The soundtrack is obviously much more diverse than that of the first game, but there is a really cool detail that a lot of people seem to miss: there are death jingles for every level song as opposed to a single one for all deaths, and the same is true of level clear jingles, which not only match the level music, but there is also a unique one for Diddie and Dixie.

In my opinion, this is the best 2D platformer ever created. The level design is top notch, the music is my 2nd favorite OST ever, and the visuals still look really good. Sonic 2 may have a special place in my heart, but this game is perfect in about everyway.

While I do love Sonic 2 (it’s probably my favorite mobile game), I think DKC2 is actually superior to most of the classic Sonic games, especially 1 and CD, and on par with Super Mario World.

Angel Molina I think it's leaps and bounds better than Mario World. In my opinion, Super Metroid is its biggest competitor for best 16 bit platformer. I do agree that this game is better than most of the Classic games. I actually prefer it over 3K. It's such a wonderful game filled with passion.

Paper Luigi there are certainly things it does better than Mario World like more varied music, more interesting themes for its levels and worlds, and more variety. I haven’t played Super Metroid but from what I’ve played I can see where you’re coming from. Only thing I don’t like it I’m not too fond of how wall jumping is handled there control-wise, but this may just be after years of being spoiled by games with simpler wall-jumping. Aside from that I couldn’t find any serious issues and had a blast with it. Plan to finish it eventually.

A masterpiece. That's all I can say. A true platforming *masterpiece* in my eyes, one of my favorite games as a kid, and even today, I think I love this game even more, as my understanding of what makes good game design develops. Tight controls, nice visuals, epic bosses, a _LEGENDARY_ soundtrack, and a whole heaping of personality, I daresay Diddy's Kong Quest is one of the most *perfect* games I've ever played, one of the greatest games of the 90s, that's right, I hold in the same regard as *EarthBound!* Yep, I can't give a game much more praise than that!

Majority of the fanbase (including myself) think this is the best of the trilogy, but there's a very small few that like the original more, and from the arguments I've heard it's just because of some really petty stuff like how Donkey Kong isn't playable (which doesn't affect the gameplay one bit) or how that they grew up with the original first, which is stupid because I grew up playing the original first and still prefer DKC2 over it.

I agree. DKC2 has only one competition and that's Tropical Freeze imo. DKC2 will always be my personal favourite from my childhood (along OoT) and is as good as it could get back then, but Tropical Freeze takes it to a whole new level imo. Anyway, I love all 5 Country games and think they are the best 2D JNRs there are.

@@implantgames the original game was, felt & looked so much more realistic! Not everything is about gameplay lol. On that note, DKC1 didn't have so many gimmicky & cartoony enemies and gameplay/stage gimmicks. The biggest gimmicks basically were the barrels and secret rooms, and the buddies you actually turn into, and the buddies' bonus life things when you get 3 golden things of them was awesome!! It was fun & I could fairly easily get +8 lives with Winky and the ostrich! They took out the ostrich, the life bonus rounds, and the evil oragutans! Like really? Why? Also, imo the 2nd game is the worst one because it shit all over the realism the 1st game relayed & introduced Dixie Kong, and it was a bit too difficult (especially K. Rool & the extra crap), and it was overall too piratey, cartoony, and gimmicky. The 3rd one at least had balanced difficulty, the best graphics & gameplay, and a cool & fun new overworld that was borderline open world! (but not annoyingly too open world)

I love how you were actually able to pinpoint flaws in the game, so often people call this game perfection, but I remember upon first playing it just how annoyed I was with it at parts... And since you're playing it for the first time with a good grasp on game design basics, you were able to communicate well just how successful the game was at every step. Great review, great game! I may prefer the first, and even the third, but I absolutely adore every title in this series.

As someone who has played this game as a kid, let me assure you that the issue with checkpoints mentioned in your video was not an issue back then. Having to repeatedly beat hard challenges was an integral part of the NES/SNES experience, and I probably wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Also interesting how you were frustrated by Squawks’s difficult controls (and “absolutely hated” the race course). For me, Squawks’s levels were some of the most exciting and memorable parts of the game. The game just wouldn’t be the same without this difficulty spike.

