UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso was a mixed martial arts event held on September 27, 2014, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
A lightweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Khabib Nurmagomedov was briefly linked to this event. However, the pairing was canceled after Nurmagomedov suffered a knee injury that sidelined him indefinitely.
Jorge Masvidal and Bobby Green were originally scheduled to face each other on this card. However, on August 14, the UFC announced that Green would now face Donald Cerrone and Masvidal would face James Krause.
On August 19, following his release from Bellator MMA, Eddie Alvarez signed with the UFC and made his debut against Donald Cerrone in the co-main event for the card. Bobby Green, Cerrone's earlier opponent, was booked for a future fight card against a new opponent.
In the first round, Cerrone absorbed a barrage of uppercuts that was Pride-era Don Frye-esque. In the third round, he unleashed his own barrage, but of savage leg kicks that took Alvarez's leg out from under him and left him unable to confidently walk after the final horn sounded.
It was a fight that was hard to imagine being anything but exciting...and it did not disappoint. Alvarez showed off his crisp boxing. Cerrone showed off his long reach and deceptive power.
In the end, Cerrone's punches and kicks would add up. Alvarez's eye swelled shut and he was unable to plant on his front leg. That allowed "Cowboy" to push his way toward a unanimous decision win.

Eddie I think was already a champ & a renowned fighter in Strikeforce before moving to UFC. He lost the tittle to Chandler.

@@fanofmma100 what are you smoking? Tony would’ve been champ too if he got an easy road and then fought RDA. Prime Eddie was 4-3-1 outside of Bellator and was never better than Tony and definitely not better than Khabib

@@noelnoni7310 he definitely wasn't better than Khabib for sure, i never said he was, Khabib would've smoked Eddie. but Eddie is better than Tony. finished RDA in R1, whereas Tony went 5 rounds with him. (RDA was depleted in both those fights tho, pre-iv ban rda destroys both eddie and tony) the reason Eddie had a 4-3-1 record in the ufc is because he fought absolute killers like Pettis, Gaethje, RDA, Poirier, McGregor & Pre-IV Ban Cowboy, all those guys would smoke Tony too. Eddie should've beat Dustin the first time but got robbed by questionable reffing Eddie had a terrible performance vs Conor yes, but Conor played mind games and got into Alvarez's head. Eddie could've won if he didnt let McG get into his head + beat Prime Chandler too Eddie is a way better fighter than you're giving him credit for
Both of these Fighters are outstanding! This was a true contrast with Style versus Style! Eddie Alvarez is a wrestler/ boxer and Donald Cerrone is a submission fighter who fights tall and is a kickboxer and these two Warriors put on one hell of a fight!

Khabib was just coming up when most of these names were ranked. Do you think anybody in the top would care to face him in 2014 or 2015?

@wonderworld1928 yeah but either way Khabib hasn't proved himself enough. Prime Henderson v Khabib wouldve been awesome. The best bjj guy Khabib fought was RDA who wasn't as good as Cerrone or Henderson. The best wrestler was Tibau who he arguably lost against. He never faced someone like Chandler. Khabib is top 10 GOATs but not top 5. He beat mostly strikers. He shouldve fought Pettis too. He literally took most of the easiest fights.

You are delusional. Conor destroyed cowboy and Eddie. Tibau was using steroids. Khabib destroyed trujillo, rda, conor, tibau, Michael Johnson, al iaquinta, barboza, justin and dustin. Khabib would kill cowboy and Eddie. Chandler is a easy fight for khabib. Chandler lost to dustin. Khabib is the Light weight goat. Usman destroyed benson. Benson is average. Khabib is 29-0 in mma. Khabib is 13-0 in ufc. Khabib never lost a fight. Arguably khabib never lost a round. Gsp and khabib are the goats. Silva and aldo lost so many fights. Jon is a cheater. The Mighty mouse fought with absolutely no one.
