' i wanted to tell my wife 'I think I can win this' but had to control myself and said I think I can make the leaderboard , and as the race progressed, kept telling the team and the team director I am getting stronger and stronger. Eventually they could see it and let me try '. Or something like it. He knew what his body was capable of, and felt it in his veins and muscles. I don't deny he had talent, but still, he was old.

I don’t think I buy the motor bit. Not because I don’t think someone would not try it, but because if someone were to get caught, it would make the whole sport a joke. When using doping products, it can be rationalized that at least they’re riding, even if boosting their physiology. A motor would just make a mockery that could literally destroy the sport. Using a motor isn’t doping, it’s flat out cheating in a way the general public would never accept.

In the 1960 Olympics a Danish cyclist died during a road race, turned out he had taken some doping that affected his blood. (NPR) The first signs of doping? The Russians were the leaders in doping during every Olympic game from 1964, especially their female weight lifters

Look at todays stage. He said he was going to go on the Monte Grappa. Everyone knew it and with a couple miles left to climb, he just took off leaving everyone in the dust, cresting the summit and riding 30km alone downhill to the finish, winning by more than two minutes. Wins SIX stages. Not field sprint stages, which happens but climbing stages/TTs . Six was nearly eight or nine, as he had two 2nds, not to mention getting pipped at the line to finish 3rd in the opening stage. Largest margin of victory in FIFTY NINE YEARS.