Exactly. He compared this games difficulty to Limbo. This comparison proves to me he doesn't quite understand how to play platformers. And that he needed "lots of lives" on the first, easier, game. Games were meant to be played over and over again until you master it. Ghosts and Goblins, Mega Man, even Mario Bros. I just don't feel that an increase of difficulty should be viewed as a negative thing.

I agree, what fun is one shotting 75% of the levels and maybe needing 2-3 lives for the other 25%? Or just brute forcing a section because you restart at it every time. There are no stakes. You complete the game in 10 hours and then are done with it.

I love this game! As nostalgic as I am for the original (I didn’t even get to play this one until 2013), I can admit that this game is an improvement. While I can see where you’re coming from about completion, I do enjoy completing the game a lot since, like you said, a lot of the bonus rooms and DK Coins are hinted at. And for the ones that aren’t, you can buy hints from Cranky to help you find some of them (though I don’t know if you were aware of this or were able to take advantage of this since you have the Super Famicom versions). Always appreciate the hard work you put into these reviews. Look forward to seeing you cover the rest of the series!

I remember back in the day being impressed with the music that came out of these games and thinking "How did they do that?". Many years later a lot more information has come out into the behind the scenes of how these classics were made and the tricks used to make everything in the consoles go past what was possible. My younger brother played these games via the GBA (or at least the first one, not sure if the rest were ported too and I am currently too lazy to look) but he didn't understand the amazement I had playing them when they first came out, how they looked and sounded like nothing else in the 16 bit era.

I love the music, the improved boss fights, and the stiff challenge. Screech's Sprint was the best. It reminded me of the Rat Race from Battletoads. I feel like they went a bit overboard with the forced animal buddy segments, though. These guys are fine in small doses, but I should never feel like I'm playing a Squawks the Parrot Country game with his two ape sidekicks, you know? This game also stared the Rare tradition of "gating" content (the Lost World levels) behind pointless collectables. I hate this kind of scavenger hunt nonsense and it really ruined most of their N64-era platformers for me. Nothing but a cheap trick to sell more strategy guides.

Really dig these two DKC videos. I can't wait for DKC3 personally my favourite of the trillogy. DKC3 overall feels more chill to play than the dark edgy constant threats within enemy turf that are in DKC2. As a kid I used to love DKC1 but as time went on I lost interest in that game to the point that with digital re-releases I only bought DKC2 and DKC3 or better gameplay, graphics. Of course the music in all 3 games is super awesome to listen to. With DKC3 I love it's more atmosphere style music, also im a sucker for mountain and ice levels.

Courious, all the down points you mention are the reason I love this game. Using Squaks is my favorite part, Animal Antincs and Screech's Sprint are my favorite levels not only in the series but in gaming, how the game slow down the pace on purpose to let you rest and take a break while still playing and over all the difficulty, is exactly in the soft point where I can still feel a challenge and not be desappointed. I return to the game every one-two years to play it and still feels timeless like super metroid. (and obviously all the great things that accomplish like the music and game desing)

DKC2 (like the other games in the trilogy) has what I call "musical instrument" design. When you first play, it's tricky. However, everything is designed in such a rhythmic way that, once you build your skill, you can absolutely blast through the levels while still having a ton of fun. You may complain about how tough everything can be at first, but you'll be zooming through on repeat playthroughs. Checkpoints won't even register for you anymore.

I still go back and play this game to this day; it's easily my favorite 2D platformer of all time. I have to say, even though Squawks and Squitter are frustrating and slow at first, imo levels like Bramble Scramble and Web Woods are some of the most fun to go through with a speedrun mindset when you've mastered them. Web Woods in particular gets a lot faster if you have a ton of practice using Squitter (like pressing L + R mid-jump to instantly spawn a web platform beneath you) and knowing what and where the upcoming obstacles are. Admittedly, most of my practice with him came from painstakingly attempting to find the bonus rooms in Web Woods (it actually took me a few years off and on as a kid before I caved and looked at a walkthrough). That level was the bane of my existence as a kid, but now it's one of my favorite levels to revisit. Though, I think it's totally valid to get frustrated if you're playing to complete the game for the first and only time. Some of those levels *cough*Animal Antics*cough* are brutal.

