Don't Get this Wrong on your TIG Torch

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

For the better part of 4 days I was trying to diagnose why my electrode was throwing a violent arc, discoloring and the weld puddle was extremely hot for the amperage creating a very porous puddle with brown discoloring around the bead. This all the while my Argon bottle still showed pressure, I could hear gas coming out of my torch when I pushed my foot pedal and in post flow on my Everlast PowerUltra 206Pi. All things pointed to a gas issue, and the solution wound up being very simple.

Well, that’s a lesson you won’t forget. I had the same frustration a few years ago that ended up being a contaminated bottle of argon. Took me days, to figure out what was wrong.👍

I can definitely feel ya! I had a good day running the machine yesterday. Switched back to the old bottle first. And I'm pretty close to running it out now, so the new bottle of argon was still an effort worth doing!

Done this a time or two, but never welded with it before noticing the problem. A lot of the times, my tungsten never was fully tightened when turning the “back cap” to tighten everything. I always pull on my tungsten after I set up to make sure everything is tight. If it’s wrong, your notice your back cap not going down as far as it used to or when you pull on the tungsten, it will move.

I've just had a similar experience, my arc kept flaring and I couldn't even start a weld. Fortunately it didn't take too long to figure out after watching this video and others. I checked everything and couldn't find anything wrong but then stumbled across the problem - the sensitivity setting on my auto helmet was set wrong and I was trying to weld with it flashing off and on! I'm not sure if I'll have to deal with arc-eye tonight, but it sure was affecting my vision and I'm surprised I didn't wake up to it a bit earlier. Luckily, only around and hour lost, not several days as in your case.

I'm confused by your Argon pressure regulator. It does not look like a flow meter but a pressure regulator. Just how are you controlling CFH of the argon? Adjusting pressure seems to be a guessing game. From watching another video, the CFH is the number of the ceramic cup X2 for minimum CFH, e.g. #5 cup X2 is 10CFH minimum, and max is *2.5. So a flow regulator, you will see a ball floating in the tube, and the markings on the outside of the tube tell you what the CFH is. You would be able to see this flow when you set it up before welding. In your case, it would tell you that you were not delivering the required argon flow rate to the weld cup.

Dang. I just realized I had mine in backwards. Even though I was thinking it was backwards at the time . but I couldn't get it to tighten down sufficiently on the tungsten the other way so when I flipped it and it gripped it great without me having to twist it so hard that it twisted the collet grooves I figured it must be right. Kind of weird though because it didn't really affect the welding that bad but I was welding aluminum. but I did have to turn up the flow just slightly so I reckon that was probably it.
