With these 3 Amazing Drinks we will teach out how you can replace or substitute that hard to find Green Chartreuse with more commonly available, and much underrated Alpine liqueur alternatives. You'll go from home bartender to professional in no time with these easy and simple recipes.
Much has been said about Chartreuse lately. Seems like everywhere I turn on the cocktail internet someone is talking about this once obscure liqueur. Five years ago almost nobody but serious cocktail nerds paid much attention to Chartreuse, but in these last few years due to it’s rising popularity, and COVID related supply chain issues and apparently the monks who make it coming out to say that they will be making LESS of this spirit so as to focus more on Monastic life and duties. Not only is it incredibly hard to find, but it seems like it’s only going to get harder to find over time. Is this the cocktail world’s very next pappy Van Winkle? It might be! Will we soon be paying 1500 bucks for this stuff? I hope not! Luckily for us there are some great alternatives out there so today we’re Going to talk about what Chartreuse is, what we can use as replacements when that bottle of Green Chartreuse is too expensive or out of reach. And of course we’re going to make some cocktails with those replacements

Chartreuse production hasn't stopped. They just scaled back production 4 years ago and only announced it now. It's still being made it will just not be as often.
The title is a bit of misinformation. They haven't stopped production, they actually said they will not scale up production anymore to meet the growing demand so now Chartreuse is an allocated product.
I heard years ago that Tempus Fuget was trying to replicate Chartreuse, hopefully they're still working on that and can create a proper alternative.

You know my heart absolutely fell when I saw this video’s title, and while I’m still super rocked by this (chartreuse is my desert island only one bottle forever bottle) your comment did at least bring me some solace because yes, tempus will definitely show up, but dang :/
Total Wine carries a liquer called 'Ver' that's pretty close to Chartreuse, in a cocktail I use a tiny bit less and it replicates it fairly well. I always need to be able to make a Last Word!!!
@schmup53

My Total Wine sells that Ver for 52.99. Still a bit pricey.
For those interested: multiple distributors are only moving Chartreuse to bars / restaurants. It's likely retail stores will not be seeing them again. What I and my restaurant manager are doing is buying a case and splitting it with the liquor store across the street.

It's funny, I've only heard people talk about the chartruese situation, it's been exactly the same where I live. That is to say, rare as hell (only seen 2 bottles in 5 years) and insanely expensive (between 100 and 120 in store) Meanwhile yellow chartruese... doesn't exist, it's impossible to find in store.
Thank you so much for addressing this problem. Uncle Pete's Cocktail Shop has an episode on replacements as well.
Thank you! This is the video I’ve been waiting for since the shortage began. ❤❤❤
Great work incorporating the selling of the glassware right into the video. Nice and quick so people can't skip but also remind people they can buy them.

I bought them. They’re lovely.
I had a cocktail at a local place called Grapes and Soda, and I could have sworn it had green chartreuse in it, but it was just a mix of herbs and bitters. It had Savory, Cilantro, and quite a few other herbs that I wish I could remember.
This is the video I needed! Thanks 😀
What a great video. Thank you!!
I found a small mom & pop liquor store in Arkansas that had over half a dozen bottles of yellow chartreuse on the shelf for about $50 each. I plan on stockpiling.
This is just what I needed. I am WAY too cheep to buy Chartreuse to give it a try. I am looking forward to trying these out.
you are featuring Genepy Le Chamois, which is instead a Yellow Chartreuse substitution. My favorite bar ABV uses des Alpes for their Last Word which is delicious
I was just in Spain this week and they have so much Chartreuse over there that Chartreuse reps were in Two Schmucks making drinks and pouring shots of it. Every bar had it.
I tried a cocktail recently called a Bijou which I really liked. It's similar to a negroni but with chartreuse instead of campari. I had it with blood orange bitters and it was a really lovely drink.
I've been wondering what to do if I can't find Chartreuse (I still have half a bottle, and can order a couple more before it's gone) and have been asking around, and here finally a video on the topic. Thanks!
I buy it if I see it and fortunately haven't gone without yet but this is a great video. Much needed!!!
I like how you compared Chartreuse with Faccia Brutto. I'd be interested to see how the Pago Pago and Prince Henry Punch compared when you use Chartreuse in those (as opposed to using Centum Herbis and Genepy like you did in the video). Perhaps an idea for a couple shorts?
Thank you for this! I still have some green but been out of yellow for months and can’t find it anywhere.
Green Chartreuse still seem to be readily available at the Norwegian liquor monopoly. Then again, having a single supplyer for the whole country might make it easier to aquire
Many thanks for this video and all the other ones. I would like to know what do you think about Benedictine as a Chartreuse substitute ? Regards
Fun fact: the Love and Murder was named after “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” which won the Tony award for best new musical in 2014!
Cmon dude youre above clickbait like this. Theyre not stopping making it, theyre just halting increasing production

