    I dont know if its just me, but saying a game is soulless really is a damning and negative thing to say. I feel that mindless is a much better term for fast paced, relatively silly shooting. Soulless, by definition, is quite the opposite of Doom. Doom is bright and colorful, fun and fast paced, which is pretty much the opposite of soulless. Battlefield 4's singleplayer is, soulless, but Doom certainly manages to be more than just a lost soul (huh huh). I can see that this looks phrased as almost negative, but I was just voicing a particular nitpick. The video ( as most of Worth A Buy's content ) was interesting and enjoyable, I guess that one thing just rubbed me the wrong way.

    Mack I must say I don't agree with your points. Doom wasn't a story driven experience because of hardware limitations, it was made to be a fast past action game. I still go back and play it today due to the fact it has aged so well. I don't play Doom 3 anymore because I find after a couple of hours it becomes a boring slog with slow combat and constant jump scares. The new Doom is a corridor shooter, and you don't have to ration your supplies and locate them around the labyrinthine maps of the Dooms of old. I think this new game tried to capture the evil dead style of dark humor that the older dooms had but went a bit far and turned into a comic book affair (even uses lines from the Doom comic).

  • @matthewstorr1042

    @matthewstorr1042

    But it isn't like the original dooms at all. Start a level of Doom1/2 and your likely to quickly come to a few branches in the path that wind around the level in different ways, and often you can grab keys and supplies in different orders. In the new doom its a line ---- room --- room --- room like all modern shooters. And the way ammo/health and combat works is a lot different.

    Mac seems to miss the point that Doom 3 was an anomaly in the series that was not well received. Doom fans have been crying out for a return to the gameplay of Doom 1 and 2. Don't get me wrong, I like Doom 3 because I like linear story shooters but Doom should never have become that.

    Hah, I enjoy the hell out of Doom 4 for the very reasons Mack doesn't like it. I want the badass fucking kill everything at high pace murder murder MAIM KILL FUCKING DIE DEMON SCUM FUCKASJDKASASDAS... Etc. I love the fact that there's barely any story in it, I just want to shoot the shit out of demons, just like I did back in 1995. I like that they brought back dodging projectiles like in the first Doom games. I think the weapon modification system works well. It's not in the way, you can surely finish the game without using any of the mods, but they still provide a sense of progression. While you're getting better at the game as a player, your weapons are also getting more powerful at the same time. While this happens you get harder enemies, bigger hordes of demons, eviler evil, etc. It's just fucking lovely. I also love the graphics and the soundtrack. The sound effects are great too. The weapons feel meaty as fuck and the demons sound like I imagine demons would sound. Personally I thought Doom 3 was a piece of shit. Slow paced, boring combat, a story that was as retarded as a straight-to-DVD sci-fi horror. It was amazingly beautiful but that was it. If you wanted an FPS with some depth back then you played Half-Life 2.

    +Simon Johansson That's kind of how I feel about racing games. I wish they would fuck off with all the ridiculous bullshit stories they throw in. Idc if it's something minor but like the latest need for speed game, I can't even believe a game like that was released. It's unbearable. But for fps games I do like the story driven games. Fear is probably my favorite fps, and for me that had the perfect amount of story I would want but wouldn't mind a bit more. Custom map editor and multiplayer is what is the most interesting to me about this doom game so far.

    "It's rewinding time and going back 20 years to the original." Mack that is a good thing. Half Life is a brilliant game, but Doom should not be the game that tries to replicate it. The new Doom is great, it's not supposed to be a thinking game just a fast paced FPS, which it is. BTW How the hell do glory kills ruin t the game? They are great fun to perform, but if you don't like them you don't have to use them so how they come in for criticism from you is little perplexing.

    I like you're reviews, but disagree with this review. It was refreshing to play a game where you don't have to wait 30 minutes to use your gun, or listen to dialogue you don't really care about. The combat had great flow and glory kills were great (I was worried it'd get old fast, but it never did.) And hell, the soundtrack was amazing!

    As someone who never got to experience the more simple, less story driven era of FPS, I'm glad that there is a new game that takes that simple approach. It's also interesting to see how the younger and older generations have such differing opinions on what this game should have been.

    My only issue with the new doom are the glory kills, over than that I love the new doom! It does everything that doom 3 failed to do in my opinion (I love doom 3 to death but it's not really a doom game). Doom 3 is a good half life cross over with doom but this new reboot is a glorious return to Doom's fantastic, fast paced, explosive combat!

    My preferred difficulty level is Ultra Violence. Nightmare has gotten too frustrating ever since they added target leading to the enemy AI, but that same addition made Ultra Violence more enjoyable for me because it used to be a bit too easy. This review was made before the AI was modified, and medium difficulty was a complete cakewalk. If you aren't in your forties with terrible reflexes and eyesight, you owe it to yourself to play this at a higher difficulty level.

