Quite an impressive rig. Did not know the sheer-leg would have it's own propulsion - was scratching my head until all that torque howled into action. "Wet the ropes... and do the windows while you're out there!" 😄And that Water Lilly is such a dainty flower on the canal... that will push you to Hell and back! Literally.

@@MrBugsier5 you find that funny huh Just shows you've never been there and done that The Miami River is narrow and winding through the heart of the city like a mountain trail It is lined on both sides with both commercial, yacht and pleasure boats It has a constant flow of heavy traffic of everything from John boats, fishing boats, super yachts and drunken pleasure boats with drunk girls flashing anyone with a camera The river has one drawbridge after another some of which are at bends in the river With a tug on the front pulling and a stearn tug stearing The bridge wings of the ships 🚢 being pulled in and out miss the raised drawbridge by inches While the tugs are having to come inches away from moored boats and ships on each bank All while having drunks in small boats try and squeeze past at the same time Yeah, it definitely is a thousand % more difficult than this or anywhere most captains will ever see

These fabulous watercraft skills come about because it is not just job security and job satisfaction they are perfecting and protecting, but the very existence of the country they love and call home. Parts of some other countries are also "hollow" but not nearly the percentage hollow that the Dutch have to maintain against. Holland - hollow land.

The biggest problem they were fighting is that the propwash from the tug is pushing right back against the the crane platform. While there is usually better control when towing rather than pushing a longer towing cable would have made a lot of difference by giving more area to distribute the propwash before trying to pull the load through it, especially with a square bow.

  • @markfryer9880

Although lengthening the tow line would have reduced the directional accuracy of the tow. It comes down to a trade-off between the two outcomes.

I've joined in the speculation of what these hull sections are for. I recently thought that they might be for a ship extending program, i.e. insert two section in an existing one just to provide more cargo space. Anyone know if that is a possibility. I don't think it has been mentioned before. When the storms were raging was the sheerlegs moored with a couple of anchor bolts screwed into the canal bank?
