detrimental to your bones and tendons. You have to understand that roids don't build your bones and tendons they build your muscles. Your training should be a cycle of extremely light weight wk of 35-60 reps (extremly light), a wk of medium weight of 15-25 reps, and then one week out of the month can be heavy 6-10 reps. Going heavy every workout like Dorian and Coleman did is detrimental to the muscle building process because that sort of traing frazzles your nervous system and your muscles can't absorb that sort of stress week after week. I'm so glad I cycle my training, I'm in my 50's and on my heavy week I curl the 80lb dumbells but on my light week I curl the 15lb dumbells. This is the best I've ever felt. There are so many individuals in ther 50's and beyond who are still weight training and enjoying it. Dorian turned into a sour puss. He abused roids and fckd his body up. I don't do roids. Yates is a shell of himself not someone to follow unless you wanna be a sour puss yoga practioner.

Both Dorian and Leslie Kai Greene ramble a lot, and make little sense. At least Dorian doesn't make up words like Kai does.

@@Horneycorn I always found Dorian's training methods excessive, unnecessary, destructive, and invalid and unsound, especially for young, impressionable bodybuilders. The same goes for the principles and practices of Mike Mentzer and Ronnie Coleman. I would greatly advise anyone to stick to the tutelage of Frank Zane, Lee Haney, Dexter Jackson, Jay Cutler, and Mike O'Hearn. Stimulate, don't annihilate, and you'll still be training decades from now. And, I'm not short sighted. I'm actually near sighted. I wear glasses.(lol!)

I've met him. Great guy. If I could create an analogy for him regarding "you were a six time Mr Olympia...maintain some blah blah blah" they obviously don't know what went into it. It was for competition to the highest degree much like having a show and go dragster. Keep it a near #2 condition and tuned to hit 6 sec 1/4 miles all day...be polishing on it till 2 am after its 17th clear coat fix. Why the fock would you do all that if it's not going to shows any more.. Idiots.