    +ZLau13 But are the secrets relevant like in the old Doom or are they all just gimmicky things like finding little dolls that look like you? What secrets should include: -Guns you wouldn't unlock that early otherwise -Ammo and health (shouldn't been spread around the way it is and not dropped out of the exploding assholes of demons) -If they insist on having perks, these things should be hidden as well This would make the game a little more interesting. At least to me

    Actually, glory kill system and chainsaw is a brilliant idea - if you kill demons brutally - you can continue to kill demons brutally because they give health and ammo. It keeps pacing up and glory kills are fast to execute, so the flow isn't interrupted. As for upgrades, or "perks" as mac calls them ,they are to to empower you along with guns and while increasing the difficulty, actually give you a challenge and give a sense of progresion, that you started weak, just 100% badass, and at the end you're 10000% badass. iWeapon upgrades are good because they keep early weapons relevant to the end, unlike old doom there if you got rocket launcher or bfg, that was all you needed to play and go forward. well, to each his own, but i must say not every game must be half life ( coming from a huge half life fan) , because half life is half life and it's best at being half life and it's no use to copy it if you don't understand it properly ( like doom 3 did, which made for annoying first half of terrible horror part which didn't fit the doom franchise at all)...

You're making me dream of quake multiplayer days, rocket jumping, flying at 300 mph flames and sparks coming off my character, exponentially increasing in speed, breaking the sound barrier, switching to the rail gun, railing the enemy with the flag about to score a point, that announcer "HOLY SHIT!!!". Doom 3 was pretty controversial when it came out. I know a lot of people weren't happy with the direction that the series took. Instead of fighting scores of demons en masse, you only fought a few of them at a time. Personally, I liked Doom 3 and I would have been pleased had Doom continued in Doom 3s footsteps, but I'm just as pleased as this direction. That said, one correction Mack -- Doom 3 was released before Half Life 2. If anything Doom 3 influenced Half Life 2 instead of vice versa.

    What do you think about Brutal Doom?

  • @LemurFromTheId
    @LemurFromTheId8 жыл бұрын

    It's funny how you dismiss Doom as a "dumbed-down, moronic shooter" where you have to "disengage your brain" - and then you complain that you can't just mindlessly rocket everything in sight like you can in some other shooters. Sorry, in Doom you have to actually pay attention to your surroundings and use AOE weapons with care. Also, you didn't play on Nightmare, which *is* the highest you can select for your first playthrough. On Nightmare enemies don't come to you and wait for you to kill them; they just do everything they can to *finish you off*. You get health from them when you Glory Kill them, but not *nearly* enough for you to play recklessly. And while you can't be killed during a Glory Kill, executing it in the wrong place will leave you completely exposed (after which a single powerful hit can easily kill you), so you have to be smart about when you do it and when you don't, because Nightmare absolutely punishes you for your mistakes. It's tough, but it's also fair. You also didn't say anything about the chainsaw having limited uses. Against the biggest demons you can only use it once without having to re-fuel. And yeah, it replenishes more or less of your ammo - depending on the enemy type you use it against - which is half of it's purpose. But in Doom you're not meant to struggle against running out of ammo - the point of limited ammo is that it encourages you to alternate between different weapons, and with different weapons having very different properties (in particular with their upgrades) and different demons having different strengths and weaknesses, there's a complex dynamic where it's actually beneficial to think and plan which weapon to use in any given situation - while allowing personal perefences and playstyle. Doom isn't *nearly* as mindless as you seem to think. It's telling that when you "disengage your brain" while playing it, you enjoy it the most when you tone down the difficulty. Many, many others enjoy it the most while cranking the diffculty up and playing it with mindfulness.

And you can just refrain from meleeing if you want to. OK, while some valid points are made about the glory kills and the weapon wheel, drops etc. Some of them are necessary for one reason. Ultra-Nightmare you HAVE to use glory kills to get back health and ammo. And the weapon wheel is necessary on console because there's not really another way to do it on consoles. I personally play on a PS4. The drops have to be there in UN or you would not even stand a chance of making it. If you don't want the glory kills to be as noticeable you can turn off the blue and orange effect and just shoot everything.

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment, I really want to be challenged. So far doom on Ultra-nightmare is scratching my itch, I've started over several times now, one of these days I'm gonna make it. Wish me luck ;/.

    Man this video and his RE7 one are the reasons i ignore his videos. Like seriously the fact that he needs to bring up Half Life and how no one is doing a HL3 and Doom should not be Doom tells me i should not trust his opinion. Also calling Doom 2016 a mindless shooter really is a disservice to the game and shows a lack of knowledge on the game's combat design

    I'm perfectly happy with the game. I'm only on the fourth level and I am having the best time. This is Doom. It's exactly what I wanted out of a Doom game. I enjoyed Doom 3 and I'm appreciating the similar aesthetic but the gameplay is so fast paced and frantic, it takes me way back to my childhood. I am playing as you put it; a complete prick and it's an absolute blast. I can see myself replaying on a higher difficulty when I'm done and check out that survival mode.

