My parents were not fans of the music I was listening to in the mid 1960's BUT when I watched this on TV and my mother listened too, she commented that "they guy can really sing - he has such a pretty voice".

Yes, "Atlantis" came out as a single in the spring of '69, and on lp in August in the US. On a warm spring day in the spring of '71, Donovan's subterranean chant wafts from an open third story window of Rose Hall on the Edinboro State College of Pennsylvania campus... timeless... "Where I wanna be"

Hey Jude topped the charts in September 1968, Atlantis did in July 1969 so this one came after, and yes, I agree too that this is influenced by Hey Jude, nonetheless, I believe that Donovan is a genius that shines with his own light :)

I don't see any similarities in the music, but it was Donovan that taught John and Paul guitar techniques in India that ended on the White Album as Blackbird, Julia, Mother Nature's Son and Dear Prudence. The influence was more in the other direction.

It had been in news stories that Donovan Sr. had rejected him from the time he was first born. The mother does not need to get the permission of the father to give the child the name "Donovan"; the father doesn't hold a copyright on the name. Donovan Jr. looks very much like Donovan Sr. did in his youth.

The continent of Atlantis was an island which lay before the great flood in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean. So great an area of land, that from her western shores those beautiful sailors journeyed to the South and the North Americas with ease, in their ships with painted sails. To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea miles.

Dressed in white and several white robed children (or that is what sticks in my mind) it was absolutely beautiful and the most memorable of performances. We saw him in San Antonio in 1971-2 in what was an absolutely beautiful and awesome performance. I would love to see him again.
