Door Lock Actuator Repair (3rd Gen 4runner)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this video, we show you how to repair the electric door lock actuator on a 3rd Gen Toyota 4runner. Instead of replacing the whole actuator, we show you how to replace just the motor which saves you a lot of money.
*PARTS LIST*
*Door Lock Actuator Motor
ebay.us/ysKEdU
**If you want to replace the whole actuator with a Toyota OEM replacement or possibly an aftermarket option, here’s some part numbers and links:
*1996-2000 Left Front Door Lock Actuator #69120-35050
amzn.to/31C0Vwx
*1996-2000 Right Front Door Lock Actuator #69110-35050
amzn.to/48NGRb7
*1996-2002 Left Rear Door Lock Actuator #69140-35060
amzn.to/3wTcra0
*1996-2002 Right Rear Door Lock Actuator #69130-35060
This one is made by Aisin which did make OEM components for Toyota
ebay.us/tRQM5K
**For 2001 and 2002 Models, I was told by our local Toyota dealer you cannot just buy the actuator for the front doors. You have to buy the entire lock assembly. It seems that this might be bad information from what we've heard from a couple people. It sounds like you could buy the same actuators for the front doors listed above for the 1996-2000 models and it will work for the 2001 and 2002 models as well. But, please do your own research and confirm this is the case before making a purchase.

Been fighting this problem for a few years now, finally swapped out the motors a couple weeks ago. I sure could have used this video then. It would have saved a lot of time, but by the 4th motor swap it was only taking about 15 minutes a door. First door took a little over an hour. Love you videos, and this will help a lot of people out! Thanks for all your 4runner videos, you have a knack for making a tricky job so much easier :)

Tim - I picked up my first T4R a couple of weeks ago and have been going through a number of your video tutorials. Decided to tackle this one first. The vehicle came without a key fob so did not notice the bad door lock actuators right away. After installing a Viper alarm system last week, I noticed both front door locks were operating intermittently. Spent a few hours at the local pick a part practicing on taking out the actuators and salvaging a few extra clips. Ordered the motors from your link and received them today. Pulled the actuators, replaced the motors, and put it all back together (the salvaged clips came in handy), The locks are working perfectly. Much appreciated!

As always, great video!! I've replace all 4 door and trunk actuators on my SIL's '06 Camry. I bought the door units from an ebay rebuilder that goes by actuatorplus. He provides a lifetime warrenty when you return the core. 3 of the door units were installed ~3 years ago and still work fine. The 4th one was just installed last week. That said, had I watched your video first, I would have used your approach.

Yeah, I bet this guy is basically doing what we show in the video. Some lock modules are more complicated than others. I recently tried to fix a 1st Gen Tacoma one but the motor is a bit different and the module is more complicated. So, I failed at fixing the Tacoma module but I haven't given up hope for an affordable fix for those as well. I just need to do a bit more research on it and hopefully I'll figure it out. Glad you like the video and thanks for taking the time to comment.

another great video, timmy! much appreciated! if anyone wants to avoid removing the door handle for fear you'll break any of the plastic clips, i find it quite easy to remove the door panel by just turning it at an angle. the door handle will slide right through the opening.

Great video! Really informative. Im struggling so much with the exterior door handle latch it’s crazy how easy you did yours. EDIT: My issue with the “german helmet” was when i applied pressure to it the plastic tab on the exterior door handle would flex. I used a small knipex channel lock to squeeze the “german helmet” and the plastic tab that holds it. Popped out real easy.

I have similar problems with all my doors and my rear hatch. it only seems to be a problem when the weather gets hot and it sits outside in the sun. Does heat cause week motors to act up? Or could it be a body fuse box issue? And is the rear hatch actuator similar to the side doors? If you can post a video on the 3rd gen rear hatch problems such as lock getting stuck and actuator problems. Your videos have been awesome and helped keep my old 3rd gen running strong as a daily driver. thank you for taking the time to run us through so many repairs.

Hello. This is one of the most thorough videos I've ever seen on KZread with great explanations. I have a question though, I need to remove the little wiring harness that connects to the lock cylinder itself, since the tabs broke and I need to replace it. Is it possible to remove that little harness from the door without taking out the actuator? I can't see inside the door to look for any clips.

  • @TimmyTheToolman

Hey Andrew, thanks for the nice compliment. I don't know if you can easily separate the harness that leads to door lock actuator from the main body harness. It might be a case where you have to either de-pin the plug and put a new one on or cut the wires to the connector and splice a replacement in.

I actually did this repair on my '02 SR5 a few months back. The 00-02 has a different mechanism on the locks to sense their position and to lock/unlock them. My advice is to be careful in that area, cuz i broke my front passenger off and had to hunt down a replacement sensor/harness. Definitely worth doing though, especially for all 4 doors. Yields a very crisp and positive lock/unlock.

I haven't done this project, my locks are still working, but when I do someday I think I will consider sealing the door lock unit shut with large shrink-tube and a heat gun. Either that or else some special tape that is resistant to heat/cold and water, but the shrink tube could be removed without leaving any residue, which is what I like about it. It's not hard to figure out what size shrink tube to buy, but you would need to know the measurements of the door lock unit first. Since the door lock unit isn't precisely square, the best bet for shrink-tube to work would be if it is 2:1 shrink ratio instead of 1.5:1, (I think those are the common ratio's but it's been a while). You can also make a tube out of some paper to see what fits over the device, without much slack. I haven't tried it, not sure it will work, but if it does I think it would be swell, (if you want to be able to be able to service it again someday), so I thought I would throw the idea out there.