    Bit confused how he says its basically 'Doom1. Sure I recognize some of the creatures but everything else is different. What I think would be amazing would be a faithful level by level remake of the original, the same maps, same weapons, just updated to modern graphics standards. To be able to play those old maps that we all knew so well but with modern graphics and sounds would be incredible. Also, if it's Doom 1, wheres the music?

    I've come back to this review two years later. I revisited Doom 3 again late 2017 early 2018 and I have to say that I'm glad Mack thinks Doom 3 was a step in the right direction. Since first playing Doom all them years ago, I've bought it three more times, played it start to finish on the hardest difficulty once every few years and I must admit, enjoyed it more this time round than any other. Doom 3 is a terrific step forward in Doom narative and is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. The lore, the voice acting and the scares are phenominal. I haven't reinstalled this Doom since completing it when it came out, and I can't see myself reinstalling it. It's a fantastic fun game don't get me wrong, but I don't think it will stand the test of time like Doom 3.

    Nice and honest review mack ! I also expected it to be more like doom3 but I am actually totally not disappointed with returning to the older style of doom. Maybe even happy, I can still play hl2 or doom3 if I want, a game like this hasn't been out in almost 20 years, but I also understand your disappointment. You are totally right about the console thing though.. in my opinion developpers should make a bigger difference in gameplay between console and pc. Can't wait for my new gpu to play this though

    +Alfred Stampe yeah I thought Doom 3 was a huge buzzkill. I can appreciate id trying to create a more "highbrow" game but when something dons the "DOOM" label I expect brainless challenging combat and room crawling. On the other hand I absolutely adore Dead Space. Sort of a double standard

I played all the old games and in those you have to do the same thing if you didn't want to get killed, i don't understand why you complaint about this so much. It seems to me you just don't want to like the game. You said "it's just a massive shoot fest", well guest what... that is DOOM since the very begining xD

    This is just a serious sam knock-off disguised as doom with bad modern gaming cliches. I mean for FFS unskippable pointless cutscenes where you look at stuff you turned on for 5 seconds or that near 30 second long segment where you're locked in a room even though you have a Helmet with a HUD so the transmission could just play on that. Oh and weapons are found only when the game decides you need them, no possiblities to find them early or anything to actually reward finding secrets. Classic Doom was maze-like levels with demons, this is just mind-numbing arenas.

    My thoughts exactly with Doom 3, and I am also on the same page with Doom1,2 quake and then Half life. The way you explained all those is spot on. Remember half life when you had to sneak past that giant tentacle weed? Make soo much sound and you got skewered. But back on Doom 3, thats where Doom should of headed, FPS horror survival. If I recall the pretense to doom 1, you were the last survivor of a marine squad. It just felt like Doom 3 did something with that pretense. So Doom(4?) just went back to mindless demon killing.

  • @noneofyourbusiness910

    I don't know why anyone would think that Doom needed to continue in the direction of Doom 3. Doom 3 wasn't a universally loved title. A lot of people hated it and even described it as this reviewer describes Doom 1: a moronic shooter. People said that Doom 3 was stuck in the past, that it was boring, repetitive, too dark, etc., etc. There were people saying that its gameplay was too much like the originals where all you do is go down a linear path, kill monsters, and collect keycards in order to move on. Only in Doom 3, you collected PDAs instead. So considering all the criticisms that were thrown at that game, I don't why anyone would think that it would have been wise for Id just to make a remake of Doom 3. Although, I do agree with the reviewer that they should have kept a few more elements from Doom 3 than they did and that they should have tried to make Doom 2016 more immersive. I don't think they should have gotten rid of reloading, nor should they have made the demons spew out health and ammo upon dying. And the armor and health pickups should have blended in with the environment like they did with Doom 3. Other than that, I think that Id actually did a pretty good job with this latest iteration of Doom and made the right choice by going more down the action route rather than the horror route because that's what really made the original Doom games so awesome: the hard, fast, brutal, and bloody action. This game is a lot of fun and I would recommend people to buy it.

    Thank god this is not like doom 3. If I want to play horror scripted games with very bad combat, I would like doom 3. But how crap that game was, its great news they are actually going back and making a game where combat is so fun, fast and complex, compared to doom 3 an half life 1.

    if they had the technology back then DOOM would prob have looked kinda like this. The problem was just that they were held back by the technology of the time so it had to be 2D instead of 3D. The tech just wasnt there yet at the time.
