as a person rebuilding a collection that I had to sell when i was broke, this is a great time to be buying my comics back!

It's very difficult to time the bottom. I am still waiting on the sideline for a few key books.
Golden-Age superhero and pre-code horror books have made substantial gains in value in the pasts 6 years with decent demand. In the 50 years I've been in the hobby, there's been lots of ups & downs, but there always seems to be a segment of the hobby doing OK. Given time the emphasis will shift once again to other books. We got spoiled due to the covid spike (all collectibles) and now we've had a big correction due to disenchantment. The smart ones will scoop up the deals & reap the rewards later.

Pre code horror really interests me, because there is also not other media attached to it. Just organic collector interest in great old books with amazing covers.

You are so right about the Golden age and horror books many just keep going up. It is now when the market is down that collectors should be buying and holding on if they can afford it. If you buy a comic for the pure enjoyment of owning it and nothing else you will never go wrong.
I just went to your website and bought Ultimate Fallout #4 second Print. I used the code so got it for $135.00. How could I pass up a first appearance of Miles Morales for that price! I actually like how you can see his face on the 2nd print.
Unfortunately, I do believe it's on its way down to the point where most of the buyers and sellers stop paying attention and put their collections back into the basement back room waiting for another decade where the cycle starts again. I am one who just missed the big boom by about 5 months. So after learning eBay, buying a press getting setup with various shippers and selling a long box or 2 of books - I think my collection will end up being "willed" to my grandson someday. Sorry for the pessimism, but I've been here since the early 70's and I see this coming. Guess I'll have to take out a loan for that new boat I was planning.

What we need is a 75th print of Detective Comics #27 with an embossed holofoil cover. That'll fix everything. But only if it's embossed AND holofoil.
@BoardRoomGamer

Can i get a lenticular variant of that embossed foil?
I bought my Captain Marvel 17 2nd print off the stand, cover price. I had it slabbed months later. Been in my collection since. I have a daughter and we love the first Captain Marvel film. Is it great film? No, but it entertains us and we have memories of enjoying it together. I regret not selling into the market, but even if I do, I'd still lock in profits.
A LOT of speculators have LOST 95% on their comic-book 'investments'. There's no coming back from that.

Thats what Im banking on, ill only be 138 year old so still youngish.
I think a lot of these comics could definitely still go lower. But, what do I know.
The multitude of factors eroding book values is so vast. We had the perfect storm for success in 2021--stimulus money, coming off of mostly really great movies and TV, the newness of Disney Plus on the heels of the great Netflix shows, boredom, the feeling like times are so troubled (Covid) and life is perilous that I deserve x, y, or z. So many things worked so well to tap into a hobby like comics and the nostalgia of easier times. But now we have the perfect storm for the exact opposite and I think a numer of things are going to have to shift directionally positive for numbers to universally start to rise again. It's inevitable that they eventually but, man, it's going to take a lot of things going right virtually all at once. I find myself holding back the books I love that may likely have value in the future--nothing like major keys or anything like that--and putting my emphasis on selling off the stuff that doesn't bring me joy. If you factor in inflation to these low sale values the opportunities for collectors couldn't be comparatively better. If I had pockets of any real depth right now I would be buying everything. Maybe next year things will improve in the market but there's a lot of s*** going down and until that all plays out we'll continue to have this chaos.

@coolworldpopculture Or, we could forget all that stuff, and just read comics for entertainment. 😁
So there's 18,000+ copies of UF4 on the census today. What happens to that number when CGC's 9.9 pre-screen comes, and people re-submit their books without giving the old label back to CGC so they can update the census (because almost nobody does that)? Same with ASM #4 (1st Silk) and EoSV2. There are SO MANY copies of these books out there and their census numbers will reach beyond what the real number actually is when 9.9 pre-screen arrives. I'd be considering selling my copies of these books now if I was holding on to it, unless they were my favourite characters and just wanted the book, value be damned. Note that I am not talking about the 2nd print of UF4 - I think there's tremendous value in that book given it's relative scarcity to the 1st print. Great video, Bryan!
The so called comic boom in the time of “free” money due to the Rona should not even be taken into account. A fair comparison of the health of the comic market is how are books doing compared to the year before the Rona.

