@@bazzfromthebackground3696 They released a Metroid game last year tho.... I thought Dread was well received... I mean I played it myself too and it has the same problem every Metroid game has. I always enjoy Metroid games for a few hours and then give up, I never beat them lol.

Retro Studios has amazing attention to detail, like their design philosophy is pretty much "if a platform is floating in the air, it has to be floating for a reason." Every single platform in Returns and Tropical Freeze is either always sticking out from something in the background or has a justification for floating. Both of these games are some of the best platformers I have ever played, and I find myself coming back to them on occasion.

Even the ones that have no reason for floating... have a reason for floating. The final world has platforms with runes on them that make them float.

Videos like this are why you’re not just my favourite gaming KZreadr but my favourite KZreadr period. The way you balance humour with your passion is so perfect and precise that it can’t help but bring me and others joy. @@aidensnow5017 Metroid Prime 4 was being developed by Bandai Namco Studios. This effort was entirely scrapped and development was moved and restarted under Retro Studios in 2019. They have been working on it now for about 4 years.

DK Frozen Ape's OST goes so hard that David Wise basically wrote 3 songs for each individual level. It is impossible to appreciate all of the work he put in, but it is a magical experience every time.

I hope we're never running out of Donkey Kong Games just for these videos

@@Vivi_9 It's an electromechanical keyboard instrument. Pressing keys causes hammers to strike strings against an anvil (a metal bar). Most people are surprised to find out it's a keyboard, as it sounds kinda guitar-y. Similar to a guitar, it uses pickups to turn the vibration of the strings into an electric signal, which then goes through an amp.

Actually same, I got chill from noticing the giraffes to the music... It's such an innocent warm (no pun intended) moment.

Tropical Freeze was included in one of Dunkey's "Best of" videos - I think it was 2019 - and his blurb about it in that video was enough to convince me to buy it for the Switch. What a sublime experience all around. Especially happy to see Grasslands Groove get singled out too (at 4:09) - that level (and music) has stuck with me since my first play through of it.

Music in this game was so good, gotta mention the Big top bop boss music.... shit is soooo good. First time I got to it I kept dying to the boss on purpose so I could get further into the song and listen to it, shit was awesome.

That labor of love. That extra detail. Stage gimmicks and aesthetics that aren't constantly recycled. I could feel the effort they put into it.

The way you talk about games makes me happy.

Tropical Freeze was also co-developed by Monster Games. My dad actually worked on this game as one of the many digital artists. He says he designed some of the trees in the early levels as well as some of the vegetation in the water levels.

"New Donkey Kong: Farm Simulation JRPG" jk

Still my favorite OST from any video game ever, and I'll be surprised if it gets beaten out. There's a level called Irate Eight where you're on land for less than 10 seconds before jumping into the water, and Wise put a four and a half minute song to play during that section. The boss themes are incredible, the Rocket Barrel motif is always remixed in a distinctive and transformative way, and everytime a piece of a track from an earlier DKC game is used I get chills. Every single level in this game should be in an art museum, everything is so finely crafted it's absolutely criminal that it's been almost 9 years since any other form of Donkey Kong media. I love Returns as well, but Tropical Freeze holds a very special place in my heart and I will never stop wishing for another Donkey Kong game. Until next December, Dunkey Kong. 🦍🍌

$50, incredible. But seriously, games with great music always have high attention to detail and replayability. It's a sure sign the entire studio went all out and put love into their craft. @@TriforceWisdom64 also the first watch dogs, it has very atmospheric music that even loops itself and blends with the gameplay, like if you stay on a car chase for very long the car chase soundtrack ( wich is amazing and electric) will continue with you throughout! I love that. The police chase the default theme and especially the lucky Quinn theme wich is very scary are amazing songs that makes me love that game.

@@MegaMicah12 i played WD for about 3 years, it is a very atmospheric game and it has a very good concept and the story and characters were amazing and fun, it's just the execution, the gameplay, i mean i like driving and this is a Driver 4 of sorts but it's made by Ubisoft and the budget went into making this game seems good, not into it actually being good. As a matter of fact they did watch dogs within watch dogs, there's a minigame called Alone and it is phenomenal, i wish that That was watch dogs it works so much better, you only have about 2 guns and you have no ammo for neither and it takes a lot to kill the robots there and they are cameras and it's scary since you're being hunted throughout Chicago, the problem is that they don't expand beyond that, but if the main game was focused on that idea it could be amazing. I hope one day someone makes a spiritual sucessor to Watch dogs using Alone as a basis.

