    Andy Hiby firmware platform is ridiculous. Probably only IT people can upload firmware on their devices 😅 I use FC 4 for almost a month and I can’t update firmware and I tried dozens of times, a lot of people complain about this issue on net. The Questyle platform though not perfect is by far better and not just better you can actually update firmware on your device 😄 About FC6 I appreciate your opinion and would probably order one just because your thoughts but I will pass till Hiby makes 4.4 version of this DAC (and make proper FW platform)

    Awesome review as ever Andy. So how FC6 compare to Questyle M15?

  • @donglemadness

    @donglemadness

    Жыл бұрын

    M15 is a prime example of modern HiFi sound in compact form factor, and by that reckoning it is also not analogue sounding compared to FC6, RU6, DACport HD or Ovidius B1. Ultimately the preferences of users will determine which one they prefer more. I came from the cassette user generation so I can find enjoyment in this analogue sound more, but there's also people who prefers modern touch to it, which again what M15 offers

    Thank you for posting your very informative reviews. I am looking to get a DAC dongle and would appreciate your advice. My mobile gear is Etymotic ER3SE and Sennheiser HD6XX. I was originally interested in getting the HiBy FC6 but also came across your review of the iBasso DC04Pro which is less expensive. I have to admit I do really enjoy the R2R sound as I have a Denafrips Ares II for my home system but at the same time I am not sure spending $300 on the mobile gear I have is justified. I would appreciate your thoughts on which DAC to get. I like the sound neutral, warm, smooth, natural, and tactile.

  • @donglemadness

    @donglemadness

    Жыл бұрын

    If you already know the sound of R2R and enjoy it, then you would understand it is quite unique sort of Hi-Fi-Analog combo which is very hard to attain by pure delta sigma DAC. But if you prefer not to spend the price asked by either FC6 or RU6, then yes you can get iBasso DC04Pro which is an amazing DAC/Amp in its own right, minus the unique R2R analog timbre. There's a good reasons R2R don't come cheap, they are so very difficult to implement in this sort of small form factor and still sounding amazing. You can also consider Ovidius B1, one of the very few delta sigma dongle that does analog sound really well

    Nice review, Andy. I would have bought this dongle if it had a 4.4mm plug. I hope that Hiby will bring another high-end desktop R2R DAC / Amp on the market, in the size of the "Ifi xDSD Gryphon" with more features like Bluetooth and requiring codecs, very important more in-output with enough power. I got my "R6 iii" yesterday with a nice green leather case".

    If it's not a trouble and hassle, I request to test the top three contenders on a desktop system. For example using an external Balanced/Unbalanced Headphone Amplifier (if possible volume matched) with a Headphone (fairly Neutral, open back) to judge the true potential of these DACs to challenge higher valued desktop systems. I ask this to you because as customer I want to use the any these portable R-2R DACs (because they are cheaper and have that magical sound R-2Rs have) in a Desktop setup (wherein I wouldn't have to spend too much to get a decent R-2R system lets say under USD 500). If not a dedicated video, if you can just check this and reply on it would be great. Still thank you for the review. Also thumbs up for the grading system.

  • @donglemadness

    @donglemadness

    Жыл бұрын

    Not a hassle at all. Perhaps I should mention clearly that my tests are exhaustive. While I use Android devices most of the time, I subjected all the tested dongles especially the top performers to rigorous testing on my Windows 10, running USB 3.0 power with volume matched scenario - examining the output they produce to drive stubborn stuffs like HiFiMan HE400SE, Fostex T40RP MK3 or Sennheiser HD650. The collective results from those tests influence a lot on my overall rating and in fact for the most part, I am happy to use those dongles independently because they can really substitute most desktop DAC/Amp (the ones rated 4.5 stars and above). On the other hand, to perceive that you can only get the best out of PC setup is not quite accurate, because now we have truly competent Android devices like Samsung Galaxy S20, S21 or Sony Xperia 1 iV offering legitimate 900mA USB 3.2 which actually rival the output of most laptops running USB 3.0. For as long as the attached DACs are granted USB exclusive access and Bitperfect mode using either HIBY Music app or UAPP, then rest assured they will perform 100% similar to desktops. PS: the comparisons done in this video was done 100% from usage on Windows 10 USB 3.0 because I need to use the volume slider element of Windows which is not so easy to be done on Android

