One of my favorite DK64 tunes (who am I kidding, they're all my favorite) to cover for the month of October. While not exactly spooky, I knew this track would fit the vibe with its melancholy and creepy aesthetic from the level. I remember trekking through this level as a kid and remembering how dark it always felt. I tried emulating that feel in the video with the lighting, which was challenging on its own. I also really got the chance to show off the double bass, which I'm glad to have my hands on, even if only temporarily. For a Grant Kirkhope track, I couldn't settle for anything less. I also got the chance to track the upper strings in stereo and through different equipment at a different studio, which I can say was a game-changer at the very least. While this video was several weeks of constant planning and recording/producing, I'm actually gonna miss the process of making the very track that I've wanted to do for the longest time.

I know it's not gonna happen, but if by some twist of fate Nintendo wanted to use these for a DK64 remake, would you let them?

probably the only way nintendo could get my money for the expansion pass / n64 stuff, if they had dk64 in there. No way a remake would ever get made though :< i've lost hope.
This is one of those covers truly worthy of those "the devs should just use this version in a remaster" compliments. No "marketability" concerns diluting it's quality, just going for the strongest it can be, as art should be. Like the original, your cover will last a lifetime in a person's mental playlist of "things I hum sometimes out of nowhere because I love it." The haunting magic and curious fear of the track really rises to the forefront; it's power literally gets felt in the heart. The song hits that hard with such a gentle kiss. Especially the xylophones, no words do justice to their sparkle. A rendition for the ages as a new definitive edition.

Don't do that. Don't give me hope.
This song reminds me of the innocence of childhood.
Criminally underrated video. Mastapeice rendition of a mastapeice game. This is what the composers would have done without the hardware limitations of the N64. Poifection.
This is exactly what I want from a cover. Extremely faithful cover of the original using the instruments simulated by the synth. And no change to the tempo
I don't know why, but Donkey Kong spook level osts are always special. Beautiful, Nico!

mad jack is top 3 boss for me i think, but only if the track includes his signature laugh. idk why but his crazy lil laugh just makes it better.
Who else used to regularly come to this level specifically to play the Donkey Kong arcade machine
It's always nice when someone you recently subbed to has even more gems farther back.
First off, phenomenal intro. Second of all, at the beginning, the violins were used in a way that I never would have deduced in the original music! I always assumed that it was multiple violins in sync just rapidly moving the bow back and forth between the strings. Yet you captured the same melody with three different bouts of timing, and slower, too! It makes me realize I may have been mistaken at how Grant Kirkhope actually created that part of the song. It just goes to show that the visuals can appear differently than what the audio implies. And once again, immaculate timing on the marimba with that fabulous guitar playing. Such soothing rhythm. Halfway through I start to feel like I'm at a mad scientist's lab where Frankenstein's monster is about to rise, and I'm not sure what that keyboard sound is that's making me imagine it that way. In conclusion, fantastic piece to have chosen for halloween. I got goosebumps, because you're so good at this, it's scary! ^^ Happy Halloween! :D

I'm doing a 365 Days of Music challenge, and I selected this for Day 287! I've selected several of your DK64 covers before and commented on their respective videos (Fungi Forest, Crystal Caves, Gloomy Galleon). I do try to include a variety of artists in my list, but I guess it's obvious that I keep coming back here. These level theme covers are just spot on. I love how faithful they are to the original while still sounding so fresh and alive and new. I love getting to hear these beautiful melodies no longer restricted by hardware limitations. I also just like...the vibe of your videos. It's a chill, happy environment. Feels wholesome here, and the covers just sound wholesome. Thanks for creating that environment. It's the kind of thing we need on KZread and in the world in general. I was thrilled to see you upload this. If you don't mind, as I've done before, I'll go ahead and share my write-up! **Day 287:** "Frantic Factory (cover)" Earlier in this list, I chose Mad Jack's theme. Mad Jack is the boss of this level, and the melody, for the most part, is the same. But the feel is so much different. While Fungi Forest is my favorite level in Donkey Kong 64, Frantic Factory is my sister's. It's a winding and confusing toy factory (with extra malice!), massive and full of unique areas and rooms: an R&D department, a testing room, a production room, and other halls and nooks to check out all throughout. It even features a classic Donkey Kong arcade cabinet which you can actually play. And it's the actual arcade game, not the NES port -- a rare sight on a home console! The music is constant, like clockwork, constantly busy. The winding up of the music box is a nice touch -- the winding sound was present in the original track as well. While the original used woodwinds, Nico Mendoza enjoys substituting with electric guitars, which works especially well in this instance. The R&D room used some muted electric guitar sounds, so it's almost like a little callback to that area. There's something a little bit creepy about this track as well. I think it's the music box more than anything. Something so innocent-sounding playing in a minor key is perfect for a toy factory owned by the game's antagonist. This is another solid cover by Mendoza. At this rate, he's almost covered every level theme! I'm glad he has: as I've said before, the soundtrack is stellar but limited by the hardware of the time, and it deserves these "HD remakes." I'm thrilled that the talented Mendoza is lending his time and effort to remastering these in his own way, and I'm especially glad he's chosen to cover them so faithfully.

Super glad you've come back regularly! I get that same feeling arranging a new tune and putting the whole thing into production each time. Getting to recreate every single element from the ground up takes me so deep into the game, even more than just replaying it on the N64 years later. I can't even choose a favorite level since so many of them were so fun to explore and get lost in, in the same way it feels getting the perfect take, shot, mix, and video cut. Thanks for your comment!
i love this song and game
talent
This theme song could've also suited the Toyman from Superman/Justice League. Aside from how Frantic Factory is settled in a toy factory in DK64, the Toyman in Superman/Justice League turns simple harmless toys into weapon
