The tightened up rope trick for the skyhook is very imaginative :D Still though, I wonder: Where's the threshold, in the likelihood that your protection pops during the fall, at which one decides to still place a gear, rather than just admitting to themselves that they're free soloing the "protected" section of the wall? :D Anyway, this was awesome to watch :)

They have Spain right there 😂 Local ethic and tradition has value, it fosters pride and shared community around the quirks of your hometown spot. And that can include an outdoor gym like rifle, I live rifle and the people there are proud of the history of rifle too. It doesn’t just apply to places with no bolts.

Using extra rope with belayer to weight the sky hook, a lot of routes could be opened up using that technique. Never seen that before, but then I haven’t climbed in 20years.

Indeed you seemed pretty close to the floor for a fall 😅 and if you were to take the fall before placing your skyhook you would have to trust this first secured point 😅 windy and sweaty climb ouch 😓 never used skyhook though ..

Can someone explain the purpose of the black rope. Is it to keep the skyhook from falling out? How does fixing gear with a 3rd party sit within the ethics of trad? Would something sticky that washes away achieve the same thing - perhaps golden syrup? I rewatched the full video but missed anything being said about it

Likely a way to keep the skyhook in place, there's an infamous climb at Fairhead called the complete scream that has a sling duct taped onto a tiny nubbin to keep it in place. Ethics wise, it doesn't leave a noticeable mark on the rock, no hammer is used and it's easily removable. IMO a creative yet bold option for protection on hella hard climbs

He might literally be the best trad climber in the world. I will admit to wording my questions in a controversial way to attract attention in the hope of being noticed. It’s on Binnian North Tor in the Mourne Mountains in Ireland. Rock is granite. First ascent by John Dunne (I believe without the skyhook)
