""I love movies." - Joel Haver" - Scott Cramer. Going to the theater is one of my favorite things to do. As the wise Nicole Kidman once said, heartbreak feels good in a place like this. Let's talk about it.

The only thing more magical that seeing a movie at the theater, is seeing a movie at the theater alone, with nobody else in the theater. I’ve had it happened to me twice where I went to see a movie, and I was the only one who bought a ticket, and they still showed the movie. I felt like I was a millionaire who rented out the whole theater, but it was just a Monday evening.

I remember, my mom was really stuck up about that for a while because "it's wrong", but she ended up breaking one time when she physically couldn't afford to buy any snacks. We hopped over to Dollar General and as me and my brother were looking around for candy and discussing how we could hide it, she was visibly stressed the entire time. It was like seeing someone smoking weed for the first time while their parents were asleep in the next room. Of course, nothing bad happened, we enjoyed the movie with our snuck in snacks like nothing had happened.

My favorite theatre brand ad were the cell phone PSA’s that AMC ran in the 2000’s. It was essentially a fake movie trailer that would be interrupted halfway through by the classic Nokia ringtone ringing in a single speaker in the theatre, then the trailer would break the 4th wall and address the interruption. It got me every time! Especially when they made a new one.

I wish AMC never changed their intro from the guy being surprised and spilling popcorn to the guy being surprised and NOT spilling his popcorn. Anyways, to the point of the magic of movie theaters - I swear that there's some magic seeing a movie on the big screen. When AMC was showing all the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, it legitimately made me emotional watching them again, even though I've seen them so many times. Do I know the plot by heart? Yes. Did it still cause me to cheer and cry and experience all sorts of other emotions? Absolutely yes. I know for a fact I don't have the same experience watching it at home.

My theatre would do Trivia and give out prizes. AMC used to do the Best Picture Showcase where for 2 Saturdays they'd show all the Best Picture Nominees before The Oscars. Even the Star Wars Marathon back in 2015 where they showed I-VII was a blast. They started at 1am, brought free Donuts in the morning, and a concession voucher on top of the trivia. 24 glorious hours. It was a beautiful fan space to get hyped, nap if you need, stretch your legs between each showing. I miss it so much. Since lockdown they're so rare and in select locations. We need them back!

Even for the big box office ones I find myself wavering to go out with friends because I just know I'll end up behind someone with their phone brightness on max who won't stop texting for two hours straight

I was born 1980 in the UK & getting to the cinema in time to watch the adverts in the 80's & 90's was essential for most people, much like the American admiration & efforts of Super Bowl ads. They were always funny & exaggerated, & the ad roll would always start & end with a Butterkist ad, with increasingly louder chanting of "Butterkist, Butterkist, Ra-ra-ra!", while there was just a bag of the popcorn being shaken on the big-screen, y'know, to make you want to buy popcorn if you were daft enough to have forgotten to get some already. My first film watched at the cinema was Who Framed Roger Rabbit... good times.

I live in a town of about 1,600 in rural Nebraska. We only have a 1-screen volunteer-run movie theater that only shows one movie per weekend at 7:30pm on Saturday and Sunday nights. Nothing fancy or special. But I love going there. It's only $4 for adults to enter, I buy a giant popcorn bucket every January for $20 and get $2 refills on it all year long. I can afford to take all my kids there and get snacks and everything. I could never do that in a large AMC/Regal theatre. Support you small, local theaters ❤

But I want to add another perspective: Been out of college 5 years now (obviously not in a GOOD financial spot, but i’m “ok” lol) The convenience of streaming new movies from home keeps me from going to the theater even more than the crazy ticket prices. The joy of watching something with a group of people who you’ll never see again, but you all for a moment get to share something whether that’s laughing or crying, not to sound like the Kidman ad but I do think that’s a magic we should hold on to. Great video, as always!

I think COVID has a lot to do with that sentiment towards movie theaters, today. We were taught to view others a potential risk to our health and people adapted to the idea. Now, people view “other people” as inconvenient to their life at a minimum and a nuisance at worst. That idea pushes people away from each other.

Hey Scott! I started learning ASL (American Sign Language) last year, and it's been incredibly impactful. A member of the Deaf community I have gotten to know is my ASL teacher, who is a movie lover - but something I have learned is how inaccessible movie theatres are for people who are Deaf/ deaf, Hard of Hearing, Neurodivergent, etc. Closed Captioning devices at theatres are incredibly dated or not offered, so members of the aforementioned communities who rely on subtitles can't go to movie theatres; they're forced to wait for it to show up on a streaming service - and then they have to hope the people who make the captions do a good job. Something that could help a whole new community access movies at the theatre: OPEN CAPTIONS! That just means captions on the screen at the bottom of the screen - where everyone can see them. Maybe you can help advocate for a change.

