I agree with a lot of these but this hobby can also teach people things, depending on if the person is willing to learn. One big thing it has taught me is patience and impulse control, it sure has been a journey.

A red flag for me is not researching the fish but then spending time reading about equipment learning your fish will teach you what types of equipment you'll need

Research!! I worked at a pet store. No matter how many times I would tell customers that certain fish were NOT compatible they would still buy them because they were ‘pretty’. I’d see those same customers come in with dead fish, mad at me!! 🙄🙄

Good list of red flags. I have seen people join my local aquarium society and reply to every for sale post. 6 months down the line, everything is for sale - Go Slow!

The house I bought last year had a 55 gal tank with 3 old black skirt tetras in it. Such a process as I learned to clean up the tank and learn everything from scratch. Now I have 2 fully stocked large community tanks, a 10 gallon bn pleco and guppy tank, and a 5 gallon with a betta and a adfrog. I find the weekly water changes relaxing now. I've made mistakes, but I'm so happy to learn something new.

I'm getting close to 2 years in and have seven tanks in the house. Close to 600 gallons of water just in my living room alone 🤣

I've been at it for nigh on fifty years. I look after my fish better than I do myself!

I got my first fish tank like 4 years ago--a single betta fish in a 10g for my cat to watch. Now I have 4 tanks with another on the way. A big red flag to me is if you don't actually care for the animals in your care. These creatures didn't chose to be pets so we owe them the best life we can provide. Pro Tip from my 1st experience keeping larger fish: Just because one fish is supposed to be too big for another one to eat doesn't me the larger one won't try and if one fish gets another stuck in their mouth it's easier to wiggle the other one out when you isolate the bigger fish to a bucket.

easy to start a tank, but not as easy to maintain. not that its hard but can be easy to lose that initial enthusiasm then ur tanks suffer.

You are on Point.. I found these Two Small Aquariums at A Thrift store.! They were Just tooooo Good to pass up. they had everything, lights/Plants/Filters/heaters! Very Clean+ plants.. all for $30.00…this the Only Reason Im back doing this.. but I will take good care of the Fish/ I like Aquariums..😄

If your to busy…… the only option. Would be to hire somebody to maintain your tanks….. but thats more 💴 money

Only been in the hobby since January and I have 120gal in aquariums in my room at this point lol waited for years to be able to get into the hobby and I have committed my self to the life of each type of fish I keep selling snails of all types and guppies so hobby is paying for itself

When I started in the hobby back in the late 80’s I wanted the best aquarium furniture, rare fish , crystal clear water with no algae, it was all about what i wanted and not what the fish wanted or needed, I was a selfish fish keeper, I would quickly get bored of the fish and constantly changing things, frustration would set it when fish would die and water wouldn’t stay clear for long, I would quit and sell everything then months later I would try it again because I just loved fish , I learned that fish needs comes first and not your needs , watching videos of fish in there natural habitats helped me to appreciate them more and enjoy my tanks more.

I have 3 tanks. 32 gallon. 55 gallon. And a 150……. Im in a town home…… if i had more space id get more🤣

I want to so bad but I have chronic illnesses n barely can take care of myself it sucks I have plenty time. Gastroparesis. Paralyzed stomach and seizures,a true curse. I can’t do anything

Do research on common diseases and get at least a couple of bottles of wide spectrum meds. Also at least a 10g hospital/quarantine tank so if something happens you can isolate the fish and not waste all your meds trying to treat your whole main tank.

Learn everything you can about the fish you’re interested in before buying it….don’t go out and buy an Oscar and put it in a ten gallon tank lol
