Before renting an apartment, you NEED to know these three things. Firstly, even before signing your lease, always be sure to take a final walkthrough of the apartment and inspect the entire space for any pre-existing damages. Be sure to take pictures of the existing damages as proof for when you terminate your contract and need your security deposit back. Next, if you’re ever given a month’s rent free, or any other kind of discount, pro-rate the amount towards your lease term. This way, your monthly rent will be lowered and you’ll actually be saving a couple hundred dollars on your total rent for the year. And finally, when ending your lease, always bring up your forwarding address so your landlord can return your security deposit. These 3 things will save you a lot of time and money, especially if you move around a lot.

We are living in an apartment in NY for 13 plus years and lease end by 2024 April. But we found a cute home to rent. Current apartment is under moms name and she is a senior citizen with dementia. We are planning to leave by this December 30. Submitted Dr. Letter to apparentment management. Verbally lady told us we wont get security deposit and two months rent and $750 for breaking lease. Total $6000 which is a big hit for me. Anyway to bring this money down. I have rental insurance here. I have to pay advance rent and agent fee for new home too.

As per the lease provisions you can not apply the free rent and prorate it towards your lease term and you can walk the apartment before you sign the lease but yeah most apartment complex will trick you to sign the lease and then walk the apartment.