    Hi Andy, because of your opinion in your reviews I decide to order Cayin RU6, I would go with FC6 if they put 4.4 and little bit more power, but, they probably decide to make two same DAC (in near future) and pump out more money from the costumers (that is my opinion maybe I'm wrong but that's how I feel). I would like to ask you for your opinion about what IEM to order, which one will be perfect match for RU6? I`m running IE600 but I want to order another good IEM but bit different than IE600 so I was thinking something around Xenns TOP, Xenns UP, Oracle Mk2 and DUNU SA6 MK2 the question is, what do you think which one of them will be good pair with RU6? I like my IE600 (in combo with M15 and Hiby FC4) very much but I want in my collection something that is bit unreal (that wow effect) so it has to be something like IE600 on steroids if you understand what I mean :) Thank You very much again for all your work and effort.

    FC5 is already a great dongle. At this level, you are looking at marginal differences if to be compared with DC04Pro, which offers wider and more open staging, a bit more of air and edge smoothness. However, FC5 to FC6 is a significant upgrade in terms of sound richness, true analog sound and yet exceedingly analytical and musical while at it. I have to say yes that FC6 being marginally richer with dynamic density offer denser Treble too, but really even with RU6 I did not find the upper frequency performance lacking, perhaps because almost all of my regular listening devices are natively already very resolving with Treble prowess. In fact for the same reasons I am more likely to avoid typical native ESS Sabre bright tuning that amplifies the upper register to the point of imparting Pinna Glare

    @@donglemadness You really have a unique and original approach to the presentation of the "audio madness" that many of us suffer from. And I really sincerely appreciate that you are original because your presentations are different from others. But to be completely honest, on the example of RU2 and FC6, after watching 20 minutes I don't know what the sound difference is between them, and I should spend several hundred dollars per model as if I were throwing them out the window... According to that, it turns out that DACs, which use delta-sigma technology, do not differ from each other. When I look at the technical documentation of delta-sigma DACs, from any manufacturer ESS, AKM, Cirrus Logic; all of them struggle to maintain a proper signal precisely in the area of high frequencies - the treble area (in all of them, signal weakening occurs due to the impossibility of properly presenting the additional harmonics that make up the sound signal, and it is precisely these additional higher harmonics that give the natural color of the sound). There is no amplification as you mean it, but attenuation in the upper part of the spectrum. And yet, I agree, delta-sigma DACs sound harsh. R2R technology also suffers from properly presenting additional harmonics (this is especially pronounced for the upper part of the spectrum), but somehow it sounds more natural. Andy, be honest and watch your own video, as if you should give a few hundred dollars out of your own pocket, and answer the question to yourself: "What essential information did I get after watching 20 minutes?"

    That will happen to any dongle especially when connected to a phone. How i could miss this one video, haha.. So, have you made the new score comparison for every dongle yet, sir? I mean, where do you post that? I dont see it on your web (its still the old scoring style, i guess?). Tho, i would suggest to use non linear scoring for each aspect. Like perhaps you can put 15 as maximum scores for the sound aspects. But only 7 for maximum score of volume management, 4 for maximum score of value proposition, etc. Well, its not necessary like. You know better than me regarding those aspects. But, atleast for me, it doesnt make sense if a dongle with medium quality of sound aspects. But the score is so high, because of feature factor, power factor, etc. Perhaps such case doesnt happen on the 5 stars dongles. But, most likely it will happen for the 4 stars dongles (and below). I think, even in 4.5 stars dongles, its already happening.

So it is not new. I appreciate your feedbacks and I will always factor in feedbacks from others in order to make my contents more relevant to the audiences. I stopped using iPhones since 2021 precisely for the reasons you are hearing now. iPhones has been proven to be erratic with top tiered dongles and will simply just not work with some of them. So I have no means to test on iPhones since I am 100% on Android now for 2 years already. Mostly it is the power draw restrictions that iPhones has for USB, of which it will refuse to connect if the USB attachment even attempt to draw power beyond what iOS deemed as suitable - it is a huge deal breaker for me. Android have no such issues. But perhaps you will be okay with Macbook because the USB C on that one will not be as restrictive

High impedance will always be harder to drive than low sensitivity. That's why most dongles in specs show only a few mW's of power at 300 or more ohms, while showing hundreds of mW's at 32 ohms.
