Don't Starve Together: Projector [Wagstaff Animated Short]

Ойындар

Get Don't Starve Together on Steam: klei.gg/PlayDST Who is the man behind the mysterious machinations that have been keeping our Survivors so busy as of late? Wagstaff was not always the successful industrialist he is now, but even back then he knew one thing to be true: who you really are is not nearly as important as the version of yourself that you project out to the world.
Today we are releasing our first "Intermission". Intermissions will take place roughly halfway between major updates and do not contain any game content. For the first Intermission in the 2024 roadmap, we have an animated short, a new login bonus, a new Twitch drop, some new vignettes have been added. Full details here! klei.gg/DSTCurrentUpdate

So that is how Wagstaff was able to project himself and his tools into the Constant. He just puts them in front of the projector, and the shadows manifest as semi-real objects. Also, Wagstaff is definitely a neutral alignment, as he runs in to help people, but also steals from them and when forced to choose between knowledge and human lives, he chooses knowledge

(I doubt anyone will understand this reference or even read this considering that this is in reply of a comment near the bottom, but I like writing out my thoughts so I am going to do that) Realized a bit of a connection between this and a video game called Stellaris. In that game, there are things called crisis paths that make you a major threat to the whole galaxy, with one already existing and one being about to release (as of writing this). What is interesting is I feel these two crisis paths line up with the two "alignment bosses" of Charlie and Wagstaff. The currently existing crisis path in Stellaris is where you are blatantly trying to ascend to a higher plane of existence by destroying the rest of the galaxy, infiltrating and destroying all other empires from the inside and outside, and other empires are either treated as enemies or slaves. Similarly, Charlie, the "old alignment boss," is bent on summoning a being that will likely destroy the entire planet in its summoning (considering some lore that I can't explain in just a small reply), and Charlie only treats the characters as pawns to manipulate for her ends, while outright showing up to destroy beings that stand in her way (ancient fuelweaver). However, the new Stellaris crisis path that was announced is a bit different. Instead of blatantly being corrupted by dark powers and being guided to destroy the galaxy as in the old path, in this new path you are merely searching for improving your technological power to the point of being able to alter the very fabric of the universe. Here, the whole crisis comes from just your general apathy to what your experiments do to the rest of the galaxy, you are still totally willing to help others and treat them as near equals or pupils, but your main goal is to build a new universe for yourself, and if in doing so a few (billion) people need to be abducted or die to some minor after effects of wormhole opening, then so be it. This lines up really well with Wagstaff, as he is not only a scientist seeking to alter the fabric of reality with lunar magic, but he also seems to treat Wilson as a near equal or pupil, and he does seem to have some care to the people around him. However, he is more than willing to steal to get the resources he needs, and his actions are ripping tears in reality and summoning destructive beasts, to which he feels no responsibility to clean up after.

Guess Maxwell is starting to have a bit of competition on the whole “ruining your life for fun” thing, first the poor guy stuck under the rubble, then his assistant/coworker better known as Wx-78, then the spider he took to Webber’s father to study, later on Winona attempting to “save” him even though he could just have used the projector, and soon Wilson who ended up in his research Shack with the Voxola radio that got Wilson tricked. But unlike Maxwell, Wagstaff barely acknowledges these people’s existence unless if it’s for his own benefit, Maxwell seems a lil’ bit more nicer I suppose.

@@nait5340The thing is, Maxwell got like that because he was exposed to all that shadow magic and the throne. I think it'd be reasonable for anyone to power trip or crack under the manipulation of Them. Maxwell was good once, albeit naive. And after he got off the throne, he wasn't really trying to do things like that anymore. Wagstaff is never on the throne, not even in the constant properly. Yet (I believe) he acts like a complete sociopath here. (I don't know too much about Wagstaff though so don't trash me for not mentioning something.) So overall I would believe that Wagstaff is worse.

This is very unexpected, to be honest. I didn’t expect to see animation today, but I’m even glad. The art, as always, is on the level, and I also liked that the animation revealed the essence of Wagstaff’s personality. He didn't save the person, but he saved the Projector. I also love the references to past animations, such as Maxwell's performance on that Projector tape. Thank you Klei for making us happy like this :)

Worth noting first mention of Wagstaff was all the way back in 2013, on the forums: "The radio is a Voxola PR-76, manufactured in 1919 by the Voxola Radio company of Sidney, Ohio. The radio offered revolutionary sound and reception quality for the time, and was promoted by an intense national marketing campaign. Very few units were actually produced, because the factory was destroyed in a fire only days after production began. Voxola founder Robert Wagstaff went missing the night of the fire, and the company declared bankruptcy soon thereafter." This is 1906, obviously. He has 13 years from here to establishing the factory. We know from Interference that Wilson found one of his prototypes (presumably The Prototype). What else is he doing in that gap?

Interestingly, we now know that like 40 years ago, during Maxwell’s performance, Wagstaff already knew about Constant. I wonder what the scientist has been doing all these years, and why he became interested in Constant. Maxwell, meanwhile, dragged Wendy away to Constant a couple of years later. And Wendy wanders and dies in this world for decades without aging. About 5 years later, after Wendy, Maxwell took Wolfgang to Constant, and another 20 years later, Maxwell took Wigfried.

I really love Wagstaff being depicted as so selfless up until he returns home. I realized that he was just doing this for his own benefit the moment I saw the stage - he had just come there so he could steal whatever was left from Maxwell's magic show

As someone whose not familiar with Wagstaff's lore, this short was genius. Seeing him help others is like, "okay, he seems to be a decent guy." Then you see him running out with the camera and it's a little odd but like, "Okay, maybe he couldn't help the guy and is trying to see what happened." THEN he empties all the stuff onto the table and you're hit with whiplash like, "Oh. No. No, he's definitely a greedy jerk." Going back and rewatching for the moments he takes things too because it was straight up right there in front of you but don't notice the first go round is honestly just great. Takes me back to Brain Games where they had the guy asking for directions the entire time and then afterwards they reveal, "Cool. You remembered the directions. But did you notice the guy getting robbed?"

Interesting. At the time he learns of the existence of the Constant, he appears to be in about his 40s - 50s. Judging by the way he looks at present, it's been only around a decade up to present time. Meaning that he went from a jobless grifter to a learned scientist in a reasonably short span of time. This backstory also reframes Webber's short, as the spider sent to his father might not have been a gift to a research partner, but merely selling some of the Constant's curios for cash, which might have been necessary to fund the Voxola start-up. And furthermore, now that we know where he came from, what does this mean for where he's going? Does he have a genuine reason to delve into the heart of the Constant? Or is it merely in search of further profit (his company did go bankrupt, after all). Though considering his advanced age and his apparent withdrawal from society, I have to assume he's found something worth looking for besides material wealth.

Wagstaff is clearly a thief or at least a kleptomaniac. You can see him stealing the pearl necklace of the old lady, the gold ring of the man with the top hat, the walking cane and pocket watch of the man with the bowler hat and the recorder from the stage worker. It is also implied that he chose to steal the recorder instead of helping the stage worker but this is not known. Judging by his patched up clothing, poor living/working conditions and him scavenging trough trash, it could be concluded that he is poor (although he still manages to own a car) so it might be that he started stealing because of poverty or he is simply a greedy man. He is certainly very skilled at stealing judging by him coldblooded stealing from victims of an earthquake while being in peril himself but at least he saved (most) of those people even if it was for his own gain.
