    I have 2 subs with 2 different sized cones (10" & 12") 4oo watt rms total], however , my room is only 10' X 10'; very small. As a result bass management becomes a huge issue so I raised them off the floor on thick foam cartons I had from packaging It made a big difference! the low freq. is no longer boomy and sounds really tight much like a punch to the mid section the detail is more pronounced and interaction between the higher freq. seems more in tune allowing me to hear things I've never heard before.

    Thank you so much great information. I bought (2) 15” Wharfedale Subwoofers and used the thick foam that came in the box and I set my subs on top of this thick foam, about 3 inches off the floor.. And I also placed foam under the Subwoofers all around, at the front, in the middle and at the rear,basically to get them off the tiled floor, and add extra support and for the foam to actually be used as a cushion.. I personally think that this did help.. But it would be great also to take your advice and raise them much higher.. This is also beneficial because all that Bass will then hit you in the middle of your body, whereas if your subs are on the floor, the Bass waves are being lost ..

    Hello, if you can, please guide me in setting up my first 5.1 surround sound system(samsung htj4500). Room dimensions: 10ft x 12ft x 9f I have a 47 inch TV on the 12ft wall, dead in the centre & it is 41 inches from the wooden laminate floor. Where would be the best place to place my speakers and subwoofer? I have seen a few set ups where the 4 speakers habe been hung in each corner, facing each other diagonally, at around halfway up the wall, is this a good way to do it? A friend advised me to hang the 4 speakers in each corner BUT right at the top by the ceiling, is there any substance in what he advised? From my research I have assumed to place the tweeters to the side of where I am seated and the front speakers next to the TV, around 6 feet apart, and the subwoofer on the floor. Any advice will be welcomed.....specific height/width etc will be appreciated.... what would you place your subwoofer on?

    Hi Mike, You have two options, each with their associated costs. You can build a barrier between the sub and your neighbors. This process involves measurements, materials, and construction. It is a permanent fix and costly. Materials and labor can exceed $40/sq.ft. Your next option is to place sound absorption technology close to the source. Here are links to our carbon technology that has the required horsepower to deal with low frequency issues. The first is our DIY build plans for our diaphragmatic absorbers. You can build our technology yourself. The next links are our production units. You will need multiple units no matter what option you decide: www.acousticfields.com/product/diy-bass-absorber-build-plans-bda-broadband-diaphragmatic-absorber/www.acousticfields.com/product/acda-12-studio/www.acousticfields.com/product/acda-10-mini-studio/

    When i have two different sizes of speaker and placement playing the same frequency it helps to change the subwoofer phase either in your amplifier or on the back of the sub itself. It helps keep them from creating an out of phase effect. This doesnt always achieve better results depending on the room and the placement.

    what if the sub is dual drivers in opposite direction, is it better to eliminate the vibration ?

  • @AcousticFields

    @AcousticFields

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi Muataz, The operative word here is minimize. Dual drivers do minimize vibrations and other internal cabinet resonances but never eliminate. Driver movement will produce speaker cabinet resonances from one or two drivers. That internal driver movement along with the internal cabinet resonances or modes (cabinets are really small rooms) need to managed with the proper treatment technologies.

    P, There is no such thing as an acoustically transparent screen. Two things happen when you place a screen in front of a speaker. First, certain frequencies are attenuated based upon screen material and thickness. Secondly, the dispersion array of the high and middle frequency drivers is distorted. There is no free ride in acoustics. I would have to know much more about your room to assist you with speaker positioning. Give me WHL.

    Does the QSC 212 Cardiod sub mitigate these vibrations somewhat? As far as I can tell it mitigates the rear but perhaps the energy gets to the floor. My senses tell me no... I can place a laptop or anything on that sub even when its placed flat on the floor and there are almost no vibrations in the cabinet whatsoever even run at near unity (3200 watts). Does this mean the energy is mostly traveling directly out the front ? All other sub cabinets I have experienced vibrate.

    If that reduces the sub's output at all frequencies you might as well just turn down the sub's volume instead. If it's highly frequency-selective material you could achieve its effect via EQ. The point of bass absorption is to tune the room, not the sub itself, and that's why it's normally placed at specific hotspots in the room, not on the sub.

    Hi Skizzarz, Yes, isolation from any surface with a vibrating low frequency device is always welcome . I have built home theater rooms where the sub woofers are on winches and lower from the ceiling and arrive at different calculated heights when extended. The cables isolate from structure and the varied heights smooth out response. I was also able to sync the movement of the subs, screen, and window shades so everything moved in unison. I have also built rooms where a flat ceiling will open up by splitting in the middle and each section pulled towards the side walls to form more volume for theater applications.

  • @AcousticFields

    @AcousticFields

    Hi Ram, With sealed units you have just cabinet materials , construction methodology, cabinet volume, and driver diameter producing the sound you finally hear. With ported, you have all of the sealed speaker components plus the port producing sound. Getting "port" sound to sound good is not an easy task. It all depends on the engineer's ability to get port sound to blend with the rest of the cabinet. I have not heard many ported speaker designs that can accomplish this feat.

    If you need to use 12" of isolation to decouple, your subwoofer is crap. Cabinet vibrations are tiny compared to what the airpressure has. I agree than adding absorption directly under the sub is neat and logical but it is not for isolating the actual cabinet; 5mm worth of rubber will do that just fine. We only need to dampen the high velocity impacts that happen when a slightly vibrating rigidbody is bouncing on top of a static solid object. As for absorption directly under it, it is good advice.

    Providing low frequency absorption, vibration management, and room position are the objectives. A 12" depth in a diaphragmatic absorber will ensure absorption in the 30 Hz. frequency range. I already have the PC on the desk directly above the subwoofer and haven't had any issues. I was trying to raise the subwoofer height using the room environment. I can't raise the subwoofer under the desk as it'll hit the desk. I thought a solution might be to place the subwoofer on the desk underneath some foam.

    DO ISOLATION PLATFORMS WORK WITH DOWNFIRING SUBS SUCH AS REL T9X?

    With a sub platform you want to do three things. First, you want to elevate the sub off the floor. How far depends on ceiling height. Secondly, you want to absorb excess energy from the sub cabinet. Thirdly, you isolate the sub from transmitting more vibrations to the floor. Our sub platforms satisfy all three objectives. www.acousticfields.com/product/subwoofer-platform-absorber/

    Hi ! I have mine on the floor, in the corner of the room. What would be optimal ? Put it on a chair and closer to the middle of the room ?

    Never place a low frequency energy source in the corners of any room. All you are doing is creating more room distortion. Start at room center and move 12" right then left. Move back and forth. Spend time listening at each position change. Elevate the sub off the floor by 18". Report back to us the initial results.

    @@AcousticFields Wow! it really made a huge difference just moving it around and listening. Im baffled. I can honestly say the sound is probably twice as good, as compared to before *while having it in the corner). I had no idea it would effect the sounds that much. Thanks alot you really saved me :D !!!

    Whats the 12" structure ?

    Hi A, The goal of any low frequency device is to raise it off the floor and to minimize floor to sub woofer contact and reduce surface to surface vibrations. Second, we want to absorb as much energy as possible, as close to the source as we can. Both of these objectives can be accomplished using our sub platform. Is there a massive difference between putting subwoofer on floor properly to hanging them properly from the ceiling?
