BMW also make a charger compatible with R 1300 GS called the "BMW Battery charger plus". Very neat piece of kit and less complicated than the Optimate 4 quad. It actually gives you a read out of exactly how charged your battery is, and the exact voltage in the battery.

From a few weeks experiance, I have found it better to connect the Optimate directly to the bike's battery, rather than through the CAN-BUS connection.

I’ve had exactly the same. In fact within a day and a half the perfectly good battery on a 1 week old bike had been entirely drained. I’ve been in touch with Optimate and BMW and they both suggested wiring it direct to the battery as a safer alternative to the CANbus. They speculate that somehow the use of the Din port has caused a load on the battery. I’ve subsequently wired the battery direct, which seemed to be at 1.9v, and not managed to save the battery after another 24 hours of charging. I’m awaiting a visit from BMW but not much fun with the shiny new bike yet!!

@@kelcombe I realized it bit more early and my battery still had 11V. I bought the BMW charger which works fine using the DIN socket.

I’ve now had the visit from BMW. The gentleman that called was able to revive the battery which had 31 errors that needed clearing. He also left me a BMW charger directly wired to the battery on loan. The BMW charger is working perfectly and within 12 hours we’ve now got full charge. Also the BMW charger looks as if it’s a badged CTEK model. You’d need to qualify it yourself but pictures of the models seem exactly the same!

When the charger sleeps ( monitor mode ) the canbus switches off the charger port so you lose the monitoring part of the charger as it keeps the socket live by sending signals to the canbus this does not happen , I also suspect it uses the battery temperature monitor on the canbus system to ensure the battery does not overheat during charging.

My Optimate4 quad program has just arrived from Nippy Normans, off to connect to my R1300GS !.

Nice one, don't even bother reading the instructions it's so easy just don't get confused by the logo that looks like not connected. It actually means Cambus
