I have two BLM Burros that have been with me for 3 months. The one is five years old and she is extremely friendly and easy to train. My other burro is nine years old and she is sometimes great but other times very nervous. I can sometimes halter her but other days it's a struggle. I only use positive reinforcement and have watched many donkey training videos. Will it get better with consistency over time?

Hi, in your experience how long can it take to work on gaining their trust? I have a 3 year old rescue that I have been working with. He will get within an arm's length to get the treat and will then back off. He's starting to follow me around but likes to keep a distance of about 5 ft.

That depends on how much you are working with him and how he was previously handled .. if he was abused it could take months or even a year. If he’s just unhandled 2 weeks to a month. It varies a lot depending on the individual and your time/skill.

I just got my first burros - mom (5yrs) and daughter (2yrs) who have never been separated. We have made some progress in a week - they are coming around us, but to use your words, they are "treat mugging" us. I know it is our fault... as we want them to come close to us. They barely tolerate getting a "pet" from us, and if the treats stop they leave. The BLM trainer said we need to get a halter on the baby (we did that by feeding her treats thru the halter and slipping it on - so sneaky.. she was peeved for a day or two). The trainer said to tie her to a post and separate mom from baby since they are codependent. I do not know if I like the harshness of that plan... but the daughter still tries to nurse a few times a day. Would that give them both anxiety? How long before I can get them to take hikes with me? Should I put a lead-rope/drag-line on them??

If you want to use treats you’ve got to do it using positive reinforcement training methods. My level 1 course book walks you through how to do it. Yes tying up like that will cause anxiety. I would train them to stand tied but within site of each other. I’d use positive reinforcement methods for that too so it starts to be a good thing! Not something that is upsetting. You might want to join my donkey training group on patreon. I just started training a major treat mugger and I’m posting his progress and videos there.. But definitely get my level 1 course and get them started on safe training they enjoy. It covers treat manners, targeting games for haltering… grooming, leading and standing tied.
