    Kane Aquino try to get this out there Who here listens to commentaries? Well I did possibly the only one but the director said its like a love story that Donnie saved Gretchen. So Donnie took the jet engine back to the primary universe, instead of saving him self before it fell he accept the death and with ensured safety of humanity. Even though frank was the hero of the film. And Donnie was just there to be this ultimate sacrifice for the safety of mankind.

    First time I watched this movie it was a rental of the theatrical release. And when it was over I immediately watched it a second time. I didn't fully grasp the movie the first time through but I was so transfixed by the story telling and coming of age tones that I had to figure it out. After the 2nd viewing I had a much better idea and upon the 3rd viewing I pretty much had a grasp on it. When I saw the directors cut I actually kind of resented the page turning sequences that attempt to better explain the mystery of the film. I really enjoyed figuring it out on my own, and felt that the literal 'writing on the wall' explanation detracted from the overall experience. Great review as always, but I think it's funny that the thing I liked most about this movie are what you liked least, yet we both still consider it to be an amazing film.

    Call me crazy but I've always felt that Donnie Darko and American Beauty felt like they took place in the same world. Does anyone else get that feeling? The tone and mood are so similar. The way I took is that it was Donnie's fate to die, but he moved and so survived the jet engine. That's what caused the tangent universe, but the point of tangentiation is inherently unstable and that's what was causing the time vortex that would collapse the two universes. There was only one way to plug it. And yes, if you've seen the movie that all made perfect sense, it's that kind of movie.

    Not really. An unexplainable event, or object seeming just appearing is what causes a tangent universe, described in The Philosophy of Time Travel. The jet engine was unexplainable as to how it got to where it did and if him living is what caused the tangent universe, Frank the bunny wouldn’t have dragged him out and saved him. He would’ve just left him there to die so the tangent universe doesn’t get created in the first place.

  • @EmeraldBayMovies

    @EmeraldBayMovies

    4 жыл бұрын

    That doesn't make sense though. The only reason Donnie got out of bed was because Frank lured him outside, which means he was already in a tangent universe before the jet engine fell into his bed. The tangent was basically caused by a random "glitch" in the universe, which created a duplicate jet engine. The whole premise rests on the concept that we live in a simulated reality, created by some kind of higher being(s), and as with any computer simulation sometimes errors occur. In the case of this movie, two identical objects cannot exist in the same reality for extended periods of time without breaking the laws of the simulation and causing it to "crash", similar to how a game will crash if it can't find the reference ID for a certain object or something along those lines.

    This is a film that for me personally I think you shouldn't research. I watched it the first time and absolutely loved it, it was one of my favorite movies ever, despite not knowing specifically what it is that Donnie does at the film's climax. Upon that first viewing I absorbed the essence of the film, the essence of the characters and, I thought, the essence of what Donnie does. I soon turned my friend onto it and he went to watch it but watched the director's cut rather than the theatrical which I had watched. So when I talked to him about it he told me all this stuff about DOnnie having superpowers and how he saved the universe from exploding or something like that when he does whatever it is he does at the climax, and it completely ruined the film for me. The way I understood it from my first viewing was that he found out about what I saw as a wormhole that created a time loop and he decided that he would rather save the lives of his family and his girlfriend and Frank than save his own life, so he sends his consciousness back through the portal and makes himself stay in bed on the night that the jet engine falls, and in doing so deprives himself from the greatest month of his life in order to save those he loves, which is why he's laughing in his bed at the end, and looking at it that way makes the final scene where his girlfriend rides past his house where he's dead one of the saddest, most touching scenes I will ever see in any movie, and It honestly made the movie one of my all-time favorites, but upon hearing about the director-supported theories and websites that explain how it really wasn't a sacrifice because the whole universe was gonna collapse or something just robs the movie of its touching ending and turns it into some shitty superhero movie ending that doesn't understand that making the stakes larger does not make the audience feel more tense over them and really dropped the movie from "oh my god Donnie Darko might be my favorite movie ever" to "Oh yeah Donnie Darko is really good." And this really underscores two major issues I have with people's attitudes toward film. First is an over-reliance on exposition, every single filmgoer these days could use a good David Lynch film to make them appreciate how truly needless exposition or even an understanding of what's happening in order for a film to be good. Donnie Darko is one of the few examples where the studios got it right when they were forcing RIchard Kelly to cut, because it works so much better as a film without exposition that each viewer gets to have their own interpretation of. The second issue is with directors or studios editing films after they've already been released or releasing director's cuts or even telling people how to view a film. I truly believe that only two post-release edits have ever done good, the first is 2001, and Kubrick got to it within a week of its limited release, so barely anyone had even seen it at that point, and Blade Runner, which was only better because it got rid of the voice over that the studio insisted upon and didn't change much else. But in general I think that editing a film post-release is betraying the artwork. In my mind a piece of art is not an extension of the artist, I believe that once art is released to the public that the artist can of course profit from it, but that the voice or message of the art is its own, it is not subject to change by anyone, not even the artist. So if a novel is released and it accidentally implies unintended themes I believe that those are the themes it has, the author has no right to change the book in any way because it is a piece of art with its own independent voice, and I apply that same principle to film, once Donnie Darko was released it was released, its messages and themes were given to the public, but Richard Kelly felt compelled to release a new cut and to try to explain to people what the film is about when that's not how film works, a film is its own explanation and should not be given an explanation by the director because that just limits people's ability to impose their ideas upon it, which again hurts the film. The same thing happened with Apocalypse Now.

