Next month I will travel to Egypt with my mother, only for a week 🥲 (on an organized tour), and your videos are really useful (for example, I take note of the oil shop in Khan El-Khalili). Thank you for your amazing work! Greetings from Spain 😘

    Oh amazing! Egypt is so awesome! You're going to have your mind blown😂😎 I'm so happy some of my videos are useful, that is definitely my intention! And yes be careful in Khan El-Khalili, basically everyone will try to rip you off (in this video I was surprisingly offered fair and good prices almost right away, but usually they will charge twice what you should be paying, maybe even more than double). I hate to say this but tour companies also, I mean they might take you to Khan El-Khalili but to their vendor, almost everyone/all tour companies makes a commission from tourists when they buy rugs/oils/papyrus and stuff. I don't blame them, they are trying to make a living, but just barter a lot or try a different shop, they may go lower. So be aware of that, even though your tour guide or company might say they are going to "shelter" or "protect you" from people trying to overcharge you, they might just be bringing you to their friend's shop or someone they have a deal with. But the markets are crazy and it's a lot of fun, just treat it like a game! Ignore, barter, go way lower than you want to pay and see what they say. If someone tells me 200 for something and i want to pay 100 for it, for example, I might say "200?!" no way. I would pay like....70. Sometimes they will just say no and turn away, sometimes not. It's fun 😂 Thanks so much for watching! And if you have time and want to meet, just let me know! (I know you will be very busy with a tight schedule, so probably not, but if you have time). 😁 Best of luck!

    Great video; how did you use your phone in Egypt. what plan makes you connected.?

  • @Gventures

    @Gventures

    Жыл бұрын

    Local SIM card. Any time I travel abroad I always make sure my phone is unlocked and then just buy and use a local SIM card and data plan when I arrive. Using international data plans from your home carrier is a huge rip off and half the time doesn't work well. It is much wiser and much cheaper (any in many countries like Egypt, India, Thailand, Vietnam, etc) to just buy a local SIM card and data plan once you arrive. If you don't know much about it, there are tons of videos on KZread about it. I got my SIM card at the airport once I landed in Cairo. The guy at the VodaPhone kiosk near the luggage claim in Cairo airport asks what plan you want (data, or data + local calling minutes), you choose your package and then he puts the SIM card in for you. Your phone number from your home country of course is not working because the SIM card they put into your phone is a different number, but everything else (apps, photos, etc.) is still on there. Then you are connecting to the local towers and internet is much faster and MUCH cheaper. I made a video about the 3 biggest carriers in Egypt and show the cost of some of their data plans, if you're curious: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGaOu82MppnUhM4.html

  • @Gventures

    @Gventures

    2 жыл бұрын

    Oh damn, that's a shame. Yeah that's a pretty common scam, people always referring tourists to their friend's shop, the shop owner always ripping tourists off charging ridiculously high prices, and then the guide or whoever brought them there gets a commission from the sale. Sorry to hear that happened to you. I've never had a guide here and have always gone alone, also I barter pretty hard here depending on what price they start with. I actually was given fairly decent prices right from the start for most things in these 2 videos. I recently bought several dresses for my sister in the market as well, and paid 170 EGP for one and 160 EGP for the other (just to give you an idea of what they can be sold for). Of course it depends on the style and material (they are always trying to charge more claiming cashmere or silk or some crap, sometimes it's true it's good quality material, but many times it's not and no reason to be charging so much). Egyptian women need to be able to afford these things too, so it can't be insanely high prices for them. Thanks so much for watching, and i hope you can make it back here! Khan El-Khalili can be a fun experience if you don't have someone herding you around to their friend's shops, regardless of being pestered by the many vendors 😅

I even sent some home and my family has never had issues with the oil either. Which I think I would have heard about, as my mom does massage and is used to good quality oils, so she would have complained about it if it wasn't good. You sure it's the right vendor you are thinking of? I would be impressed if you did, as it's a massive market and so many of the shops look similar

    OK, I totally get the bothering system now that I continue to watch the video 22:40 I guess because I’m American I look at the scarves and some of the handcrafted sculptures as treasures of their cultures so I think we should pay more than $5 but those are nice items for a steal

