Fun Fact: When the web series was new the creators said that every DHMIS theory was correct and at a convention when a fan asked a question on the misconceptions on art and they literally said That you can interoperate art how ever you want even if it's not how the original creator intended.

ive seen some people complain about the new series being not as scary, but to me, as someone incredibly desennsitized to gore (i got injured very often as a kid, and we also had a cat that got us lots of dead rats and birds) the new one is so much more scary in a cosmic sense. i mean, the job episode?? the intense, looming fear about being stuck in an unimportant, unpassionate workplace for your entire life? literally something i loose sleep over. guts and othe organs being shoved around? something i barely flinched at even at twelve years old, let alone now

that's why the computer episode was my favorite of the original. Gore is just "oh look that's shocking I guedd, hey now it's over" but the idea that every moment you have ever lived is one more second of your finite existence slipping by and yet you're no closer to grasping the vastness of existence, and at the end of your life anything you've accomplished in organizing the chaotic hell of reality will die with you and inevitably anything you had any impact on will also fade away... yeah that's what kept 6 year old me up at night. you can take classes to fend off Jason, you can prepare for a Twister. And they do such a good job of being like, creepy and unsettling in the new show. I watched it with my roommate who hadn't seen the web series at all, and during the last couple episodes he couldn't understand why I kept getting really surprised and impressed at how the horror shifted to be more of the eerie uncanny variety. Leslie in particular is so genuinely creepy to me that I don't mind her inclusion at all, I think I'd be upset over the heavy handedness of the last episode if the actress and editing weren't elevating it so much. (But then again maybe I'm just easily spooked by uncomfortable laughter and sudden mood shifts)

One thing i loved and found really funny and interesting is the heavy implication that the whole plot of ep 1 was just a normal everyday dhmis song about jobs that just happened to lag in that particular place and they all just got stuck in that bit until the song finally finished. My favorite episode is probably the transportation one, specifically because of how they handle red. They make it clear when he explains what a community is that he doesn't fully 100% get what he's talking about, but he's smart enough to know that their daily life of dying repeatedly isn't normal. All the little things like mentioning he wants stuff that doesn't come alive, or mentioning that Grolton always ends up back at home, or throwing all the sudden new characters out the window so they can't interrupt. Him keeping it secret is more than just holding back from the audience, since he doesn't know we're watching, but rather implies that he's trying to protect the other two/knows that if he just blurts out the truth they'll probably freak out and then die in some gruesome way since that's how these things normally go. The whole episode leans into the more meta/mystery aspects of the show without going full bore lore dump (not that I dislike episode 6 though, it went so hard) and keeping a more traditional episode feel, sort of adding the mystery element to the other underlying feelings of uncertainty rather than bringing it front and center.

I watched this twice now, and I saw something interesting I'd like to point out to those who do love speculating. SPOILERS. If you rewatch the last episode, when the Duck first asks for help with the crossword puzzle, Yellow goes on a long, nonsensical sentence (which is funny because the obvious answer is "up.") However, it's actually a dead ringer for the actual nature of their reality, albeit describe by yellow. That, along with the woman's comment about how she always has backups and the pictures of yellow on the stairs, implies that he's been down with road of discovery before and maybe even made the same decision to shred all the answers before.

Honestly I think the overall story is based around Yellow Guy. It’s about a child learning to take in the world and all the oppression they face and the difficult lessons that they’re expected to learn. Throughout the show, Yellow Guy is known as “stupid”, and they always belittle him for it, often leaving him confused. Then in the last episode, Yellow Guy suddenly “grows up” and the others aren’t ready for it. They’re even upset, because he’s proven to be something greater than them, which I’m assuming Red Guy and Duck are taking on the roles of a narcissistic or toxic family. Another example would be the transportation episode. Yellow Guy actually knows how to operate the movie screen thing, but Duck shuts him down. This happens a lot in real life, from what I’ve been through anyway. Of course there’s other things but I love this theory the most.

The original series had a story that was told through symbolism and metaphors, so each episode wasn't really a "Story" as it was a puzzle. Which is fine and good, and pretty interesting. But the new show had characters with personalities and ambitions, reacting to things in different ways and making comments about their situations and surroundings. There's actually a story and a plot in each episode, and as a fan of the original series it caught me off guard. Ironically, the more normal structure of the show is weirder to me than the old show was. Great show, 12/10, would watch again.

And food requires money, so they use all these things to bait us, the more they "bait" us with questions, the more the fandom grows. Questions are good, as long as the answers are satisfying. I love the point you make about the foreshadowing, bcz they do it so much and it's so fun, the shredder gets a short musical number before it is used on the end to shred the book with all the answers, The Eagle is mentioned on the death episode's newspaper mentioning him being fired due to harassment, small things like these build a story so well. Also the Family episode is my favorite bcz creepy twins and creepy family are such a fun trope and this was so original, a small man being kidnapped and forced to be the new mom, a family that only is a family so they can get family discounts, the fact that the baby is actually the father, it's all the most batshit insane take on the creepy family trope. And there's also stuff like Bird insisting Red is his best friend in Death, Red missing him so much he makes a new one, Duck calling himself the father of the house and is about to call Red something else b4 he's cut off, the fact that they're often jealous when the other is getting attention, Red attacking Yellow after he's hurt Bird, and the "I like looking at you" scene on the final episode, it's just really fun character building and I'm super not obsessed with those two and their relationship.