    Spot on man. A work of art is something that forces you to think and engages your imagination. Too much exposition just kills that engagement. Also the theatrical version is just a better movie for exactly the reasons you explained.

I re-watched the film as a way of comforting myself, even though it was a film he introduced to me. I feel it's because the character Donnie has to live with the same idea of having little friends due to his schizophrenia. I had lost him due to depression. Also once I figured out the true meaning it made me understand that you have to make sacrifices in order to succeeded in life. My friend leaving me was a form of a small sacrifice and it changed my life in the best way possible. It's a film that ill watch each year without fail. A true masterful film once you understand it.

    He's literally only made 3 movies. Scorsese's first 3 were Look who's knocking at my door, Boxcar Bertha, and Mean Streets. And honestly, Donnie Darko is better than all three of those, so we'll see if he's got more in him.

  • @TPCOUTO13

    @TPCOUTO13

    this is a stupid uninformed comparison... Who's knocking at my door was a NYU film pretty much a student film(on steroids)but because Scorsese shorts were so good the university give him a little bit of more money to make it and run in a few film festivals where he caught the eye of some people.. Boxcar Bertha was another not ''serious'' film,it was a B movie that was produced by Roger Corman and Scorsese only did it to really gain experience as a filmmaker Mean Streets,Alice Doesn´t Live Here Anymore and Taxi Driver are his first three movies and I find them in their own way all fantastic. And don´t forget also the factor of time-Scorsese made the jump from a NYU student(1967) to a Palm D'or winner(1976) in 9 years... In the same amount of time Richard Kelly made a cult film and nothing else of relevant...

  • @iansmart4158

    @iansmart4158

    7 жыл бұрын

    To Say I'm uninformed is kind of crazy. I know all of what you just said and I still stick by what I've said. Donnie Darko was made before Richard Kelly was 25. An inexperienced youth who was capable of making a major motion picture. His out of the gate ability to make something so singular and impressive is akin to someone like PT Anderson having Hard Eight be his first film. I'm not saying Kelly is Better than Scorsese (Scorsese is the GOAT) but I'm saying that Richard has shown an affinity for visuals in a way Scorsese had to build to. Lets also not underestimate the opportunities of each era also. Scorsese had B movies that he could make, smaller films that could get wide releases and so forth. Kelly came of age in a time where smaller films weren't getting financed in the same way therefore less opportunities. Also, to say that something is a "B movie" and therefore should be taken less seriously is seriously wrong. Do you know how many GREAT New Hollywood directors made great B movies. They got released and had the same amount of exposure as any other. Mean Streets is a classic but I do think Darko is better that's all. Haven't seen Alice yet and Taxi driver is a masterpiece (much better than anything Kelly has done) but I'm talking about the first 3. Kelly may have that in him but like I've said he's only made 3 movies. It took Joe Swanberg 15 feautres before he made the AMAZING Drinking buddies. It takes time with ppl, i'm not discrediting anything, but Kelly obviously has talent and can do something great with it. He's not dead and we haven't seen all he's capable of. So, I tend to hold out hope for the guy. ALSO, i think we underestimate how hard it is to get funding for any kind of movie, and the fact that Kelly likes to make these weirdly structured or concepted movies and none of them made a lot of money definitely has an effect on how he's gonna get the next job. Kelly doesn't have a Roger Corman in the same way Scorsese did.

