In your plant collecting journey, have you ever been scammed? Plant enthusiasts have been a prime target for scammers since the plant craze started. It's easy to fall for the promise of trending plants or rare plants at affordable prices, only to be caught out.
I cover some popular plant scam tactics to look out for, along with a number of checks you can make to minimise your chances of being scammed. I also felt this was particularly relevant, as the buyer protections I cover are relevant for all online purchases. With the festive season coming up, a lot of us will be shopping for the holidays, so these can be applied in the same way to help us shop safely online.
Rather than established plant retailers, I focus on reseller sites (e.g. Etsy, ebay, etc.) and buying plants from individuals on social media.
Of course, there is always a risk when buying plants from individuals this way and there will always be scammers, but there are also many genuine plant sellers that have great plants up for grabs. I also share a couple of recent plant hauls from individuals, with some incredibly special plants!
Despite being quite cautious, I have recently been caught out in a plant scam but thanks to buyer protections, I was able to get the money back. However, some people may not be so lucky.
You may already follow many of these checks or just not buy plants online altogether, but I hope this video will help whoever watches it to avoid falling victim to a plant scam.
