    I really wanted to like the GR Corolla and in all intents and purposes, this is what we all wanted Toyota to do. Develop a hot hatch or have an all in house sporty car unlike the GR86 or GR Supra (love those cars even though they are a collaboration). The issue with the GR Corolla are the small production numbers and dealership markups ripping people off. Toyota obviously didn't want to produce too many otherwise the value goes down.

    I paid $55805 out the door to include a lifetime powertrain warranty and an additional 9-year warranty plan covering just about everything else with a $100 deductible. The additional coverage includes all electronics that could become pricey if an ECU goes or any other of the electronic gadgets. I plan on keeping my GRC a good long time. I also receive 4 years of oil changes and tire rotation for free. I really love the car! Today was the 1st time I was able to drive a GRC. Compared to my old 2004 Boxster S, the GRC has more to like. The GRC is an interesting concept, and Toyota's execution of this rally car is commendable. It is in some ways similar to my very inexpensive 2014 Corolla LE with a 6-speed. (I paid $16k out the door, new, back then.) The GRC is so much nicer and a bit more thirsty at the pump but all things considered I'm happy to have such a nice ride. Geico gave me a good deal on insurance, too.

    My issue with this car is the sweet handling (and slightly less practical) 86, which can be had for under MSRP and around 30k loaded. The Elantra N is 33k, and loaded. It feels special as well and about to be refreshed. This car is different (rally style) and more "special" but 42k is already pushing it a lot. That's before markups. Yikes, now I worrying whether I am the right type of person to have purchased this car. I think I am okay since this is my only car (unless I borrow She Who Must Be Obeyed SUV). At the moment my Circuit Edition looks decidedly less than Ice Cap white since it gets used every day (though not really exercised as Akio intended on my work commutes). To be truthful, I was trying to get a fully loaded Core, the Circuit being a little too showy for me (vent nostrils, huge spoiler, etc.) but I have got use to the look and I am telling myself that the car is another one of my many ongoing mid (and later) life crises. Getting to the car itself, I totally agree with everything Brian said including his main concerns about seat height and pedal spacing (not that I am a good heel toe down shifter myself). The GR Corolla forums are awesome and you can source after market adjustable pedal kits if you want to remedy the pedal spacing. Another negative is that the trunk space is not good compared to other hatches especially the Civic. The car is AWESOME to drive, just so confidence experience inspiring. One of the surprises for is how many different sounds the engine makes, very talkative compared the EA888 in my old GTI. I do hope that lots of owners use their GRCs as their daily, that is what hot hatches are about.

    Seems like the Japanese are purposely limiting production on the manuals. GR Corolla, Integra Type-S, FL5 Type-R, Civic Si... all of them are only offered in manual transmission, but potentials have to deal with long waits and mark-ups. Given that each of these car come from there own assemble line and less then 1 percent of North American buy manual cars, how is this happening?

  • @chrisginoc

    @chrisginoc

    10 ай бұрын

    They are purposely limit production because of the economy and interest rates around the world being at 20+ year highs. If GR Corollas flood the new car market, their value goes down. Manufacturers learned from the last financial crisis and during this recession (whether we are in one now or barely entering one), Toyota doesn't want new cars sitting on lots. It also doesn't help that dealerships are ripping people off.

    Can you turn off the nannies and slide it a little? I have a supposed RWD performance car that you can't turn them off. The all wheel drive system is so well resolved in the GR Corolla, that in the dry and the wet, it's just planted. I haven't tried it in the snow, but with the 30:70 torque split, you'd probably get a little power on oversteer. Yes, you can turn systems off. All the GRs are drivers cars and reward tidy inputs. On the Quadrafoglio model there is a race mode and you can turn the stuff off. They can't explain why it's unsafe to turn off traction control on a 280 hp car but safe on a 500 hp car. Go figure. For under $300 I think one can do the conversion to add the race mode switch to the 2.0 cars but I'm thinking that will void my 7 year warranty.

    "Toyota will end up with the wrong drivers in the GR Corolla" - This has been my biggest complaint, and fear, with the current hot hatch market. It ensures that dealers hold onto inventory longer than they should, especially in this economy, and ensures that when they are bought, they arent being driven to be enjoyed. But are being horded by a bunch of Boomers as an investment opportunity. Eventually, people will stop buying these cars, because the dealers have marked them up too high, and in turn, the manufacturers will not see the point im making them any longer. At the end of the day, i have no one to blame for this but Honda. They screwed over the North American market with their USDM Civic Si trim level shenanigans, all so they could charge twice as much for the same Civic Si features in the Integra. And then, of course, they manipulated the Civic Type-R prices at the dealership level, gouging them even higher still. At the time I made a prediction, that if/when the Integra Type-R/S came out, it would start at the gouged CT-R price, and be gouged for even more. Sadly, i was right. And as a result of Honda of North America playing market manipulation games to squeeze out a little more money, it has caused Toyota dealers to say "me too", and add that $10-15k USD premium onto every GR Corolla. And that problem is creeping into other product lines, as you are starting to see even higher price gouging on the Manual Supra then the original, and even seeing proce hikes on the GT86 now, too. Mostly thr manuals. Where previously the GT86 sold at MSRP, and manuals could be had with some insensitives. Not anymore. The only upside to this, is that there are plenty of Hyundai dealers still selling Elantra N's and Kona N's at, or below, MSRP. And every track day i go to, i see more and more Hyundai's. What i dont see...is CT-R's, IT-S's, or GRC's. Sad.
