‘Don’t go to the theatre’: Judi Dench weighs in on theatre trigger warnings
British actress Judi Dench weighed in on trigger warnings at the theatre during an interview with Radio Times Magazine.
Dench’s comments came after Harry Potter star Ralph Fiennes and Doctor Who star Matt Smith gave their opinions on the topic.
The trigger warning topic pertains to theatres informing viewers of potentially distressing material before the show begins.
Dench said that, under certain circumstances, a warning is necessary but can still affect a spectator’s experience.
“I can see why they exist, and it is preparing people, I suppose, but if you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theatre, because you could be very shocked. Where is the surprise of seeing and understanding it in your own way,” she said.

I'm offended by the trigger warnings.
Trigger warnings are for weak minded people who cant handle reality of life or the unrealistic reality of a show or movie.

"Unrealistic reality"? Are you on crack?
Sad that people today aren't able to enjoy life because they can't handle the every day stressors...trigger warnings are utterly ridiculous ABSOLUTELY
Trigger warning about strobe or flashing lights as it can induce seizures in some people. An actual physical health issue. Not trigger warnings to protect people's feelings, though. That's simply pathetic.

Very true, great point indeed. God bless
I'd be mad if a warning was issued. Surprise me 🎉
Trigger Warnings may have the potential to be a longer pre - show read than the length of the show itself !
I wish I was privileged enough to have these concerns.
Three times I tried to comment. Three times it vanished.
Thanks for being the adult in the room, Dame Judi.
"There may or not be something in this play that may or not trigger someone for some reason" - should be broad enough.
Trigger warning about a trigger warning?
Theatre critics often give a step by step synopsis of plays in their reviews, so if you've read the review NOTHING on stage is a surprise.
Love her!
Trigger warnings have nothing to do with sparing audience's feelings. They are designed to normalize a specific world view. The triggers are usually related to ideas which diverge from the progressive orthodoxy, and so by characterizing them as "triggers" they are assigned to the paradigm of "other". Something that is perfectly standard or commonplace among ordinary people may be deigned to be triggering if it does not align with woke beliefs.
Several key points. 1. Yes, trigger warnings are pointless. 2. No, an audience should not be "shocked or disturbed." We are here to be entertained. That being said, those offended by something simply entertaining are weak. But if a movie or play is deliberately trying to offend, the actors/writers are weak. 3. A play/movie cannot physically hurt you. 4. Most shows today are pur trash, so yeah. Just stay home.
This news article should of had a trigger warning for the RWNJ snowflakes.
PUSH BACK ON TRIGGER WARNINGS! These things are dumb as hell!
We seem to always forget about the people who may be triggered by the phrase "trigger warnings". What about the people who are so afraid of shootings that even the word "trigger" triggers them. Surely, we can come up with another word to use. Sorry if I triggered anyone... crap! Did it again
"For modern audiences" 👎👎👎
I absolutely cannot stand this trigger warning crap - a world full of snow flakes 🤦♀️
Actors are weirdos. Professional liars.
