A friend of mine and I saw Donovan in concert in Sacramento, CA (in 1971 or '72). As the concert went along some guy in the audience kept yelling "Do Mellow Yellow!" after every song. Finally, Donovan smiled and said "Well, I guess we'd better do this one" and launched into it.

My family used to play this frequently as I was a toddler, I haven't heard the song since, and yet I knew it nearly beat for beat. I remember fondly, the long winding summer roads, driving to my aunt's job as a mascot for children's parties... ah, it's something I hold fondly. The emotions from that time hurt me just right. I apologize for the wasting of time, just needed to express the pure emotion I feel.

Thanks for the lyrics...easier to sing along. BTW, the repeat is "Born-a high forever to fly," rather than "Wanna."
Me, eating saffron rice. "I think I'll listen to the song that mentions saffron." (listens to this) Haha, yes. I am amused.

It's hard to believe so many people still think this song was about getting high on banana's.Donovan said in an interview that the "electrical banana" mentioned in the song was a ladies vibrator that he saw in a magazine or newspaper. He said the mellow aspect of the song was to do with meditation which was the new in thing for him but really it could be anything.

I knew it! I thought I was being a perv, but I was sure electrical banana had to be a dildo... 60's seems the right age for that to come in! Oh the dirty mind ;)

Oh to be young and dumb again. It brings back memories of smoking banana peels and snorting nutmeg!
It may sound like a throwaway pop song at first listen, especially because of the lyrics and since it's been used so many times in commercials. But this is not a throwaway song, but a really damn good pop song with one hell of a melody and it has endured.

This song randomly gives me nostalgia. So good❤
Donovan Leach a true classic from a time long ago in a galaxy far away. I miss those days. I want out of this current dystopia. It does not look like it will improve.

@@Mikado8848 How so? Because it was standard in the British musical industry that 5 -year contracts were to be made with groups or soloists. It was to be from the band's inception until the marketing ended. There was a market saturation effect that ended at the 5-year mark with promotions, merchandising, record sales etc.. I don't know how it is today. This was then. George Martin made a comment to that effect. Regards
Donovan was genius. I like album Yellow Mellow and album Sunshine Superman. Talent and high style!
