@@josephvarela8966 Well the fact that something is common practice doesn't make it less funny... Picture Mr Bean as the pianist, trying to keep up with a couple of violinists completely ignoring him, as in this case, making faces all along. Hilarious Or much better, imagine Mr Bean is a mean violinist, starting and stopping randomly just to troll a very serious professional pianist trying to accompany him. There's a lot of potential there
When I was his student One day Heifetz brought a half size bow and told me to play with it. Saying since I don't use enough bow in general this half size bow would fit me. Ever since that embarrassing lesson I fixed the habit of not using enough bow. Deep thanks to Heifetz.

I love the sincere honesty of Heifetz. He calls the problem like it is, then helps the student solve it.
I feel like I am about to shit right into my pants while watching him teach many decades after his death. I cannot imagine being a student of him, trying to play right in front of him. Look at his attitude, he is one hell of a serious teacher.

My violin teacher is always positive and polite. He is never condescending, the way I feel that Heifetz was here. That student looked absolutely terrified. A teacher must instill confidence. This wasn’t it. What he should have done was slow the technique way down, and show the young man one note at a time, then get him to do it that way. I had a very rude trombone instructor when I was very young. I quit.

You can actually hear what Heifetz was talking about, without even being a classically-trained violinist. Just a difference in quality and experience.
He seriously WAS panicking… hahaha quite understandable 🫣😂

Great advice. Often fear makes us shrink, literally. Using more bow might help us feel more confident, and in this case also more rhythmic.
God's Fiddler, Jascha Heifetz. The greatest inspiration to any violinist. I will NEVER reach his level but I will always admire and aspire to improve because of him.
Heifetz always kept everyone in stitches with his zany jokes! Not known for his warm , open personality!
There is just no equal to observing a master of his art displaying the qualities of his skills with such ease and fluency. It is the purist and finest inspiration.
I must remember that: Panic is not a good feeling for the public to convey.

Great !
Try not to see student amd teacher here, but rather peer to peer. It's clear there is a mutual respect and not just one way. Quality is the pursuit and both parties are in that venture. It's clear to me anywaus
Heifetz even made that "creshcendo" sounding convincingly.

You can also use much too much bow because you are in a panic. Panic can cause many different unwanted mistakes.

Christopher Walken knew what he was saying when he said more cowbell

Mr. Heifetz required his master class students to go to his class as if they were having a recital. He kicked one student of his class for not following the dress code.
😍👏🏼👏🏼
Interesting how Heifetz holds the violin too: he holds it naturally so that it is at “an angle” not “right across” as you see a lot nowadays. Much more comfortable and stress free.

As a saxophonist, I approve this message! I even consulted with the great Ruggiero Ricci on Paganini's caprices. ❤ 🎉

The archery instructor:
Watch the documentary, "The Violin", and listen to what the great Nathan Milstein had to say about Heifetz.
The original “ more cowbell”. 🎉
What a teacher!!!!!!!
I would be terrified to just play in front of him
1:53 And then, Heifetz got... this run
Hehe. “More crescendo here. Which you didn’t do.” 😂
Who wouldn’t panic trying to play the violin flawlessly in front of the legendary Jascha Heifetz?
heifetz adage: “keep calm and carry on *with more bow* “ 😅
Qual foi o melhor aluno de Heifetz?
I was waiting for him to say more cowbell...
Definitely a more pinched sound with less bow.
Who was this excellent student?
Helping a student does not need to include redicule, sarcasm & other aggressive gestures. They really just re-enforce the Teacher’s own opinion of his stature. After 63 years of music making, I look back at my interactions with three dozen teachers, 5 on a long term basis, the others as a student player at masterclasses. I will say that the very best teachers are not always the best players. They are exceptionally good at reading a student & delivering what they need in a manner that gets immediate results while making the student eager for more challenges. Sometimes great players are just lousy teachers. Not to say you don’t learn from them but it’s best to sit in the back and hope you pick up something by osmosis. Occasionally you hit the jackpot & you get to work with one that is a fabulous player & a great teacher. We have it well documented here. Mr. Heifetz was not in that group.

@@JNaomic970 All teachers are human so not every interaction comes from their best intentions. They all occasionally push a bit too hard or at the wrong time. But to go to these lengths with a student in a public session being filmed is just unconscionable IMHO. There’s a natural power imbalance in a Teacher/Student relationship and it’s sad to see it abused like this.

If he had said more cow bell.....
Heifetz tells the student more bow and then to slow down, but then Heifetz can't help but speed up again in his demonstration. I'm not sure why he was so concerned with pace (haste?) in violin playing, his own playing was richer prior to the end of WWII, with more rubato and a bel canto quality (likely influenced by Kreisler).

😀 yah but nobody sounded like he did nobody. The student was very good though. I had an opportunity to study with him in 1981 and was accepted initially on recommendation by a teacher and asked to make a tape and also accepted due to photos that I sent however he required an audio tape of several things also. it would’ve been a great experience for me however may have been too sensitive. Unlike the student in this video who stoically took his criticism I probably would have been unable to take it. I didn’t end up being able to make that tape because it was a rough summer for me and on the list of things that he required was Paganini Caprice # 17 and I felt this particular requirement was too daunting, I wish I had dug my heels and just done the tape though because it could’ve been a great experience for me. I love Heifetz. I was in tears when he died.

A geração de antigamente era uma gerações de ferro os homens fortes e inteligentes.
I've rewatched this several times and I just don't see where everyone is seeing that he's being mean-spirited or ridiculing the student. This actually seems like a very normal violin lesson to me, at least having studied with a eastern European teacher. Maybe it's cultural difference? We're very soft with our students in America. I doubt I could ever be so stern, but I teach kids and teens who are playing for fun, so stem is not what I need to be. But at a higher level, lessons can be very workman-like. He's being very neutral and matter of fact. Blunt, uncharming, but not mean. Nothing he said would have embarrassed me or made me feel shame. I've been in lessons like that though, and this just doesn't seem to be one of those.
He has to make an effort to play bad
Sadistic teacher😢
Não só toca o correto como ainda consegue imitar o erro do aluno…
