I enjoyed the youtube video. I attended the Dontaku parade in past years and if it was not for your commentary, I think I would have had the same impression as before. It follows the oft Japanese pattern of events: bore people into submission. It seems that the purpose is more for the people in the dontaku parade than an attempt to entertain the people. None of the marching bands, although proficient on their instruments and proficient in the marching arts really entertained the crowd, it seems they were there for their own benefit, not the visitors. None of the colour guards in the marching bands were tossing their flags or even twirling them much and the choice of music could have been better. Compare with the All-Gifu Honor Green Band in the Rose Bowl Parade. I'm sure you know what I mean when I say "bore people into submission." It is a Japanese thing and too bad they do that for parades too.

It’s very different from other parades… it’s as we said,, a participatory event… not a showcase… and it was fun to see some many outdoors - mostly maskless and having fun
