I think you nailed it with this video! Another critical use for feathering braid from a spinning reel is when you are using a popping cork. You can get the lure on the cork to lay out and land just before the cork, and straighten out the line also so you can start popping the cork, especially when it is windy. Often fish hit right away and if you don’t feather, you don’t get that fish. I proved this last week on the Texas flats big time!

Great information, I see lots of anglers that have no idea how to set drag to not break line. I have been known to frequent 4 to 8 pound test and pulling in fish 15+.

Hooked an 80lb tarpon last week on 10lb braid fishing for other fish. Didn’t land it since was on a #1 light hook with 30 lb leader, but was one hell of a fight on full drag 2500 shimano spin reel with 100 yard smoking runs before leader broke at hook. 10 lb braid held strong.

Yes, once again it’s hard to put more than 10 pounds of unrelenting pressure on a fish especially with a rod designed for the flats

I'm with you on the 10 lb braid. I use it 99% of the time. Between a medium action and a medium light 7 rods with 10 lb braid I catch almost all my fish. Most of the time I toss jig heads and soft plastics or weedless rigs and soft plastics (Texas Eye, SnakeEyes), sometimes with a popping cork. With those two different action rods I can do all that or toss plugs. I have a 15 and a 20 lb braid rigs but don't use them much. 10 does it for me until I hit the pier for cobia. Then 20 and 40 come into play.

You definitely got it right. Unfortunately almost every trip I will at some point be targeting large snook on the docks on the intercoastal here on the east coast. Like you said you just can’t give them an oz of drag or it’s over with heartbreak 😂

Really good video, CA. Doubling the line at the end of the braid to leader connection is a fantastic idea. I hear that knot going through the guides on my casting gear all the time and I’m really looking forward to seeing if balancing the knot will reduce that.

I can say for beach fishing: Pompano/redfish/drum/whiting don't care about the color of your line. I have 20lb (due to flinging 3+ oz weights on 12 and 15' poles) bright orange line. Pelicans, jetskis, swimmers, and boaters can see it. Go high vis (neon yellow/pink/orange) and you'll get less morons in your line.