  • @Gventures

    @Gventures

    3 күн бұрын

    Yeah, a lot of people do what you did, relating it to the price of that item to prices in their own country, but you really should resist comparing prices from one country to another, because of course the currency, wages, economy; everything is different from one country to another. I do feel that if someone is willing to pay more for an item (or wants to leave a generous tip), sure, go ahead and make that person's day. But when overpaying, it gives the idea to that merchant or vendor that they can charge people more than what they should be charging for that item. That's when scams enter the mind and system. A price should be set according to that country's value of currency. And although maybe an item seems cheap to someone coming from the US or Europe, it is not for a local, or a visitor from Thailand, or India, as an example. So, one must keep that in mind when traveling. I plan to make another video about bartering again soon, because I want to try to make a better video than this one, hopefully slightly more informative 😅 Thanks for watching Scorpion! 🙏

  • @Gventures

    @Gventures

    I asked my Egyptian friends if what I paid was good, and they told me they didn't think it was bad at all. But I should mention, most Egyptians also have no idea what this stuff should cost, they don't go shopping for papyrus and statues 🤣 That being said, also don't expect to get THE EXACT SAME price as an Egyptian, that is very difficult to navigate your way to that price all the time, but what I paid is very low and reasonable. I could bring a friend, but I'm not going to bother them and make them wander around the market with me as I shop for souvenirs for my family. Also, I wanted to show what tourists experience will be like. Most tourists are not going to be walking around with a local, so my experience and behavior in this video shows how they should barter and what their experience will be like. But thanks for the suggestions and watching 😊

I just recently bought some clothes (definitely used) a few weeks ago at a street market I stumbled upon while walking home. There are street markets everywhere and at certain times of the week there are specific markets that pop up. I really love your travel vlogs helps me alot but ummm I have a disagreement with you, to be very honest those Egyptian Scarves seems VERY GOOD QUALITY and I jus googled Egyptian Pounds into USD United States dollars and what the fuck??? 🤨🤨🤨 Girl 200 Egyptian Pounds is $6.48 for that scarve that you liked for your sis, that is NOT a bad price, its quite a reasonable and cheap price. Here in the United States, to buy a similar scarve and more over good quality is FUCKING EXPENSIVE 🫰🫰🫰🫰 we are talking about like from $15.00 and up and so I don't know what your deal is, but the UNITED STATES IS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRIES 🫰🫰🫰🫰 The good Thing is that he gave you a 10% extra discount for your satisfaction which is NOT bad thats ALOT to save money and get a good quality scarve for a good reasonable price and its NOT a famous or popular brand name. I LOVE SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESSES because they will have handmade, good quality and AUTHENTIC products.

    Ummm okay girl you can disagree all you want, but you need to understand this ISN'T AMERICA. I live here and work here and I don't MAKE what I would make in America. I can't stand when people compare their country/culture/currency to another country's anyway. This is the way things work in Egypt, this is what everyone does, and the price he sold me for the scarf is still higher than what a local would pay for it. You should learn how to barter or you're going to get ripped off and pay more than what you should be paying for items in different countries. Or if you can afford to pay more and justify the exorbitant price (because that's what that price is in Egypt-exorbitant) by thinking about how much it would cost in the US, go ahead and pay them as much as you would like, they will certainly have no argument about that 😆I'm sorry, but you obviously haven't traveled in many developing countries which require you to barter, or you would know this is how the way things work. They start off by asking for a high price because they know you will argue and bring it down. I start by going extremely low because I know they will bring it up. Then we meet in the middle for a fair price. If it wasn't fair they would not be selling it to me for that price, of course they are still making a profit or they wouldn't sell it to me. You just googled the exchange rate now, it isn't what I paid for this scarf, because the EGP has been continually losing value and I did not make this video yesterday. Exchange rates were different when I made this video. Also Khan el Khalili Market is full of fake stuff and mass produced items, those scarves can be found at every other shop in the market. Support small businesses all you want and feel exalted by it, but don't climb on a soapbox and preach to me girl.