The fact that he announced "Donkey Kong December" exactly one year ago and (imo) he took one whole year to make these videos with his own pace and time to give us 6 videos that are an entire DOCUMENTARY of 30 minutes about the story, art and influence of Donkey Kong... You really got to love this man's perseverance and love for what he loves. I think this is a gift for his real true fans. Thank you Dunkey

Tropical Freeze was my kid's first DK game, and what a frustrating game it was, but they loved it. Being 8 or 9 and overcoming those harder levels makes you feel great. Reminds me of the old school NES days of hard games.

Dunkey is truly ahead of the curve, reviewing a game due to come out in just a few short months.

This video makes you actually feel like a... videogamedunkey being so sad about the current state of gaming and this mostly loveless industry while still clinging to having hope from the indie scene and Nintendo... And... It feels like ME! HE is ME. And I am YOU! 8O

I think you have the game wrong. This is actually the video game "Donkey Kong Throws an Ape". And goes for 50 dollars.

Awesome video, Dunk! This Donkey Kong December has been nothing but hit videos!

I think it's fine that we won't see another Donkey Kong game for a while (unless Nintendo is secretly working on a new 3D Donkey Kong game for the end of the Switch!). Nintendo is known to juggle their franchises while introducing new ones, except for the main ones like Mario and Zelda. I've been loving the Switch ports of Wii-U games (like Tropical Freeze!) that even give us small pieces of new content, as I never had a Wii-U. But through the Switch, we also got a 3D open-world Kirby game, Luigi's Mansion 3, a new home console Animal Crossing game, a new Pokemon Snap game, not to mention Metroid Dread and the upcoming Metroid Prime 4.

These past 2 Donkey Kong Decembers have been some of your greatest kongtent to date and I have to say that I'm Glad I was here to witness them live. Keep putting 300% into your future videos Dunkey, we love them all. ps Can't wait to see which game wins game of the year this year, and more importantly cant wait to see how you announce it. Makes me laugh more and more every year

I keep getting the feeling Dunkey will somehow be involved in the next DK game.

I have never played a single Donkey Kong game in my entire life, but Dunkey's enthusiasm for the series has really made me want to try it at least once. Seriously, this was an amazing set of videos sir. Every week, I was captivated even though, as mentioned, I have never played any of these games before. Bravo Dunkey, bravo...

Please do. Even the hardest, most frustrating DK game is a very worthwhile experience. And the easiest DK games are not so easy they're boring, but so chill they're therapeutic.

1:35 This perfectly sums up my first playthrough of Tropical Freeze on Wii U, I just rushed through it instead of giving it the attention it deserved. I ended up buying it on Switch mainly out of guilt tripping myself.

@@user-fe8gx3ie5v why not? If you love a game and want to experience it on a different console maybe with a couple added features, I don't see anything wrong with it. Better giving money to an well crafted game twice than another EA or Assassin creed game.

When it comes to the 2010s its only real non indie competition is the Rayman ubiart duology.

Glad that the DKD finale(for now) gave the crazy flute guy from TGA some love, guy had us killing ourselves laughing while we watched

Game looks gorgeous. Always love the vibrant tropical setting. And sounds great. For that one song, it's like they had a bet as to how many instruments they could fit in to it.

The Metroid Prime music in the first half was a blast of nostalgia

Oh man you're on point about the music of DK Tropical Freeze! I remember when I played through one of the last levels of World 2, the one in which DK goes through several windmills and ziplines through moutain tops. When I played it during the zipline parts, the music synced perfectly as DK slid on the vines, spinning around to make the bells hanging near the zipline ring to break obstacles. It was magical, as if the blowing wind was conjuring the music and twirling around the bells.

Played through the whole thing with my mom, she had an absolute blast. Something I'll remember forever

I had the biggest smile on my face listening to how much dunkey loves the music in this game. That smile faded once I was reminded of the fact that Donkey Kong is dead 😢

Never played a Donkey Kong game before but Dunkey convinced me to get this cause this looks fun as hell.

It's my favourite platformer ever. You're in for a HELL of a time bud. 8 years later I'm still listening to the soundtrack almost weekly and doing a replay at least once a year. It's THAT good

Go ahead, paly them! I suggest you start with the country trilogy, when it comes to difficulty spike i suggest starting with dkc3, then 2 then finally 1

Tropical Freeze is one of the best 2D platformers out there, and you nailed it. :)

Dunkle Dunkey has done it again. He is the only video game reviewer I will ever listen to talk about donkey Kong.

man i wish dunkey had made a video on donkey kong country returns, its probably my favourite donkey kong game

It's incredibly underrated and forgotten. Retro Studios used it as stepping stone for their masterpiece Tropical Freeze and never looked back. The Switch version should've included both!