Whole businesses went under due to inventory managers restocking for covid demand. Even Nike is sitting on a lot of overstock. The only thing saving Nike were all the thefts from depots that were conveniently at the same time they arrived from China.
For sure gonna hold on to my UF4 since I overpaid for it lol.
As a collector, comic book prices near zero is fine with me! Having said that, they won't go that low, but they may well become a non-viable business for many who now sell. This will lead to a huge influx of inventory being pushed on to the market and put downward pressure on pricing - another good thing for guys like me. Long term, comics remain collectibles, especially all the pre-speculative books (gold, silver bronze, and into copper). But as a good investment? Selective collecting may provide some form of investment protection, I would expect. But if you collect simoly to have it, like I do, any upside in price when the book is sold, if ever, is simply a plus. You used the words 'rare' and 'more rare' several times. No such thing for the vast majority of books from silver on. Several thousand of a title does not make it rare. Rare is measured as a handful or two, perhaps even 100 or so. Certainly not thousands and tens of thousands - graded or not. I can see an argument for fewer issues being harder to find and demand driving prices upward - but that is transient and based on speculation as much as any other driver. If you are looking for any book you will be able to find it as it will not be rare. Scarce and scarcer? Maybe. Few and fewer? Likely. Patience and refusing to play FOMO rewards the collector here, not the seller.

Yeah I should have said “relatively rare” or just “rare” as compared to the demand, something to that effect
Very informative video. I definitely enjoy collecting but also need to face facts about values. Glad i missed that crazy boom a few years ago.
I hate to say it but they might with collectors getting older and younger kids not reading comics.

Ehhh.. as a 25 year old and a seller within the hobby. I would safely say 25%-30% are younger than 18 that I sell too, around 30%-50% are between 25-45 and the rest are 45+. I have set up at Big shows and local shows and that's staying the same. I never grew up with golden age comics but yet that's what I collect mainly. I never grew up in the 60s,70s, and even the 90s , but I collected those comics from those decades that I personally never physically experienced. I DO NOT read new comics as that lack substance and way to political.
@everydaychallenges2282
3 ай бұрын
@Blacksheepcomics That is exactly what I mean only 25 to 30 percent are younger then when they start getting older it may drop to 15 to 25 percent in that age range.
All of the graphs look like speculation sales to me. If folks are treating these like a commodity, then when the market comes down (or crashes) it is either going to be a hard lesson learned or it's the price of doing business. Collecting and speculating are two very different things. Collect what you love and want to keep. If you're going to speculate, learn how to do it correctly as if you're buying stocks - treat it like a business. Just one old guy's opinion.
Great info. Updating my buy list. Thanks.
Always appreciate these videos. Especially with the market the way it is right now, It's good food for thought.
Appreciate the insights as always. I struggle with wanting to sell and lighten my collection but really want the market to come back a bit first.
Great video Bry!! Those prices are painfully low
The 1st Silk and 2nd print Miles sales for under or around a hundred seems insane to me. I do not chase owning more than one copy of a book, however with these books it might not be a bad idea to pick up a few. This was a fun list!
Thanks for the info. A few books I'd not have looked twice at, but now I'll grab them for the right price
Great vid. I just got into comic collecting as an adult late last year. Mostly collecting bronze age comics but I am interested in the modern keys you covered when I find raws of the 2nd prints for a decent price. Thanks for the great channel!
Probably best to just ignore the comic book prices like they didn’t happen
LOL,you know you’re getting old when you’re psyched over a good night’s sleep! This is a correction to the comic book market. I doubt Hulk 181, ASM 300, GSX 1 and the like will ever go to zero. IMO modern books in rare variants (thinking of UF 4 Djur…whatever variant, SIKTC, Star Wars, etc in low print runs by popular artists) will stabilize and hold steady. X-men mania could be pending…good reception of X-men 97 already, and an upcoming Wolverine-Deadpool movie. In the meantime, now is when you buy low. Comic book collecting should be enjoyable.

Agreed. People are way up to set on the negative aspects of life. Granted, most of them should as the economy sucks. There are now 3 wars going on. Gas, food, and immigration are at a all time high compared to previous years. $$ is getting tight, and the hopelessness of my generation is astonishing. I am 25, and I can tell you more people who have given up than actually are trying to better themselves. They realized working 9-5 for 40-50 years without a chance of retiring, working crazy hours with low pay, not even enough to afford food let alone a family does not sit well with the general public.