I have this interesting perspective of marcus theatres. I live in the UK but my wife is from Wisconsin so over the past decade I've been to the local marcus theater about a half dozen times and I LOVE IT. The best thing about it is that for me it makes me nostalgic, it feels like a real cinema. Over here in the UK a lot of cinemas now are within malls or retail park areas, they're cold, lifeless and have no soul. Marcus theaters are the complete opposite. They just give you a cinema feeling. And don't get me started on the chairs. My life hasn't been the same since. Anytime i go to the cinema in the Uk it feels like a total waste 😂 i just end up sitting there like a squashed sardine wishing i was 3000+ miles away. Plus the price, $5 Tuesday??? Unmatched.

as far as I know, my local theatre isn't part of a chain (I'm pretty my town is the only location) so they're able to keep their prices fairly low (a matinee ticket is only $6.50 and a general ticket is $8.50 which is pretty cheap compared to most other places and the most expensive refreshment is the kid's pack which is only $5 and comes with popcorn, a drink, and candy) I've been going there every since I was a kid, and there's just something really fascinating about how I can be in a dark room for two hours and come out with my life completely changed. I always have so much to say and so much I'm feeling after watching a movie, even if it wasn't a particularly good movie. I think it's because I'm a lot more present at the theatre because I can't be on my phone. If I was watching a movie at home, I'd just be scrolling through social media or texting my friends the whole time. I'm literally writing this comment while this video plays on my TV. There's also a sense of familiarity when I go to the theater because most of the people who work there are people I grew up with and the ads that play before the movies are from places in my town - places I've been to and that are owned by people I know. Long story short, I agree with Scott wholeheartedly. There's something incredibly beautiful about being in a room with a bunch of people and experiencing the same thing but in different ways.

It might be cool if there were some kind of system where, say one showing is for silent audience experience and the next is for "loud" audience experience. well maybe not loud, there will still need to be some etiquette, just more relaxed. that way you can pick what kind of experience you want.

Even if I’m seeing the horrible horror movie of the month for the third time. If I can’t stand spending time with myself, why would anyone else want to (not my mindset anymore as I gained self confidence but that was the mindset when it started)? Scott thank you for talking about Marcus theaters, I’m from Wisconsin and have only ever been to one theater that wasn’t a Marcus. I love going to the movies and I always laugh seeing Greg pop up on the screen before every movie. Underrated theater but the best around!

I saw all 9 Star Wars episodes in a row at a theater on May 4th. Amazing experience. Don't kill the theaters!

I also met Greg and had the most awkward conversation with him 😂 I wasn't worthy of his presence

I just can't go to theaters any more it's way too loud for me. I used to love going, love the atmosphere and sharing the experience with others especially on premier nights. But it's gotten louder and louder each year and now it's not worth the pain and ringing for hours after.

Bring headphones :) I am sensitive to loud sounds so I often wear over the head headphones. You can still hear everything but it's quieter.

A lot of theaters now actually have private theaters for people who are also sensitive to you know other stimuli, hearing, a bunch of different features.

Here's the thing, Scott. 40$ to go see Godzilla X Kong, 30$ for a drink for me, popcorn and M&M's for her. It's too expensive. I love the movies. It's a special experience. But it's too expensive now. I can't spend that much money on a singular experience when regularly, interesting films are coming out more and more.

Like 20 for a Marcus theater on a weekend night. Simply not fair to anyone outside of the Midwest.

You’re not required to buy concessions (bring them with you if you must have them), and most theatres have some kind of rewards program now. AMC A-List, for instance, lets you see three movies a week for $20 a month.

This is why im shocked the theater i work at has such little business. We have $10 tickets and $15 gets you a large popcorn and 2 large drinks. Its such a steal and yet still nobody wants to see movies

I don't think people understood what I meant so I'll itemize everything: Theater tickets are 20$ each Drink is 9.99$ M&Ms are 7.99$ Popcorn is 10$ We are in Canada, everything is expensive up here, but movies especially. 40$ for just the tickets so both my wife and I can go.

They're are very few movies these days that are worth theater prices. Unless it's a big epic tentpole that is designed for a big screen, you can just watch it on demand three weeks later.

Pretty much how I have felt for a while now. I used to make a point of seeing marvel movies in theaters. But even they aren't worth it anymore.

While I understand this point of view, the issue with it is that it encourages movie studios to not give chances to new filmmakers who want to make original movies because people won’t pay to see them. Thus encouraging studios to only green light more big IP movies and other sequels that nobody needs. Original films deserve to have their time to shine on the big screen more than most others imo. It’s also worth noting that certain theater chains have membership programs that make regularly seeing movies more affordable. For example, AMC has the A-List program which is around $25 a month to see up to three movies a week. And that includes formats like imax! With that deal you’re saving money even if you only see two movies a month! And I saw there’s a much smaller theater chain called Celebration Cinema that has a nearly identical program. It’s awesome!

Recently I went to the movies with a friend, we were probably like 12 people total on the room but we were all equally into the movie, it was great. I love going to the theater for stuff like that.
