Dorian Gray & Basil Hallward | Beautiful Crime

'Together we've created something beautiful'
Recently I finished rereading Dorian Gray and watched the movie (yes, I haven't before) so naturally I had to vid it. I felt a bit dissapointed when I realised that no one really vids it anymore and Ben Barnes's character appears more as young Sirius Black than Dorian himself. And don't get me wrong. I think he is the perfect fancast and I find it really coo than even Ben Barnes knows about it. But I still find Dorian Gray undervidded. So I had to change that, even if I feel not many people will watch but still.
With that out of the way, I have three videos planned for this fandom, but it will probbaly take a bit, as I started a job and know my time for vidding is reduced to the days when I don't, that is if you don't count doing other things like house chores and stuff lol. Now onto the vid, I didn't know which one to make first, but I chose Dorian and Basil, since this is how it all started. As f up as it is, I have always found their story fassinating from the first time reading the book, andalso very tragic. I mean you have the artist/muse trope where one loved too much and the other who loved himself. And it ends, how it ends. I would like to dedicate this to Oscar Wilde, although I am not sure there is youtube on the after life.
From what I read online he intended Basil'w confession to be even more evident but the original version was not published. I think he would have been pleased with the adaptation although it does change some things, but I think it keeps the esence of the book.

the only person i feel sorry for in that story is Basil. He was surrounded by corrupt people whereas himself was a chaste soul .his demise broke my heart

Couldn't have said it better myself. His only weakness of character was that he worshipped Dorian 'too much' and that's what brought him to his doom eventually.

I think that it was actually a very flawed thing. He was obsessed with his looks, there was no interest in Dorian’s character, his personality. It was a toxic obsession that fueled the portrait’s evil soulless nature

He was too blindly in love with Dorian to see that, especially at the beginning when he thought him pure. But Basil refused to see his dark side even later when it was too late. To him Dorian could still be saved.

Once again I agree with you that Ben Barnes deserves more than being "known" for Sirius Black. He is wonderful in all of his roles so thank you for showing his interpretation of Dorian Gray in an incredible way.

I mean, Basil’s scarf is a pretty ‘red paint’ splattered scarf. I can’t blame Dorian for holding onto it… even if it was ultimately his downfall 🙃

I always got the sense that Dorian kept it not only because he became obsessed with blood, but because he never could escape Basil, just as Basil could never escape him. They were always intertwined, much to Dorian's attempts at being free from Basil. I think that Dorian loved Basil as well in his own morbid/egoistic sense. He wanted Basil to always adore him but at the same time kept him away, never allowed him to even give him advice or get too close. Typical narcissistic/manipulative behaviour. Not to mention blaming Basil for his downfall, because of the painting, completely ignoring how much Henry manipulated him all those years.

from all languages you could talk, u decided to talk the truth 🚶 Edit: I also wonder if Dorian was always a Nacissist and he just discovered this part of him thanks to Lord Henry or if the circumstances made him like that...

Another video I’d failed to comment on 🥴 ‘save my soul at any cause’, that line is so so them. Basil tried his hardest to save Dorian...and like you said, even to Dorian’s detriment. I really shipped these two and you capture these two perfectly, the power play between the two is palpable with these two, it just works so well! I love it so much, I will appreciate the fact that they added the kiss scene into the movie. Wilde would be proud lol.

I will admit this is the one I wanted you to see the most cause it's Basil and Dorian and I knew you liked them best (me too, even if I also ship him with Henry) I am really glad you liked it. 😊

The problem that there is a different contrast between the novel and the movie in the novel keep in mind that Dorian Gray isn't gay

  • @TheSongIsEnding

Maybe it's not explicit in the sense that we imagine now with our 21st century mind, but there are many (not so) subtle hints that there is more than meets the eye between Dorian, Basil and Henry. The movie mainly picked on that and added more and in a way that makes sense for the characters in my opinion

I literally told the first person that he is. The censored version hides a lot of it, but even in that it's kinda obvious if you actually read between the lines. I would say that no amount of censorship managed to hide it, but I also understand why it's not so clear if you haven't read the original. I personally could tell from my first read of the censored. P.S. To those not reading the uncensored one, you are missing a lot, especially from Basil's confession..