Hey Leonardo, another great informative and fun video! I've been a long time watcher (since 2019 to be exact). I know you are based in the US, thus the cocktail scene you're surrounded by would in the most part - be inspired by where you're from. I know you try to ensure that you broaden your scope, and present cocktails from around the world, (for example - Japanese cocktails) but i'd love to see more cocktail videos that are dedicated to around the world. I.e (I know this is biased), but I'm from Australia - we are taking the world by storm right now in the cocktail scene. We keep climbing up the ladders each year for best bars, best new bars and so forth. Other places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Barcelona, Lisbon, are all places that are also making cutting edge cocktails that deserve to be show cased on such an amazing channel like yours, with the audience that cares. It's just a thought - but would love to see more videos that highlight a broader scope of the current bartending scene. Still loving the content, and if you'd like a nudge in a good direction for the Aus scene in particular, would be happy to have a chat :) Cheers, Mel, from Melbourne, Aus - Whisky & Alement bar.

I might try making one without the simple. Now, to see if any local liquor store stocks Genepy ... I won't even hope for Charteuse.
I would recommend (if they still make it) Izarra. Very hard to find in the US, and not as complex as Chartreuse.

My Trsted supplier still has them, maybe time to stock another bottle (I am in europe, maybe its still easier here)
I wouldnt say its readily available in Canada but it shows up on LCBO shelves from time to time. If you live close to the border, do your research, might be worth a drive.
I almost purchased 6 bottles when I saw them, but I waited. I went back today to buy and I only saw one 😢
I found a bottle called Ver Liqueur for $45 that is a decent alternative
I can only get the 375ml of green chartreuse where im at but I can also get the yellow chartreuse 750ml, but theres under 500 bottles in the whole area of the green…
I appreciate the effort you put in to show alternatives and how they taste compared to chartreuse. I just wish the title of the video wasnt so misleading. I can understand that by reducing production its going to get harder and harder to acquire, but when I saw the title it seemed like that was going to happen quite quickly if they had fully stopped and people were going to panic buy/stock up on it.

I still had a bit of green chartreuse left when I got a bottle of Kloosterbitter a few weeks ago. Did a side-by-side comparison, both straight and in a Last Word, and it is VERY close. The best replacement I’d found previously was Ver liqueur, but it was noticeably different (more peppery, less rich). Kloosterbitter is *extremely* close to green chartreuse, nearly indistinguishable in the cocktail.

Genepy le Chamois gets all of the focus as a substitute but highly recommend Boomsma Claerkampster Cloosterbitter Herbal Bitter. Its by far the closest I have ever found to Chartreuse. Nice to see the frank tasting notes here, on both the balance of the drinks and the effectiveness of given Chartreuse substitutes! Unfortunately there don't seem to be *really* good 1:1 substitutes yet, as you found, which is interesting. If the monks really want to focus on their monastic life, maybe they should just license the manufacturing - or at least the recipe - to a trusted partner who would handle it well. Not some huge producer, but I'm sure there are some smaller, still "artisanal"/hand-crafted ones that would jump at the chance.
