@MrSpeed-do2zk on the contrary, it should be considered child abuse to raise kids in houston. The air quality is bad that one can’t even breathe there. It’s an environmental disgrace that needs to be wiped off the planet for global survival. The same can be said for many Indian cities and Mexico City. There is also a lot of petty and property theft there. It’s just a desperate coastal shithole. New Orleans but with buildings San Antonio is just like Houston but farther from the coast and hotter. Houston but *without* buildings and, in many ways worse but you can breathe there for now. Your best bet would be Austin and Dallas if you are going to Texas. All the important stuff happens in Austin or Dallas. CNBC finally slammed Texas as the worst state in America, it is dystopian

In my opinion, house prices will continue down as people leave the state and prices correct due to market pressure. The problem with Florida is the property taxes increased based on the boom and the cost or inability to obtain homeowners insurance. Florida's in for a rough 5 years imo.

The biggest hazard with Houston traffic is that you have drivers from all over the world, and they all learned to drive differently. That makes them unpredictable. Compare that to New Jersey and New York. There, everyone drives very aggressively, but since they all drive aggressively, they're predictable.

Houston is tucked into a southeast corner of Texas, on the Coastal Plain. Texas is HUGE: different soils, widely different average rainfall totals, different average temperatures, different bugs/spiders, different utility delivery systems, and different local customs. Even the local accents in different regions are different.

I'm from Twin Falls, Idaho. I hated our 7-month winters. I moved to Houston in 1979 and have been warm and happy ever since. My birthday is in April, and I always wanted to go swimming for my birthday. Not in Idaho! Shoot, you're lucky if it's warm enough in May. But, as for Houston, I see it as the world's largest small town. I know that sounds odd but, each Zip code has it's own flare. The people are amazing! It makes living here worth every penny. I'll never forget my first day here, stepping out of the car after a 38 hour drive, I stepped in Fire Ants. Welcome to Houston. :)

Maybe the problem is the 3 of y’all. I was born and raised in Houston, so I do drive fast. If you’ve been rear ended several times, drive faster or stay in the right lane. Get out of people’s way. I love driving in Houston. Everyone drives 10 mph over the speed limit. If you can’t handle it, take the bus. My guess is that Downtoearth, Pickles, and Yosteve are older people who were not raised in Houston, nor did they learn to drive there. If they were from Houston or had learned to drive there, they wouldn’t have any complaints. Now that I live in Austin, I’m always beyond annoyed with people who actually drive the speed limit or slower. I don’t have all day to leisurely drive from point A to B.

Lastly, every sub-division has an HOA. HOAs are huge in Texas, and the state gives them way too much power. The boards can get out of hand. If you move into a new development, it will be several years before the HOA is turned over to the residents, and the management companies need to be more responsive.

@@kathyfugere6085 I'm not sure who created the concept. In newly built neighborhoods, the HOA can take years to transfer to the residents if they ever are. Many new build areas come with contracts that state the HOA is in the hands of a permanent company and never transfers to residents. Many of those companies manage thousands of HOAs and never respond to any of them unless they take enforcement actions. I hate that they end up with more power than some local governments.

We used to run our own HMO until one President courted a Management Company and we’ve been stuck with one company after another since. We were lucky the first Manager had a rental home in the property and he personally visited every other day. He responded quickly to complaints like a landlord. He also kept our maintenance fees lower than the surrounding complexes. However, as soon as we hired a management company our monthly fees increased by 33%. He closed his business and moved to Conroe after 15years and it’s been awful with the two companies who followed. This latest one doesn’t even respond to calls or emails and has no personal contact with anyone except to complain. Our President had to fight with them to pay for my shattered window replacement that was caused by a pebble from the landscapers’ leaf blower. It took months to be finally reimbursed and at first the Mgmt company refused to take responsibility saying the windows were our responsibility. The fees keep increasing each year and our services and landscaping decreases. They just brought us in line with their other properties and regularly charge “assessments” as much as $200/month on top of our regular fees. We were 4 years with the last one and as soon as it was finished our regular monthly maintenance fees rose. I was paying more for my maintenance fees than my mortgage and there was no relief from that during Covid whatsoever. A nightmare.