  • @TPCOUTO13

    @TPCOUTO13

    I just felt that your comparison with Scorsese was pointless because as you say later in your comment their conditions to breaktout were different. Donnie Darko costed 4.5M\Soutland Tales 17M and The Box the same Who is knocking at my door costed 75.000 and Boxcar Bertha half a million(and it was pretty much a sequel so reduced creativity liberty) This whole argument boils down to your comparison being unfair Richard Kelly got his break and then just failed to establish himself as a filmmaker... can he still make great films ? ofc,he´s still 42(Bresson and Haneke started making their films int their 40s) ''Do you know how many GREAT New Hollywood directors made great B movies''-This question doesn´t make much sense after I pointed out first that Boxcar Bertha,a B movie, was directed by Scorsese,one of the leaders of New Hollywood...and Of course B movies are extremely influentional and important in the carreirs of big names and some ''B'' movies are actually great movies but it is almost a grain in a desert. B movies are normally dumb,always low budget and therefore poorly executed and made with the only intent to profit...

    Here’s my theory (I watched the film for the first time just a few minutes ago): The jet engine that fell on his room at the beginning of the film is from the plane that Donnie’s mom and sister are on at the end of the film. That’s why there was no plane that the engine came from at the beginning. The engine travelled through time. At the beginning of the film, Frank saved Donnie’s life by diverting him into a tangent, alternate universe (where he sleepwalks to the golf course and escapes the engine), but since Donnie kills Frank at the end of that universe, Frank is not alive to divert Donnie to the alternate universe and prevent him from getting killed by the engine, meaning Donnie does not sleepwalk to the golf course and ends up getting killed by the engine.

    Well in the Directors Cut they add a lot of snippets from the fictional book "The Philosophy of Time Travel". With these snippets inserted into movie it helps guide the viewer into what is happening in the movie. This kinda ruins the "WTF just happened" moment that comes from first time viewers. I still had that but I could only imagine how much more the ending would've confused me if those snippets weren't in their. There are also added scenes which are not necessarily bad and some edits to the cgi. Some scene changes kinda frustrated me like (If you don't want to know about this certain part of the movie don't read the next three lines) how they edited out the boos and hisses from the fat asian girl's performance in the talent show. I could still tell her performance was bad and that she was unloved but it would've made more sense if it was kept as Donnie goes and tells her sometime afterwards that she will be alright and accepted. It just would've strengthened her being not accepted within society. There was also some music changes in certain parts of the movie. Many fans of the original thought certain parts of the original score were superior to the director's cut. So that's it pretty much. I just wanted to say though that I still haven't watched the original cut as that's hard to find, but it's just frustrating that I couldn't watch the version everyone else saw fifteen years and be completely confused by it. That's just my two cents :)

    This is a fantastic reviews/summary of what is also one of MY favorite films. I remember watching it then visiting their WEBSITE which was very interactive, and that filled in a ton of the plot gaps that most will have after the initial viewing. But I did that BECAUSE the film is so well made, as you said MEZMORIZING, hypnotic, beautiful. I have still not seen the "director's cut" but I can imagine the best thing for new audiences to do is watch this theatrical re-release (HOORAY!But also dammit, I didn't hear about that when it happened!) and then watch a second time the director's cut. ...and if the brain is still itchy for more explanations then you've got a TON of youtubers who have done detailed analysis out of love for this perfect movie. Yes, I will call it that even after all these years... something about how it captured Teen Angst in combination with a SciFi/Fantasy world that stays true to its "rules". Not many films of either genre succeed start to finish. Donnie Darko definitely does!

    I love the movie, and then I read the book that came out to accompany it, where they have the script as well as interviews with the authors and cast and it was quite shocking to me to see how much of the stuff that I found deep and relatable was just an accidental byproduct of a creative process that was shallow and superficial compared to what I read into it. It really left an impression, how someone can create something really fascinating without noticing or understanding what they're doing. I now feel like art happens in the mind of the reader as much as in the mind of the author, and there can be an incredibly huge disconnect between both.