There's a difference between a show having a progressive storyline with world building and an ARG. But I disagree with him that people were playing an arg to begin with. DHMIS, at least the original, didn't spoon feed you anything and left most of its story up to interpretation. So for the people that wanted the story they had to dig out a lot of little details and try to fit them into a narrative. That's not exactly what I would consider an ARG. That would be like calling surreal movies like inception ARGs because you might not catch everything on your first watch. I also find his interpretation of the ending a bit off. Seeing multiple layers of the house, a weird conversation with a character and a book of lore seems to point to the exact opposite of the show trying to say we should only enjoy the surface level of it all.

  • @SisterRose
    @SisterRose Жыл бұрын

I think at the end, I don't really see it as a refutation of the theorising so much, though it was definitely meant to be a tease towards that crowd. It's more a part of the overall theme of them being trapped, the claustrophobia and lack of choice and free will they have and how their information is so heavily controlled. If they didn't want more theorising, they wouldn't have had Lesley or foreshadowed her in the previous ep, which was obvious set up - not to mention the open door next to her, but had another puppet character or version of the main cast give him the book. It very much continues the little teases that were in the web series - particularly the virtual reality aspects, which we see in the original episode but also with regards the machine at the end and the teachers glitching in and out. I feel like there will be some relevance in terms of the machine we see at the end of the original series, especially knowing there's more to the world, an upstairs even for Lesley. I don't expect the theories people have right now are particularly close, though.

And all the while yellow guy was so eager to know more up until he gets to presumably would be the author then is handed what is presumably the author's true intent. But in the end, it's shredded. Showing that it really doesn't matter what the author intended and that it's ultimately up to you. Interviews with the real creators actually confirm that they like leaving it up to the audience. you hit the nail on the when you talked about dhmis theories. in thread about people wondering that the last episode of the web show was "no longer cannon", I saw a comment that quoted "at the end of dhmis episode 7, we see that Roy was the creator of the show" bitch, no we didn't. what we DID see is red guy walk up to a giant machine, and Roy extending a comically large arm to him. that's literally it. the idea of "cannonicity" scarcely exists in this show. in fact, the concept of time as we know it doesn't really exist. the show is made impossible to theorize on purpose. it's like trying to make a theory about all salvador dali paintings. and when a new one comes out, you say "ah so I guess The Hallucinogenic Toreador is no longer cannon. shame"

Also, as far as theory videos or video essays go, I really like your format where you alternate between video clips that prove your point and then actually looking at you talking in your chair, talking in a more conversational non-scripted way. It is easier for me to pay attention to and makes it feel more like a conversation than listening to someone read what they scribbled on a word document while watching unrelated clips. As much as I love over analyzing the show there isn't anything wrong with just enjoying it. I've seen some people say the spreading of the book was symbolic of the writers saying there are no real answers, to be honest I hope it stays that way. One of the biggest pulls of the show is the sense of unease and mystery. If the show eventually explains what's going on, it might not feel as special... Idk. I just know I love this series and I'm looking forward to season 2

This is exactly the sort of video I wanted coming off the high of the last episode - someone's fresh but organised thoughts and just a reinforcement of why I enjoyed it myself. There definitely seemed to be a lot of the 'don't read too deep into it' and I agree that the show should be allowed to be enjoyed without hours of analysis of every little thing, but I definitely do think there's a fair bit lying underneath, both in the original (notably how it's always father's day until the end) and in the new one (one note I saw that I thought was interesting was that in yellow guy's dream, the narrator, who seems to be Lesley?, seems audibly distressed when he gets hit by the car, indicating there may have been a 'real' event in her life this is referencing? This could be reinforced by her 'you're not my real son' outburst but that is also played off as a joke in the moment. Idk, but I'm interested in what other theories will come out of it)

Another comment on here mentioned something I found interesting, according to the creators, the show doesn't have a definitive answer. It's intentional open to interpretation, and I personally think that's really cool. If that lore book had been opened and everything made clear, it might have taken the magic of the unknown out of the show, at least for the time being. Let's hope another season is coming soon:)

I very rarely comment on videos and am one of the more casual fans who digested the series through dissection videos like MatPats, which can still be fun. But after watching the series, I felt a similar way as you, that it’s more focused, the arts improved, the dedication is apparent. It can be enjoyed by its merits alone, not the theories it’ll spring. Your video articulated that in a way I haven’t been able to yet. I enjoyed your analysis greatly and have both liked and subscribed. I’m eager to see how you’ll go further in this series and other videos you’ll make. Keep up the great work!!!

