If you enjoy this video, give it a like to support with with the algorithm! Fix Notes: - Mentioned within the video that the Expansion Pack was solely used for fixing that game breaking bug, but there is much more to the story as infact it was gonna be used all along for the purposes of lighting.

The expansion pack wasn't the solution for the crash, that story came from another team at Rare and Mark Stevenson (Lead Artist) on DK64 said it was to include the expansion pack from the beginning, like it was pushed on them. When asked what they used it for he confirmed it's only on the lighting

@@safebox36 I think perhaps the MOST that may have happened is that Rare/Nintendo were prepping a "4 meg" version in addition to the 8 meg Expansion Pak SKU, and when they couldn't overcome a certain bug, the 4MB version had to be scrapped. But yes the Expansion Pak was always specced into development, going back to its early days as a 64DD title (however much development was actually done on it as a 64DD title by the DKC3 team, we still have no idea).

For further context. The crash was caused by a memory leak that was never fixed because it was discovered after the game was already in production. In order to prevent the leak from causing an uproar and causing them to recall the game they decided to take advantage of the extra ram from the expansion to extend the amount of time the Memory leak took to cause a crash. This made it so it would be rare for a player to encounter the crash during a standard play session which for most people would be around 2 to 3 hours. Without the expansion pack the crash would occur much sooner at around 1 to 1 and half hours which definitely would cause the game to crash within most people's play sessions with the game.

imo Donkey Kong 64's DNA remains in every maximalist AAA "open world" game with an overworld map completely saturated with waypoints and points of interest. Bigger isn't always better, and imo the Banjo sequels were a big lesson in that regard. The first game's levels are perfectly sized, Tooie it's easy to get lost in certain levels, and the Nuts & Bolts maps were so big they had to add vehicle traversal.

My understanding is that Stop 'n Swop was based on the idea that contents in RAM would remain for 30 seconds after removing the cartridge, as was the case in the prototype. This wound up reduced to a couple seconds in the released console. The fact that you'd have to swap a lot quicker made it far less safe, since kids would be in a hurry to swap them out.

from what this one's heard, the expansion pack didn't truly solve the crash problem, but it DID make it take far longer to trigger. Something on the order of days straight without powering down the console(or resetting, this one thinks?). Something the vast majority of players wouldn't do, but the problem did re-emerge with the VC re-release on Wii U, with suspend functions and save states making it more feasible that the game would keep running without a chance to flush RAM, resulting in the bug becoming something you could realistically encounter again. That said, it would still take days and days worth of play(probably close to or over a hundred hours) and as long as you save and reset every couple days of constant play, you'd be fine. at least, that's this one's understanding. it was basically a memory leak from the sounds of it.

For anyone wondering about the memory leak myth for DK64. The idea is that there is a set of data that constantly gets saved to the memory but isn’t ever cleared. Taking up the system’s memory and causing a crash. The problem with the Expansion Pack fix though, is that it would just add more memory for the data to take up. Causing the problem to take even longer to crash. But not a direct fix.

This game has SO much stuff that needs to be covered. One in particular is the original boss fight for Fungal Forest. That one has fascinated me the most, but can never find more details on it. Another is the lone pillar in Creepy Castle that potentially had a statue of DK or the Ice Key or just something the Devs put to screw with the fandom. Who knows? DK64 is a marvel of a game.

In retrospect the N64 expansion pack was basically the Sega 32X add-on. And if we remember a fully upgraded Sega Genesis included the Sega CD and 32x. not really? the expansion pack ONLY added more RAM. it let you have more things loaded but didn't itself increase fidelity. Some games did improve frame rate or fidelity(or both) using the ExPac, but that was more adjusting the code to take advantage of the increased RAM. The 32X and Sega CD instead each had their own processors(and maybe RAM?) which allowed for higher color depth, sprite scaling and rotation, and even rudimentary texture-mapped 3D at times. The Sega CD and 32X are more comperable to the 64DD; an add-on with additional hardware features(and to further comparisons between SCD and 64DD, they both eschewed cartridges in favor of spinning media.)

Ironically the 32X was actually quite a hefty expansion that barely any developers took advantage of. In particular it pushed the Genesis's color output into the territory of "practically infinity." It went from iirc 256 colors to some five digit number that, again, barely any devs made usage of. The advantages of the N64 expansion pak were certainly noticeable in games like Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark, but those were late generation games from two of the system's top developers.

5:00 i believe other commenters have mentioned this but this is an urban myth spread by someone who wasnt even on the DK64 team and has since been debunked. also 6:56 Kirkhope actually took over from DKC3 composer Eveline Fischer. multiple sources state that she was originally attached to the project before its "change in direction" (i.e Banjo team members coming in to support the preliminary team from DKC3). She ended up being assigned to sound effects in the final game and began focusing more on voiceover work for games such as Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day. David Wise was never attached to DK64; he moved on from the series after DKC2 in order to work on Project Dream (where of course he was ultimately replaced by...Grant Kirkhope!)

Yeah the game is still a rather hard sell on this alone and honestly there are so many ways to remedy the game like unifying the collectables and quick switching characters. Hope the game gets a remaster one day to do that. Otherwise yeah as a huge DKC fan I really wish they had stuck to the 2.5d/Crash Bandicoot style gameplay they wanted to try

I know compiling all of this information into a video and editing clips and screenshots can be tedious, but releasing videos in to parts is unnecessary, just hold out until you have things finalized, as interested as I am into cut content of games I grew up with id rather just wait for someone to shell out the grand shebang then this. Unsubscribing. Good video, good editing and splicing, but just get it all together before showcasing.

  • @TheObsessiveGamer

It's just a 2 part release and for "algorithmic" purposes I can't wait toooooo long to just make a super large video, otherwise the channel can suffer as it has prior when i've tried. I do plan to compile these eventually though into one big video down the road though.