Great Video. I needed to reprogram a new fob on a 99 , which included locking and unlocking the door multiple times. During that unsuccessful procedure, the door would not completely unlock, which I believe is due to this part weakening. I avoided this job for numerous reasons, but not have some confidence! I'm just wondering...with all this work involved, and potential hassle of re-work, due to a failed part, wouldn't this be one of those times to bite the bullet an pay the $140 for the oem real part....for piece of mind. I understand every $ counts and for some it's not an option, but I with all the mods and maintenance, it stinks to re-do something so tedious. Just my .02

  • @TimmyTheToolman

    @TimmyTheToolman

    3 жыл бұрын

That door actuator mechanism is very simple device from what you saw in the video. 99% of the time, the failure is going to be with that little RC motor. If you crack open the case carefully, get the motor in and the case either glued or ziptied back together securely, you will succeed with this repair and save yourself quite a bit of money. It's really not that difficult of a job. Just like anything, it's the learning curve of doing it for the first time that makes it take longer. If for some reason you had to do it again, you would be able to do it much quicker a second time. So, I think you should just replace the motor and save yourself some money. Good luck and Happy Wrenching!

But continuously locking and unlocking too close together causes them to not want to work even though I can hear them and they slightly move. Hey Sarah, there's a very good chance your actuator might be able to be fixed like we show in this video but we don't have experience with 5th Gen 4runner door actuators so no guarantee. I imagine the reason for the high price is Toyota doesn't sell the actuator separately anymore and you have to buy the whole lock assembly. I would go to your local Toyota dealership parts department and ask them if they sell just the actuator or do you have to buy the whole lock assembly. There might be aftermarket suppliers selling the lock assemblies on Ebay or Amazon and you'll just have to do a search to find out.

Your videos are awesome and have helped by repair and/or replace countless issues on my 1999 T4R Limited and 2006 T4R Sport. Thanks! After performing this door lock actuator motor replacement the power door locks have worked perfectly. However, for some reason I'm now (a few months later) having an issue where the power door locks (whether by the door button or key fob) the door will unlock but the lock button does not work. Any thoughts?

Maybe it's something with that driver door lock. I'm pretty sure that one communicates with the others. If it isn't working correctly, the others follow suit. So, maybe the electronics of that driver door lock actuator are bad. Maybe you could snag a used one off a wrecked rig at a PicknPull and this way you don't risk too much money if the replacement actuator doesn't fix the issue. They also sell cheap aftermarket replacement actuators on Amazon and Ebay. Hope you figure out the problem.

@@TimmyTheToolman Thanks for the quick reply; much appreciated. I'll give that a look. I've also seen on forums that it could be an issue with the electrical junction box located below and to the left of the steering wheel, behind the upper plastic cover plate.

@@TimmyTheToolman This repair was great and a low cost solution. Now I'm having a problem where the key fob and door panel lock switches will unlock, but no lock, the doors. Have you ever dealt with this issue. Does not seem to be an actuator problem, but maybe rather a power door lock relay failure? Do you know if there is a replaceable relay on the block assembly located under the driver's side kick panel? Maybe the R2 relay?

The fact your doors don't lock when you turn it on might have something to do with your alarm system. As for the door lock unlocking when you pull the handle, it doesn't work that way. You have to unlock it first by pulling the lock mechanism up first and then you can use the handle to open the door.

Great vid I never knew you could change the motor out. I was just going to deal with them not working well because of how much it cost for the whole assembly. Have you seen any issues with the actual door latch not working well. My driver door latch doesn’t engage unless you slam the shit out of it, very annoying.

I haven't had a problem with the locking mechanism but maybe if you take it out and lubricate it really well, it might start working better for you. If it still is giving you issues, maybe you can pull the whole lock assembly from a wrecked rig at a PicknPull. My local Picknpull wanted $40 for it.

I can't say for sure if the motors will work for the 2001 and 2002 models, but if I had to guess, I would bet they do. The motors aren't very expensive so you don't have much to lose if they won't work.

Sorry for the question, but I'm slightly confused. You have the comment... "**For 2001 and 2002 Models, you cannot just buy the actuator for the front doors. You have to buy the entire lock assembly." does this mean the little motors cannot be replaced and you have to buy the whole assembly or can you just replace the little motors if that's all you need? Thanks!

  • @TimmyTheToolman

It means they don't sell the door lock actuator separately if you wanted to go that route. I haven't torn apart an 01 or 02 model door actuator but I'm assuming what we show in this video will work for them as well by just replacing the motor.

Do you have any newer recommendations for a lift kit for a 98 4runner? I saw your older videos but I was wondering if your parts would change today

  • @TimmyTheToolman

    @TimmyTheToolman

    4 жыл бұрын

Not a whole lot has changed for the suspension for these rigs other than more options to set up long travel. The basic lifts seem to be with Bilstein shocks and OME springs. The higher end lifts will have shocks from ICON, King or Radflo with Eibach springs. The fanciest shocks will have external reservoirs. The more expensive lift kits also come with replacement upper control arms. You basically have to match the suspension set-up to how you plan on using the rig. That's at least what I suggest. Some guys will dump huge money into state of the art suspension just so they can mall crawl and look cool, and if that's what makes them happy, that's fine. It's their money. I'm a practical person when it comes to modding my rig. If I think I need the mod and will benefit from it, I'll do it. I don't do anything for looks other than putting stickers in my windows.

Ppl should be careful and keep their cutting as straight as possible when cutting/resealing the casing. Not sure exactly where i went wrong but mine wouldn't go back together quite as tight as it had been and because of that, the electronics only got a good enough contact to function if I pressed the case together in my hand. Had to end up buying a new unit anyway. Might have been better off with a vice. This video was still an amazing help.