Very solid and responsive controls, perfect difficulty progression, absolutely outstanding soundtrack that fits the theme of the level perfectly and immerses you into the atmosphere of the levels, gorgeous graphics that still hold up to this day, and fluid difficulty progression where it doesn't get too hard to early yet still pushes the player to get better with each level posing more difficult challenges.

Although having one checkpoint per level is annoying, As you said you do get that sense of satisfaction when you eventually tackle some of those later tough levels! I do remember the infamous Animal Antics section with Squawks the Parrot being one of the toughest platform sections I've ever had to conquer. No Joke I had beads of sweat running down my face as I finally made it through the windy bramble section. Thinking it was over then the player has to try and navigate rattly across those spike pits and then there's the zinger blocking the end of level marker! Still Donkey Kong Country 2 is amazing and I've never played anything that comes close to it apart form the others in the series!

the reason for dixie no being able to spin after bumping is so that you cant fly in the segments were you jump over the barrels shot from canons, and the bee levels is probably so that she can gaint to much height compared to diddy

DKC2 was my first DKC game (though I played 1 on my friends console), so I have a lot more fond nostalgic memories attached to it. The overall themes, tone, music, mood in general to me make it much more nostalgic and memorable than the original too. Regarding sales figures you should mention DKC1 was also bundled with SNES consoles, which definitely gave it a boost in sales. And there was the novelty factor. DKC2 is still the best selling SNES game not bundled. Like others have said most consider 2 superior.

With the Retron 5 you can save the game at any point. 10 save points per game , so you don't have to go all the way back to the check point. You did an excellent job on this review, very detail stuff I forgot about or stuff I didn't even know about like the different ending. I only had about 15 Snes games growing up and DK 1 & 2 I had, so both these hold a special place to me and still own them to this day!

Yeah, my response to most of the complaints, especially those involving Squawks (whom I really enjoy playing as) were "git gud." It felt like a bit of a contradiction with Squawks and Squitter, as you complain about the controls with the former and the pace with the latter without noting that the pace is not decreased when playing as Squawks (all of the bird sections can be completed quickly, although doing so in Animal Antics is absurdly difficult and suicide for most players). I don't agree about the game needing more checkpoints in the levels themselves, as most of the levels aren't really that long, and I wish you would have mentioned that the game includes DK barrels to help compensate for the fact that most players will take some hits (I believe most levels have at least one DK barrel before and after each checkpoint). I imagine part of my non-issue with the lone checkpoints is that the game is much like all the other ones I grew up with from the NES and SNES era; you point out multiple checkpoints in Sonic, but you didn't note that most Mario games (like Super Mario World) similarly have just one checkpoint, and your other example, Limbo, is from a much later console generation. Other games from the DKC SNES era and earlier didn't have any checkpoints. Lastly, I'm quite competent at DKC2 since I've played through it dozens of times, and I'm at a point where I seldom die once on any level or boss fight, but I can see the difficulty making the game less accessible to newcomers now; still, the game is a blast to play after gaining experience, as almost every level can be played through very quickly (especially if the bonuses are ignored). That said, I think you brought up three very valid issues with the game. First, the jumps restricted by the camera: it doesn't happen in most levels, but it's inexcusable any time it leads to a death, as it'll be one of the few times in the game where failure is caused by bad design rather than a lack of skill. Second, the save system is highly flawed; I don't mind the lack of checkpoints, but if you start a world and don't beat enough levels to reach Cranky and get a game over, you will be forced to replay every level you'd already finished; this is highly punishing and brutal, and the game makes it worse by charging you Banana Coins (thankfully, DKC3 fixes all of these problems finally). Third, the game's inability to save your number of lives and Banana Coins is garbage, especially when considering in the context of DKC2's punishing save system; this hasn't been a problem for me on my most recent playthrough, as I played on the Wii U's Virtual Console, which lets you turn off the game and return to it with all your coins and lives, but it's an issue when emulation is the solution. Anyway, I'm always glad to hear people's thoughts on this game, as it's one of my all-time favourites!

