Donington Park Crashes/Highlights, MSVR, 29/6/24

Part 1 of what was a pretty chaotic MSVR event despite not feeling too bad in person. The Legends manage to put another car into a spectacular series of flips out of our sight but the main drama came from the Caterham 420R series with the second Caterham in 4 years to not only go up in flames in a very scary way, but to also set fire to the occupant inside! Duncan Greenaway climbing from the recently ignited Caterham not initially realizing it had set fire to his back too before fellow drivers Steve Riley and Ben Rowsell dragged him to the ground and put the fire out! Thankfully all 3 drivers standing back up shortly after the dramatic moment, but all 3 taken to hospital for checks which left the circuit without any ambulance and thus gave us a fairly large delay to sit through. Thankfully also not as bad as Dave Morgans crash here in 2020 that remains the only one we've never shown for being too harrowing to watch. The rest of the show was relatively calm. The Northern Sports & Saloons providing a very good first race and a particularly tail happy Subaru, the rest of the Caterhams were fairly behaved and would remain that way for the majority of the weekend, and I learned that the Production GTi Golf Championship actually still exists!

Just wanted to send some love to the person that makes these videos. So many events get lost and forgotten about

Poor response from the fire crews im sorry. Took them a minute to get there. Very lucky that wasn't worse!

Glad to see the drivers of the fiery Caterhams getting out relatively ok. But a very poor response for whatever reason by rescue teams, (and before I'm attacked, I am a competitor, I know they are usually brilliant etc etc) but whatever about a minute for the fire vehicle, 2 minutes before the ambulance (if it was one)is very poor. I fear it's one of the problems of modern circuits, car park sized gravel traps, not enough marshals who aren't allowed leave posts etc but it's a bit scary to see. On top of that, we've seen several incidents over the years (the afformentioned unshown shunt, the one at brands a couple of years back) with 7 style cars where they have been rear ended and gone on fire. More needs to be done around the fuel tank I think. On a lighter note, it's good to see neither driver added to their repair bills by using their on board, very expensive (and utterly useless in a real fire like that) fancy plumbed in extinguishers 😂