When you say amazing spiderman 4 has legs. Do you mean the book or the character 😮
I want to see the comic publishers to get back to getting comics into drugstores and supermarkets, bring back the spinner rack. Make them affordable and frequent. Prices down, buy buy buy. They will go back up as rarity hits. :)
Great advice, especially on that first Silk key!
Happy to see a buyers market. Great vid!
Ebbs and flows. I think this is how comics have always worked. Wanting to pick up some of these. Is it worth it to have one graded if you have it already?
Young Avengers is a great series but peeps were saying during the comic boom that it’s the modern Giant-size X-men 1 lolz
Some of these might recover, but I doubt they will reach anywhere close to those highs. I am just glad that I am not one of those people that paid top dollar only to see that huge drop.
I have a few of the books mentioned here and I get nervous when I see those numbers. I spend a lot on books I know won’t be keys. I need to save up a little more and grab these keys at these prices!
Hey Bry. Thinking Eternals on the small screen could still have a shot. With the various cancellations on diff.streams, some hedge bets might be needed.
Good stuff. I only have (had) one book off this list and I just happened to sell it a few weeks ago. Took a slight loss, but not huge. ASM4, just needed to cut my losses and move on! Realize now there are more than a few recent or modern books I bought since coming back to comics, that I probably should not have. I like the covers or the characters, but maybe I would have been better off spending that money on something else.
Good list of books! Thx for your insight.
You talked me into making an offer on the Ultimate Fallout 4 second print 😂
Love this topic. Great stuff Bry
Holding on to my Fallout 4 second print for a good while.
Thanks Bry. Those are solid picks on good “modern” books to hold. I have been watching most of those😂. Keep grinding bro!✌️
Wow. Surprising fall in prices. Thanks for sharing, Bry!
LCS’s closing left and right, prices dropping by 90 percent. Definitely dark days for the hobby right now. 😢

Every hobby tbh. My friend who collects vinyls and cards has seen the same thing. Classic cars, guitars, property, homes, and anything that was touched by a boomer are going to drop no matter what. You either stick with it and have faith or give up like the majority of people.
Glad I sold my copy of that Silk book when I did
Good video, I agree with a lot of this. Heck, I've bought about half of these in the last 6 months myself.
You should add Amazing Spider-man 546, including the 1:100 variant and Book Market editions. They've lost a huge amount of value but this is a great key issue and a possible entry point for the next Spider-man movie.
I think the boom will leave an indelible mark in some of the youngsters showing them the ability of being able to buy a book off 0:05 the shelf and if the movie/storyline matches the hype that it could sell for much more later on. This will linger and though it may take a couple years there will be more booms ahead. Especially if people, like yourself Bry, keep the content fresh and current. Good job 👍
Comic books have always held there value for 2 main reasons. demand and availability. I think books that have huge numbers on the census are always going to eventually fall after time. You take a book like GSX #1 full of first appearances , 1st time Wolverine in title. There is a ton out there. The book in a 9.0 you can get for less then$4000 now when it was selling for $6500 during the boom. You don’t see this drop on books with low census. Thanks for another great video Bry!

I ended up selling my GSX #1 CGC 9.0 for $10,000 during the boom, so that is a pretty big price correction. I haven’t been buying or selling as of late, so it’s good to know where things are at.
I just got an ASM 4 in my collection. Great book
Solid advice. Thanks again Bry.
Miles madness will happen! I’m holding and also trying to pick up more when I can. Great video man! Keep killing it!!!!!
I’ve got a couple on this list including CM #17 2nd PTG in a 9.8, and I’m definitely holding. I still think this is a 800-1200 book. And even tho one sold for 400, another sold for 850 days before.
First Knull I think in 3rd print could be a good pickup right now
Dang got a few of these. But at least I bought them before COVID prices.
I just bought UF4 2nd print from you earlier this month!
I did sell a 9.8 recently of Silk for $200 but I did keep the other copy I had. I was lucky i had them raw and they both got the 9.8. The covers just not awesome