Unless I needed him to take out the particularly chunky enemies, always preferred the smaller kongs, Diddy and Dixie. I don't like using Kiddy either. They just feel slower, more cumbersome, and it's easier to get hit. One of many reasons 2 is my favourite.

This was my favorite Kong Country. I had no guide for this one but in return the game gave me the Bird... seriously getting through those levels was its own reward; Hive levels are the tool of the devil... then they felt like copying Ghost and Ghouls and gave us those evil ass thorn twist stages. This game was insanely hard for me to beat but not impossible. I also liked that the bosses were more interactive. Dixie gliding though was why I liked it best; unlike 3 in 2 it did not make things harder but easier.

Diddy's Kong Quest is definitely the best one. The first one is also good, but rather than "harder" it actually feels unpolished in terms of gameplay, the machanics, the connection between the controller and how the characters react to it, it just feels too squared. You have to do the jumps and throws and whatnot in the specific millisecond or otherwise you're screwed. DKC2 just feels more free, and yeah "easier" because it's just programmed/designed better than the first one. The third is just really sad and not even Dixie can save it. The other monkey is a pain in the ass to play as, and overall the levels/worlds are just sadder. If the three of them were remade with today's graphics, let's say for the Switch, I think they could come up with a standard kind of gameplay to unify them all, and I'm sure all the levels from the three games would look absolutely gorgeous.

I'm cool with people liking the first game more than the sequel, as long as they admit it stems from nostalgia lol, because DKC2 is just better in every way. Also, glad you mentioned Web Woods. When I was kid, no matter the game, each one had it's sticking point... a part where I would get stuck for at least 2 months, just trying over and over. In this game, that level was web woods. By the time I reached Animal Antics, I'd mastered everything else the game threw at me up until then (I guess it could be considered the last level, so that makes sense) and antics only took me a day or two of attempts.

An interesting thing about DKC2's first 2 worlds: DKC1's final two worlds were planned to be a lava world and Gangplank Galleon as a full-fledged world rather than just a boss, but both were cut due to memory and time constraints. DKC2 wraps up this unfinished business right at the start.

Hey! I love your videos and analysis, but I did want to mention one thing. When you're processing your voice-over audio, I would recommend using a Desser or an Equalizer. Some of your "S" sounds can get a little whistle-y. A Desser is designed to get rid of this issue; however, I sometimes find it easier to put an Equalizer on the narration track, and turn down the slider around 4K-6K Hz (generally 5K Hz is around where the "hiss" sound comes from). I recommend the Equalizer over the Desser just because Dessers can be a tad confusing and ineffective if not used correctly. If you run your audio through a compressor or dynamics processing, which it sounds like you do, I would recommend doing the Desser or Equalizer afterwards. Best of luck!

This game's kind of broken in speedrunning, and that actually solves a lot of problems. * There are some skips in Parrot Chute Panic (though they need a lot of precision) * It's possible to play through Screech's Sprint without actually triggering Screech and therefore avoiding the whole racing gimmick * Even in 102% speedruns, sometimes it's quicker to go back to the Warp Barrels in the first two worlds after collecting the bonus items * There are places where, with a lot of precision, you can clip through the brambles and save a lot of time on these long levels. DKC speedrunning in general's interesting to watch. With DKC1, the shortest route for Any% uses a weird glitch to skip to the last world but the end is all up to skill. DKC3 seems to be the least buggy, and speedruns are more about minimizing slowdown by having only one Kong on screen and playing perfectly. Returns... okay, it's just funny to see people have to shake the controllers to roll. [Unfortunately, that also means there aren't a whole lot of speedrunners even though otherwise it's a pretty good game for it.] Tropical Freeze has a lot more possibilities with the characters and secret levels.

This was my favorite in the series. There were so many more enemies with unique and fun designs. The levels did get frustrating though, but I crave a challenge. The visuals still hold up and look even more fantastic from your footage. The soundtrack is great and it's the most expensive I've seen in a store here. I was shocked when I saw it at my local Furuhon Ichiba store priced at about $1,200! ...No, I did not pick it up. Playing on the Japanese carts, do you find you may be missing a little of the experience if you don't understand what characters like Cranky Kong in the first one are saying? I worry about that when I skip text in a game with higher level Japanese.