    Great review. Much like Chris I saw this movie many years back and loved it. Mesmerised all the way through. I then went on to buy the directors cut so I could analyse all the time travel stuff to give the film more meaning. That was fine and I put the film down. Years later watching the film again, I have to say, it isn't the time travel theory stuff that holds up for me. It's the themes of death, mystery, time, family, sacrifice. Those, along with the great acting, direction and soundtrack is what makes it great for me. I don't actually need it explained all over again. My point is, the film is amazing without all the extra explanation.

    donnie didn't cause the tangent universe to form. It was simply an anomaly where 2 objects (in this case the jet engine) existed which created a tangent universe. Donnie was then chosen to fix it. Frank needed to save donnie so donnie could end up saving the universe and putting the jet engine back into the universe it came from. In the end donnie wakes up and realises that he no longer fears dying alone and is content. Therefore instead of leaving his bed he chooses to die knowingly.

    I saw this movie when I was super young. Cannot recall exactly, but probably around 10. My dad was a movie geek and he got me to watch too scary movies way too early. He told me straight up that Donnie was mentally ill, as if that was supposed to explain the whole movie. It took me years to be able to watch it properly without being scared shitless, and to understand it was a lot deeper than my dad thought it was. I love this movie. And it makes me happy that Gyllenhaal still considers this his favorite movie he's done. Thanks for another great review, Chris.

    I really enjoyed Donnie Darko and had not that much understanding issues. (maybe because I interpreted it in a different way ^^). Ihad to rewatch it once though but I fell in love with it right away. The music ist fantastic and the atmosphere is incredibly eerie.

    Frank turning to Donnie in the theater, when Donnie asks about the wound, and he replies "I'm so sorry" was the first shred of information I used to start piecing the film together on my first few viewings. Such a great film. Director's Cut is shite though.

    It's when a universe is created that is split off from the original universe. A tangent universe mirrors the original universe but it is unstable and can collapse at any time.

    It's my all time favourite movie. I held a 45min presentation on it and it's stylistic devices and the "introduction sequence" (the one that introduces all the characters in the school) in senior art class, and the teacher had to stop me because I could just go on and on about it. The first time I watched it, I IMMEDIATELY rewatched it the first night, and watched it more than 10 times within that week. At one point I could just recite the entire movie. It's so underrated.

    It was a cold mid-winter evening, and Chris Stuckmann had just gotten home after watching another dreadful horror remake. He opened the door to his house and ventured in only to find his wife Sam, and John Flickinger, waiting for him, siting at the dining room table, and basked in dim lighting. Confused, Chris asked, “Hey John, Sam what’s going on?” His wife silently moved across the room, grabbed a small metal container and set it before Chris. He sat down. Sweat streamed across his pale white forehead for he knew that his secret had been uncovered. Then Sam, in a cool detached voice said, “Open it.” Chris, trying to bide his time turned to John, exclaiming, “You know what we should do? Go to Best Buy! I hear they have new 5k TVs now; just think about that amazing quality c’mon lets go!” John looked at Chris, his penetrating gaze seeing right through Stuckmann’s ruse. “Chris, open the box.” Chris was really frightened now. Pools of sweat soaked through his vintage wicker man T-Shirt, as his breathing grew heavy. He abruptly stood up and shouted, “You two don’t know anything! This is nothing! It’s nothing!” He picked up the container and flung it across the room. “Stop trying to run, you’ll never escape.” Said the pair in unison. With cold expressionless faces John and Sam began to slowly approach Chris. Chris, scared out of his mind turned tail and ran toward his bedroom slamming the door behind him. He laid sideways with his body against the door, in the fetal position. John and Sam were violently pounding on the door shouting, “Open the box! Open the box! Open the box!” Chris closed his eyes; he just wanted to get away. But after a few seconds he couldn’t take it anymore, he screamed at the top of his lungs, “STOP, STOP PLEASE I CAN’T IT ANYMORE EVEN IF I WANTED TO OPEN IT ITS NOT IN HERE!” The house fell silent. Slowly, Chris opened his eyes. The box was right in front of him. His trembling hands gripped the lid of the container as he slowly opened it to reveal a DVD copy of Chan-Wook Park’s The Handmaiden. Review the fucking Handmaiden Chris.

    If you love how Donnie Darko messes with the linear narrative as well as your head for years to follow, I reckon you'll absolutely love Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway from David Lynch as well. You should also check out some Tarkovsky classics. His best films are pretty much unique in the history of cinema.