I wish I would’ve gotten Into comics now while it’s at it’s lowest, instead of getting into them at it’s peak 😢
Collecting comics is like playing the stock market sometimes😂
Awesome advise!!!
I really think that the one thing is messing up the comic book industry is CGC. The 9.9 money grab that Blackrock is doing is crazy. The slab issues still have not been fixed, I am going to CBCS and staying there, the slabs are much more reliable and tamper free. How the rest of the industry is not screaming at the top of there lungs is insane. We just swept it under the rug while they ruin our hobby.
What is the strategy behind buying books at current market value? I'm generally curious as I'm a business student so I hope that that question doesn't come off as rude. Great video though! Silver and bronze age books in tip-top shape never disappoint in terms of ROI(minus the covid anomaly). Hell I'm even becoming a fan of low grade keys (minus the covid anomaly.)
Great video. Thx Bry
I knew I should of sold my Young Avengers #1 a while back ago.
Half the 9.8s on the 2nd print Miles from the 1st print....but the Pichelli has 1/4 of the 9.8s ....Those 2 should be hotter than the 1st print.....maybe it'll change one day. X-Men 94 was the book to have over the Annual for years I remember. New Mutants 87 was over 98 for years as well.
I still have my 9.8 ASM 4, but I wish I graded the 1:25 instead of selling it
We need to look at the boom as a one off anomaly, and look at the longer historical trajectory. It also took a lot of collectors out of the market (hopefully only temporarily), because they lost money on books they paid a lot for. Once Marvel is back on the right track (they already are with X-Men 97), things should start looking up again. Also, once economic and political uncertainty has passed that will help. Keep picking up good deals on great comics, and it will pay off in time with a great collection that has some value too.
I wish I sold all my books during the "boom," I could be getting them all again at 30 cents on the dollar,
Low print spawn from like 130ish to 260ish seem like good investments as a young character having books from only the 90's holding value like bronze Spiderman is a good sign
The direction of the MCU has killed the hobby
Great video Bry. How the mighty have fallen. I love the drop as a collector. I dont care what my books sell for 20 years from now.
Are you letting people know where you are in MT. ? I grew up in Kalispell Lived in Whitefish Graduated from Missoula And hung out in Bozeman Hope to visit you in MT one day
Modern books are rare in low grade. Therefore low-grade moderns should be worth TOP DOLLAR!!!
Mint Hunter said he's having trouble selling most of his slabbed comic books. People buy raw more. And we want a good deal. You need to sell raw books.
yeah, comics these days even some older ones you can get pretty cheap now. cause i think the movies they have had for titles like avengers captain marvel and so on have all made comic collecting hit a time of oh this used to be how much and i am getting it for only $20.00 ? wow. yeah, that shows how much the bigger investment in our hobby has hit a major snag. #ROADTO20K
Ultimate Fallout 4 Second Print 🔥
The economy is crap and inflation is making a huge dent in people’s lives. Considering inflation these books are even more wildly undervalued than it looks on the graph. I don’t think comics are dead at all, when the overall economy improves so will the comic market. Great time to buy if you can afford to.
I could see those books bouncing back
Well it is a good time to buy. Good for a collector.
Comics will continue to drop if the economy doesn't get better. I'm hoping we get a new direction next year.
My take on the current state is that it is a good time to be a buyer
Time to store my books in the attic again for another 20 years.
I want that Darth vader but I’m so happy I didn’t buy it at its height
Great video Bry! I wish I got a Ultimate Fallout 4 Second Print at $86.
I still dont get 2nd prints being worth more than 1st prints lol
There are always going to be swings in the market, do any of these particular books swing back up when the rest of the market does we won't know until we are there. If I had to pick one I would say that UF4 is the one that will stand the test of time as Miles is so ingrained into the zeitgeist of the upcoming generation.
The only one that surprises me on that list is first Silk. With no ongoing series featuring her, I guess there just isn't any love for her at the moment, but I love the character so if price drops more I'll load up on copies.
Good advice
For your sake, Bry, I hope comics don't go to 0 because you and the kids will be out of a job. All in all, I think sometime next year, comics will start going up.
Should I even slab my Young Avengers then?
Sadly I agree with you on the Eternals 1 book. The movie literally ruined the works of the late great Jack Kirby. I would also include issues 2 and 3 especially 2, the first appearance of the Celestials is one of the most under the radar comics in the market today.
Awesome video as always! Now gimme dat slab!!!
nice choices
I think "don't put it for sale if you're not selling it at fmv" is only true for bigger retailers and the wrong message for others. The books only go up if sellers hold their ground and wait for buyers to meet their price. We all want books to increase in value, even if we're not selling.
@BrysComics
3 ай бұрын
That’s a good point. I guess what I meant is don’t expect it to sell at an inflated price. But yeah high priced books is definitely good for getting fmv
Buy low, sell high.
Modern books are gonna be volatile 🤷
I've been bidding and occasionally winning at the linear trend line from before COVID. Return to the mean for most of the market.
Great vid!
Killing it as always