  • @implantgames

    @implantgames

I didn't assume snagging the Japanese carts would be a big deal for a platformer but I can see in hindsight I may have been wrong. Many really dig the clever writing in the trilogy. I don't feel I am missing anything, but I find plots and dialog overrated in platformers in general. But that is just me, others really enjoy that kind of thing and it greatly enhances their enjoyment. Speaking of soundtracks, many years ago I snagged the DK64 soundtrack at Good Will for $2.99. I was stunned when someone from Japan bought it from me off eBay for $50.

+implantgames I would usually skip the text/cutscenes altogether with most video games. I don't care about story at all. But with some modern games, that has changed a little. I went to that store again after work and it was actually $1,600! I took a picture of it. Yeah, $50 was probably a great deal for the Japanese person for that DK soundtrack since CDs here in general are about 2x in the US and with game OSTs it's a lot worse.

  • @audioman612

The Soundtrack is amazing, but owning the CD's is just a collectors thing. I actually have FLAC rips of all of the official CD releases, and they sound awful. They were run through overly-aggressive low-pass filters, resulting in a VERY muddy sound. You're much better ripping the game audio and upsampling it to at least 44.1 Khz (the SNES has a sample rate of about 32 Khz). In my case, since I already had to upsample, I sent all the way up to 24-bit 192 Khz. There is actually a project going on right now where others have extracted the MIDI data from the soundtrack, and have found the synthesizers used to make soundtrack. They are now recreating it using original samples without the SNES's technical limitations. The world done so far sounds fantastic.

Like a comment I've seen below, this is one of my favorite games of all time, I would easily place it in my Top 5, and my personal favorirte platformer. Nostalgia aside, each time I replay it, DKC2 gets better, like a fine wine. It's not perfect, no game is, but it is the platformer that touched me the most, to this day. You pretty much summed up why I like the game, presentation, gameplay, and the fact that it expanded so much on the first game. While I can understand that the difficulty may be a turnoff for some people, I rather enjoy it. To me, a game is a bit of a challenge, you play it to beat it, litteraly, it's a sort of "fight" between you and the machine, the satisfaction comes when the bell is rang, when the game is thoroughly conquered. As strange as this will sound, I like when a game is brutal, I like being punched and kicked by the game's patterns and there is nothing like knowing that you finally beat a challenging piece of hardware, that you "beat the machine" if you will. This is also why I don't hate trial and error, as a game is, in my opinion to be played multiple times, not as a one-time entertainemend endeavour. Again, this is only my opinion and my "philosophy" when it comes to games, and I don't encourage people to think the same as I do, it's a good thing we all have different prisms when it comes to why we like or dislike a game, a movie, a song, and it's good to discuss and even challenge opinions around, always with respect. Great video, I really enjoyed it, I discovered your channel just recently and you've earned yourself a new subscriber, keep up the good work man :). Edit : Sorry about the broken English.

This is my all-time favorite platformer, and one of my top games ever. I'm guilty of nostalgia since I was introduced to this game at a very young age. But I had the opportunity to replay it on Switch and I poured hours into it, no other platformer digs its hooks into me like that. I agree with your critiques. This is still a trial and error game in many ways, and the zoning and hit boxes can be unfair. The timing needed to get into the final bonus room in Haunted Hall is brutal and incredibly precise. The same goes for the bonus challenge itself, fast speed and precision requiring multiple attempts. And when you die, gotta play that section of the level over. Fuck the Haunted Hall bonus room. but it's not often enough to raise my ire. This is a chunkier experience than DKC1. I have a lot more reason to replay levels in 2, which I do happily. The personality and setting are better than any platformer in that era. Super Mario World feels like, well...super mario maker, lots of the same assets mixed around in a clever fashion, and the same music. And the save feature is FINE, and preferable to Sonic 2's "beat the game or start over" approach. I'm curious what a newcomer would say about this game, my 20+ years of experience playing this have only increased my joy as I'm better aware of the challenge and pitfalls. But I'm lucky to say that.
