On e-bay, there are some foreign people pretending to be Japanese sellers to sell fake bags. You can tell by their awkward Japanese language, it’s obvious they are not native Japanese. There is an official trade association in Japan called AACD (Association Against Counterfeit Product Distribution) that strictly guarantees authenticity, and only proper sellers can belong there. I only buy from sellers who belong to that association, because they have the professional expertise to sell only authentic bags.

@@JessiestyleI really don’t think it’s hit and miss. I think people have gotten paranoid because a few of the THOUSANDS of second-hand bags sold are fake. Now the luxury handbag community is up in arms about things being fake when there is really have no solid proof that the the second-hand market is being inundated by fakes. A few videos have sent folks into a tizzy, just like the “quiet luxury” thing did.

i think there is a difference between shopping online with a "japanese" seller, versus shopping in person in japan at the reputable preloved stores with AACD accreditation. i think it is important that this is differentiated as anyone can pose as a "japanese" seller online.

Thanks for the video. I grew up in Japan and am fluent in Japanese. It is LEGAL to purchase fakes for personal use. Let's say you get a fake on a trip abroad and bring it back to Japan. At Japanese customs, if you get asked about that item, you can say you bought it for personal use. You can enter Japan without any problems. However, receiving a fake by an overseas business by international mail is illegal, for example, purchasing a fake online and having it sent, even when there's an intermediary to receive the item on your behalf. Anyway, as long as people bring in fakes to Japan, they can be mixed in the market. Resellers have the burden to check authenticity, but it's not realistic to assume 100% accuracy all the time.

I've bought a lot of preloved items from Japan, but never ran into something like this. Usually, they sell pre-loved AS IS. This just doesn't look legit from the get-go. I wonder how hard she had to work to find the ONE bad Japanese seller. They're honestly, some of the most wonderful international resellers I've had the pleasure to buy from. Honestly, you have to work pretty hard to find a fake like that from Japan... or have unreasonably high expectations of "pre-loved" items. I've NEVER seen an item that looks that good, selling for that price point from a legit Japanese seller. I had to laugh at how hard someone had to look to find that example... C'mon. Don't make generalizations about the Japan pre-loved market because you fell for THAT. Many of the real Japanese resellers that I've bought from have a rule that they sell AS IS, if you don't think it's worth saving, cleaning the handles and conditioning the leather, bringing out the beauty of the bag again... then simply don't buy it. But they're prices are very helpful for a budget buyer like myself. They truly consider the amount of work you will have to put into the bag and they price it accordingly. Japanese are the most fair of any international seller that I've ever worked with. Also, just some constructive feedback. If you want to know about why Japanese takes such good care of their items, then ask them. There is literally a channel on YT called 'Ask Japanese' and many similar ones. I get that content creators have deadlines but there could have been a little more work put into this video.

If it seems to good to be true then it is probably fake. I bought a classic flap for a great price. When I got it I could tell the clasp had been replaced. I messaged them and they discounted the bag further. In the handbag world it seems taboo to alter Chanel in any way. Where as with Louis Vuitton it’s done all the time. I say if you want a pristine collectors piece you should be very careful and all alterations should be disclosed but if you want to save a bag from the landfill then I have no problem with it. I don’t think it makes it fake.

You forgot to mention that Japan places 3rd in the most number of millionaires (in USD) in the world. So it shouldn't be such a surprise if they purchase and ditch/sell used luxury goods like it's a piece of clothing. I reckon that is (their buying power) also why the country gets exclusive and rare merchandise from luxe brands in comparison to other countries (and less due to 'particularity' in items bought).

If only this video came out a few months ago. I purchased a pre-loved LV papillon from Japan (online). Initially when it came, I wasn't really happy about it since it was not mentioned anywhere that the piece has been worked on. It didn't help that the workmanship was below par. N then 4 months later, I noticed that the interior of the bag is peeling. So now I am thinking it is fake. I wrote back to the third party buyer (a website that helps u bid and buy products from Japan only website) and they mentioned they're not able to authenticate the bag and that they are not liable since I chose the bag in the first place. So now I am stuck with a (maybe) fake re-engineered bag 😢 I think I'll probably buy the next bag onsite!

How about the Blue Birkin that Bedo's Leatherworks restored, is that no longer authentic? Wouldn't it be more authentic if he had used a real Birkin or other Hermes bags lining? What's the point of restoring your things at all if you believe they have no value after being used? That just seems very ...privileged? elitist? There's no point in buying designer goods if they're just going to be thrown out in a landfill for fear of being "not authentic enough".

A seller needs to DISCLOSE that a bag has been repaired or altered, & it’s great to know who did the work. Altered bags generally don’t fetch as much on the preloved market - so it’s the dishonest sellers that we’re discussing here, cheating the buyer & saying a bag is in pristine original condition. Nothing against restored bags in general! (In some cases I’d pay more for a restored bag - but I want to know what I’m buying.)
