💕Donkey Chat! Trigger Stacking, Behavior and Donkey Training

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Donkey behavior can be misunderstood and its important that we look around at our surroundings. We need to ask ourselves what can be going on here that could be concerning to the donkey.

Hi! I just recently found you on KZread and your videos are helpful. I’m getting a standard size Jack in a few weeks. Once we have him Vet checked and neutered we want to get him a donkey friend. Do you recommend we get a gelding or a Jennie? I have found conflicting information online. These donkeys will be pets only. Thanks!

Either can make a good companion. My personal preference is to keep boys together and girls together. Sometimes the boys can still be annoying to a jenny during her cycle, try to mount,etc... and the boys usually like to play more than girls too. My boys play all the time and its really good exercise for them! Plus its great entertainment for me! :-)

Question: can you train a donkey to relax while scary noises and activities are going on around them? Horses can be trained that way, but am curious about donkeys. Thanks.

Yes they can! Its all about building confidence, gaining trust and training.. just like with horses!

On the KZread channel Raising Voyagers, their jenny, who has been very gentle and friendly with the whole family, suddenly became aggressive and chased the children and tried to kick the father. Truly she was gentler than any donkey I have ever been around. The whole family is traumatized, but these people have never had large animals of any kind. Stella, their donkey, also does not have any animal companions. In the past month or so they changed her pasture to one with no chestnuts, left for eight days (they had a neighbor feed Stella), and they have been using a leaf blower. When you talked about trigger stacking, Stella may just have had it. You might find the video entitled Terrifying Incident on our Homestead interesting, and quite frankly this family and the donkey could use some guidance.

Donkeys are SO misunderstood.. so many things could have caused that behavior change but yes, it’s likely a combination and poor Stella just couldn’t take it anymore. I’m careful not to give unsolicited advice because people often get so hateful about it but feel free to send them my name or video if they are asking for help