Hi, I'm a native Texan who was born in Houston. I now live in North Texas near the OK border. As a female, tell your wife not to bother curling her hair because the humidity will instantly make it straight as soon as you go outside. Sometimes the humidity is 100% and will hang in the air like a wet blanket as compared to Denver where there is dry heat. The temperature can be the same but Texas will feel hotter because of the wet heat. Also, always use 50 SPF sunscreen even if the sky is overcast. Things that can "unalive" you next. A good idea is to know the symptoms of heatstoke. Keep well hydrated in the hottest months of July through September. Carry water with you. Crazy drivers are here, I learned how to drive a stickshift, back in the day, on the 6-10 loop by myself. Yes, I was either brave or stupid, maybe both, but with cars whizzing past me at 90 mph, I did learn how to transition the gears and work the clutch smoothly with the brake and accelerator. One bit of advice, drive defensively. If someone is tailgating you in the fast lane, kindly move to the next lane because drivers are tailgating that driver, and so on. It's just a common courtesy. If someone has road rage, move away from them, and do not engage. Nowadays, everyone carries a gun and may use it. Houston is a floodplain. If there is a watch or warning for floods, heed it very seriously. I have seen fatalities of people who did not know. Water can build up very quickly. Head to high ground immediately and under no circumstances drive through the standing water underneath underpasses. Hurricane season starts around September. Again, take these seriously, if you are told to flee, do it. You might want to keep bags packed for times like these depending on how much notice you get. I have been through multiple hurricanes. When I lived in Dallas, coyotes were abundant. They fearlessly walk the streets in the daytime. Be careful, they are wily. They may act like they going away from you, but if you walk away to get in the house, check over your shoulder to see where they are because they will be running at you. If you have small pets, get them inside ASAP. At the risk of this comment turning into a novel, I will stop now. Sorry it's so long. Welcome to Texas!

As a Texan, I can say that many people don’t need to be chatty to be capable. You want something? Ask the question. It’s not rude. It’s patience and courtesy. The allergies suck. It’s freakin hot. Outrageous power bills …because, ITS FREAKIN HOT. Crying about heater and ac drains…. You can’t maintain your home ? “But I don’t want to. Why are the attics so hot?” 😂 because it’s freakin hot. Thunderstorms and hurricanes? Never heard of em huh? Property taxes. Yep. We all hate it. Don’t move somewhere before doing your homework. Plus, it’s hot. Traffic? Construction? You don’t have that anywhere. The buildings and roads just grow out of the ground everywhere else. Houston drivers? Yep. Everyone knows. Bugs and mosquitoes? Only tropical rainforests are worse. Mud daubers, black widows, gators, hogs, Aggies ? Never watched wild kingdom? Contractors? Yeah, do your research. Again? Intense heat. Yeah, it’s hot. Houston is on the same latitude as the North African desert countries. Not sarcasm. It’s super hot AND HUMID. Red ants. Yep. Avoid em. SNAKE ! 😂 Avoid the poison ivy, poison oak, chiggers, horseflies, paper hornets and yard Nazis ( overbearing HOA’s)

I was born and raised in Texas, and you couldn't pay me to move to Houston. Well over half of the population of Houston most likely come from out of state, if you want to retire in Texas it is a big state central, or West Texas are places to look into. Just remember many of the families in these places have roots that go back a hundred years, or more far more, and men there have strange ideals about land, fences, shotguns, daughters, and the family Blue Healer.(Not necessarily in that order).A man I know got tired of seeing the Metro-plex slowly creep across the country side towards his home, so he sold out and bought a ranch five countries farther West .One day he was going around his fence ,and met his neighbor doing like wise ,they got to talking, and he ask "You have much trouble with cattle thieves around here"and the neighbor said "Haven't had no trouble seine Grampa and the boys hung three of them back in nineteen twenty-four Texas is not just Houston.By the way put yor water heater in your garage, and use copper lines ,and your AC behind your house.

Property taxes is significant, have to hire a company to fight it for you as HCAD laughs at you if you try to fight it yourself. High home taxes did prevent a real estate crash couple decades ago as normal people cannot afford to pay double taxes when houses double in price. BUT no state income tax, this is one reason why state income tax isn’t needed.