I can't say that I agree with the part about analyzing and the series trying to tell the message of "just enjoying it", as the creators themselves said that they like all the theories and don't want to answer questions clearly so people can still theorize about the series. And ironically what you are doing is exactly that, theorizing about the meaning of the series, like the creators know that people do and encourage it.

There is sort of a silver lining to the ending. The books pages are written in scribbles like how he wrote earlier on in the episode. Maybe once I watch the whole thing, I'll fall down my own rabbit hole, but it seems like every interpretation is fairly equally valid. I think of all the theories I've seen, yours makes the most sense...there is no cohesive master theory guiding DHMIS except for the creators' understanding of how images affect viewers. It's just art, and it's uncannily glorious!

Honestly at this point I think there’s no wrong answer really to theories or speculations about this series including the web series. I’ve seen fans get pressed at other fans for their “wrong” theories and how they perceive it and I honestly think that the creators like us to see it in our own way instead of trying to figure out what’s actually happening beneath the surface that hasn’t even been revealed overall. Analysis videos are great though and I love them and it was genuinely the only thing I watched for a while when Dhmis was blowing up on the internet on its web series. I definitely think that the characters have developed more personality and I wouldn’t mind at all if it turned into something more of like a adult swim. I always thought during when the web series came out that Dhmis was just some extremely surreal humor and a representation of life. It’s more like that too in the TV show but the creepiness and gory parts are definitely toned down and it focuses more on the topic of replacement imo

One thing that this show does differently while still keeping the formula similar to the webseries is that the power dynamic is swapped. In the webseries the main trio were at the mercy of the 'teacher' for the respective video and they'd usually die at the end, in the show the trio regularly talk back to the teachers and its often times the teachers who die. The best example is in 'Friendship' where they're always insulting Warren in one way or another, and Warren never really has power over them (aside from Yellow Guy once he gets in Yellow's brain) and he's killed off and thrown away. That never would have happened in the webseries, and it being in the show is refreshing and a little cathardic at times. Also this is just my little theory but I don't think the book Lesley gave Yellow Guy had any answers in it. When Lesley is interacting with Yellow she kind of tries to get him to realize that there's no reason for why she's pulling the strings in the show aside from it being fun to her. She even tells him "You don't get why its funny", so why would Lesley give Yellow a book of answers when she's made it sort of clear there's no real deeper meaning behind anything? Its kind of like how a mother will get her child to do something in exchange for something they want; if Yellow helped Lesley clean up the dollhouse and left when he was done, she'd give him a convient big book of answers. She canonically resets everything at the end of each episode so there's be no consequences to Yellow finding out there are no answers when she can just hit the reset button. You could say its a metaphor for the show's creators giving us little bits and bobs of lore that secretly don't have much deeper meaning to keep those who like to dig deeper happy. There's nothing wrong with that either, as the show is good no matter how you approach it in the end and the creators make the show in such a way that there's stuff for both sides to enjoy.

honestly its so refreshing to see someone put into words the idea in my mind of like basically... it's not that deep. it CAN be, and i do think the original series developed an actual message (basically what inside a mind's explanation is, since i feel like it is more than interpretation and is actually based in real life evidence from creators), but even that started out as intending to be not much more than parody. the new series' mysteries are definitively much more in-universe and small-scale than the grand, symbolic theories imo. the storyline and messages of the og can't even really be considered connected, i dont think, and especially being an actual airing tv show i really think the show is and will stay contained in its own reality for the most part. that reality is a comedy-parody (of course with some amounts of depth, but nowhere near as much as the fanbase is used to)

There are lots of interpretive lens this show can be viewed through. Few of them are necessary. The 5th episode ending literally without a solution to the problem (and only a really funny joke) fits well with the perspective you offered of this show literally saying “don’t overthink it. Be there for the ride. No one wants to hear a worm (eagle) talk about economy and making people wanna run away”. Though it’s abit conflicted with the general theme of “bad stuff happens when you blindly follow what an authoritative figure tells you to go through without thinking about/questioning it” which can also be found in most of the series. All that considered I think you’re right. All the messaging is there, all the lore is there, and all the silly adult swim style tropes subversions are there too. Focusing on one aspect as being more important than the other isn’t necessary for experiencing this art for what it can be

I feel like the TV series doesn't exactly try to shutdown the analysis of the YT series but more so is just giving us a new take on the series that is more suited for TV audiences. I feel like there's been a bit of discourse over the theories on the YT series that's left all sides of the discussion feeling unwelcome which sucks considering the creators said the series was whatever you saw it as since it's art. In that regard, I'm really happy with this surrealist comedy route they've taken with the TV series, it feels sort of like a soft reboot to the series and I think it's a blast but also really great for welcoming new fans that might end up getting into the series from channel surfing and stuff I'm happy that it's given the fandom a revival most though, I've loved seeing DHMIS be prominent online again :)

f there was a second season could "Duck" be the one to break the boundaries of the show? In the web show it was Red, in the series it was Yellow. It would be interesting to see how he (basically being the oldest of the 3 characters) makes that separation between their "reality" and the "fiction" in a more meaningful way to the plot.
